Rhys looked up, putting his phone away, and met her gaze. "As long as you keep your mouth shut, no one will ever know."
Vivienne smirked. "Let's hope so. Just pray nobody else digs it up."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
Vivienne leaned back on the sofa and casually peeled a tangerine.
"Someone's been looking into you lately. They're dangerously close to tracing it back to me."
"Who?"
"How should I know? I'm not a private investigator." She tossed a slice of tangerine into her mouth and laughed.
"It's only a matter of time before she finds out anyway. You better start thinking about your excuses now."
"Oh, right." She nearly forgot the main reason she came.
"Holden is back from Thailand. He's coming to Aurelia City in a few days. If he finds out you've got such a precious weakness hidden here, he's going to have a field day."
Rhys had managed to claw his way up from the bottom of the Sinclair family hierarchy so quickly because he and Vivienne had teamed up to ruthlessly blindside Holden while he was away.
They had stolen Ryland Group right out from under him just as it was taking shape.
But the fact that Rhys had dared to make such a move proved he had the ambition and the skill to build the company into an empire.
And he had. Ryland Group had flourished in Aurelia City, growing far beyond his original expectations.
For years, the two brothers had remained politely cordial on the surface, avoiding open conflict, but the behind-the-scenes warfare never stopped.
Holden was Hector Sinclair's first adopted son, five years older than Rhys, and significantly more ruthless and cutthroat than Hector himself.
Now that Rhys had broken away from the family business, the bulk of the Sinclair empire—aside from what Hector directly controlled—was in Holden's hands.
As a fellow adopted son, Holden had forced all the others who initially defied him into submission. They all relied on his protection now.
Or rather, his oppression. No one dared step out of line.
Holden knew his father's personality well enough to see that Rhys wasn't the outcast everyone claimed he was.
He had realized a long time ago: the more Hector pretended not to care about Rhys, the more he actually did.
That was when Holden understood that no matter how hard the adopted sons fought, they could never compete with the biological heir.
