She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 88

Caden kept his jaw clenched tightly, refusing to say a word. He started the engine and hit the gas.

Seeing the state he was in, Shera finally remembered she needed to explain. "You're misunderstanding. I was just covering that date as a favor. Dr. Pembroke thinks I'm Xenia."

"It's really simple. Xenia's grandpa is getting old and wants her to settle down, but she doesn't want to right now, and she couldn't say no. So, I stepped in to help."

"That's the entire story."

The scenery blurred past the windows. Despite Shera's explanations, the man in the driver's seat remained dead silent.

"Say something! I just explained it to you! What are you throwing a fit over?"

"Dragging me out of there without even asking what was going on—do you even know the meaning of respect?"

When he continued to ignore her, Shera lost her patience. She crossed her arms and said recklessly, "Don't forget, we already signed the divorce papers."

Caden's knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel. He slammed his foot on the brake, the tires screeching sharply against the pavement.

Shera was jerked violently against her seatbelt, her face draining of color. "What are you doing?"

"Signed the divorce papers?" Caden looked at her, his voice freezing cold. "Do I need to remind you that it was just a procedural step? Legally speaking, we are still husband and wife."

"Shera, have I been too lenient with you? Is that why you keep crossing my bottom line over and over again?"

Shera looked away and took a deep breath.

She admitted she hadn't thought things through this time. Morally speaking, since their relationship wasn't officially over, she shouldn't have done it.

"But I already explained everything to you! If you refuse to believe me, what do you expect me to do?"

"Having dinner with other men, and you think you're the one in the right?"

Her absurd logic made Caden's face turn livid with anger. "What about the bar last time? And what about Rhys Jewell?"

He snapped, "Shera, don't push your luck."

She snapped back, her voice rising to match his. "Push my luck? I literally just exchanged a few words with that guy at the bar. And as for Rhys Jewell, how was I supposed to know he was the one behind Riverbend Textiles?"

"Open the door. I'm getting out."

Caden's eyes stayed locked on her, totally unfazed.

Her phone was on silent, but she could see the screen lighting up. Xenia was calling her.

She held out her hand. "Give me my phone back."

The man beside her remained silent.

"Caden," Shera asked him, "what exactly do you want? Do you want me to apologize to you?"

She absolutely despised his silence. Could he just rip the band-aid off and get it over with?

Caden's brow twitched.

What did he want? He honestly didn't know.
