Chapter 101 Love Is So Scary

Chapter 101 Love Is So Scary

November’s deep blue eyes narrowed for a split second, but his face stayed cool. He shot Weston a confused look. “Faking it? What are you talking about, guy? I seriously don’t get you.”

Weston stroked his beard. “You put on a good show, but I can see right through you. You’re not even close to rut!”

November lowered his gaze, fiddling with the optical computer on his wrist, wondering if he should just get rid of Weston once and for all.

But Weston looked up at Layla, who was hanging out with the kids, and suddenly said to November, “Thank you, Prince Atlas.”

November’s hand froze. “Why are you thanking me out of nowhere?”

Weston said, “You actually want to understand Layla, which means you’re willing to stick around for her. That’s something I’ m really grateful for. Layla has had it rough.

“If only I hadn’t been a step too late back then, she wouldn’t have ended up with the Sullivan family. It’s because of you that she finally broke free from all the Sullivan family drama.”

Weston thought, ‘I always thought the Sullivan family would give Layla a real home, but who would’ve thought that after Xanthe returned, they’d turn on Layla like that?’

November narrowed his eyes, just about to speak up, when he suddenly noticed Layla walking over to them.

Layla shot them a suspicious look. “What are you two talking about?”

She couldn’t help but think, ‘Whether it’s Weston and Atlas or Weston and November, what could they possibly have to talk about for so long?’

With Layla eyeing them suspiciously, November walked right up to her and said seriously, “I was asking Weston if you’d ever dated anyone before.”

“Exactly! I’ve told you a hundred times, Layla has never had another boyfriend, but you just refuse to believe it! If she had, you’d be out of luck!” Weston snorted.

November’s blue eyes narrowed again.

He couldn’t help but think, ‘He must have a death wish.’

Layla didn’t pick up on the tension between them, but right then, air raid sirens started wailing across the planet.

It was Christmas Eve, and the piercing noise was so harsh that the kids dropped from their beds.

“What’s going on?” Layla hurried to the door and looked outside. Huge ships were streaking across the sky, chasing after something, and explosions rocked the buildings next door.

Weston stayed cool as ever. “Let the heavyweights fight it out. Not our problem. Everyone, get to the air raid shelter, now!”

He was totally unfazed, hands behind his back, just staring up at the sky, and remarked as if he was judging some cosmic talent show.

Layla and Celia quickly rounded up the kids and hustled them down to the basement. Once the kids settled in, Layla glanced back, only to find November still outside!

She immediately ran out again, looking for November.

Right then, November and Weston were standing at the entrance of Wastelands-9 Orphan Core, looking up at the two sides duking it out overhead.

November narrowed his eyes. “It’s the rebels and the Alpha Prime army.”

Weston snorted. “Ultra-S Tier shifters really do have the best eyesight! But listen, this isn’t on the rebels. If you want to blame someone, blame those kids. They’re just asking for trouble.”

“Those kids?” November asked.

Weston replied, “Yeah, those rich brats from Alpha Prime’s high society, doing their so-called winter break trial. If I’m not mistaken, they’re all the prodigies your brother’s been training to go up against you one day!

“They unleashed vicious starbeasts in the civilian zone. People got hurt, and we can’t just ignore that.”

November’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “You kneel line that, soy

showed up early to warn everyone to hide?”

“I don’t get mixed up in battles, but I’m not about this folk at the page Layla cares about get hurt,” Weston said.

That’s why Weston popped up at the orphanage out of the blue. He just hadn’t counted on Layla and November being there

either.

November sized up Weston, who looked totally unfazed. Just then, Layla rushed over, and November’s whole attitude did a complete 180 in a split second. He ditched Weston and hurried straight to Layla. “Layla, don’t come out here! It’s dangerous!”

Watching how fast November switched gears, Weston just shook his head.

Weston thought, ‘Man, love is terrifying. It has got Atlas acting like he has got split personalities!

‘Actually, scratch that. Atlas has always been a total split personality case.

Layla grabbed both of them by the hand and spun around, heading straight for the air raid shelter. “You two, hurry up and

get to the shelter with me! Neither of you has a ship, so unless you want to get blown to bits, move!”

Layla didn’t give them a chance to protest, just hauled them both straight into the shelter. Only after she made sure everyone was in the shelter did she finally breathe easily.

The kids were scared out of their minds, but they stuck close to Celia, clinging to her for safety.

Pretty soon, the explosions hit their area too. The ground shook like crazy, and dust started falling from above.

One little kid, snuggled in Celia’s arms, blinked and asked, “Is the new factory next door, the Grant family just built, gonna get blown up?”

Celia froze for a few seconds, then shook her head. “I don’t know.”

She said she didn’t know, but with the blasts this close, odds are those new waste plants won’t make it out in one piece.

Mr. Grant and his crew must be losing their minds right now. All that upfront investment, probably down the drain.

Celia just prayed everyone would make it out safe.

November didn’t say a word, quietly staying by Layla’s side. Every so often, he’d glance down at his optical computer. Layla looked a bit worried. “Do you need to step out for a while?”

November paused for a moment, then shook his head. “No need. I’m on leave now. Roger and the others are taking care of things.”

“But aren’t Roger and the others still on Xyphora, handling the aftermath of the rebel occupation?” Layla asked.

Just then, Weston’s ears practically shot up. He looked genuinely baffled. “Who said the rebels took over Xyphora? Since when? Nobody told me anything!”

Layla just rolled her eyes. “Seriously, Weston, how would you even hear about stuff like that?”

“I…” Weston started.

Weston hadn’t told Layla he was working with the rebels since he was still in the dark about Layla’s birth parents.

He only knew they were part of the rebels.

Meanwhile, Layla was telling Weston about how her ship got snatched by the rebels, and she ended up on Xyphora. If November hadn’t swooped in with his crew, she probably wouldn’t even be here right now.

Weston’s beard puffed up in shock. “Did you guys mess something up? The rebels never did anything on Xyphora!”

Layla blinked, confused. “Wait, how would you know that, Weston?”

“I…” Weston did not know how to explain.

November lounged nearby, grinning as he watched a comedy show, as Weston ran out of lies. He just had to rub it in.” Every rebel my crew nabbed swore up, and down they were rebels.”

“If I ever did something shady and wanted to blame it on you, I’d just yell, ‘Hey, I’m Atlas!’ and call it a day!” Weston huffed, clearly fed up.

Layla could tell Weston wasn’t joking. She’d known him for years and had never doubted him.

She turned to November. “November, where are you keeping the rebels you caught?”

“Once Roger finishes up on Xyphora, they’ll be transferred back to Alpha Prime Prison.”

“Did you question them yourself?” Layla asked.

“Yeah, the commander is exactly the same guy as the one on the wanted list of rebel fugitives.” “So why did they go after our ship? Was it just random?” Layla asked.
