When he saw her outside the restaurant earlier, he was undeniably furious. It felt as though he was being provoked over and over again.
Lately, there were just too many men buzzing around her—one, two, three—so many that it disgusted him.
Smiling and laughing with others, yet glaring at him with nothing but cold hostility.
So he pushed the door open and marched right in. He hadn't thought about the consequences, or what kind of scene it would cause. It was almost a primal urge to assert dominance, to prove she belonged to him.
But... this wasn't like him.
He had never felt the need to prove anything to anyone. He didn't know how, and he certainly didn't care to try.
He tried to recall how he usually handled people who treated him poorly.
Revenge? Calculation? Making them pay the price?
It seemed to be a mix of all three.
Yet... he had no desire to use any of those methods on Shera.
He pressed his lips together, his eyes fixed on his own reflection in the window.
The face staring back at him had a deep scowl and downturned lips, but the eyes lacked the destructive fury he usually possessed when truly enraged.
Looking at that face, Caden felt like he was looking at a stranger.
"Caden." The voice beside him shattered the silence.
"Have you gone mute?"
When the man didn't move, she simply unbuckled her seatbelt and lunged forward, trying to snatch her phone from his pocket.
Caden turned his head just as she leaned in, and her soft lips accidentally brushed against his cheek.
It happened so fast he almost thought it was an illusion. So fast that Shera didn't even realize she'd done it.
He froze. The woman next to him pulled her phone from his pocket, sat back down, and opened her messages to reply.
Caden's mind went completely blank. The world around him seemed to fall silent; he couldn't even hear the sound of Shera returning the call.
His heartbeat felt entirely irregular.
Aiken couldn't help but wonder.
In the other car, Shera kept her head down, replying to work texts, while Xenia kept shooting her nervous glances.
"Are you sure you're okay? Did he try anything?"
Shera forwarded a spreadsheet to Zena, looked up, and chuckled. "I'm fine. We just yelled at each other a bit. This is the third time you've asked me."
Xenia pouted, her face full of guilt. "I'm so sorry, baby. I really didn't think I'd drag you into this huge mess."
Shera smiled and reassured her, "It's okay. This is nothing for me and him."
They were already at each other's throats; adding a little more fuel to the fire changed nothing.
"He didn't threaten you over the settlement, did he? Like, falsely accusing you of cheating?"
Shera thought about it for a second, then shook her head. "No. I thought he would, but he actually didn't bring it up at all."
"Hmm." Xenia nodded thoughtfully.
