“I barely know him,” Layla said.

“Layla, Tomas is seriously hurt. We’re all hoping you can go check on him. If you need anything, just let us know,” Kierra said. Then, she added, “Even if it’s about Annie.”

Kierra was a big deal in the Knight family. Not just because she was crazy talented, but also because Krish had her back.

If it weren’t for that, when Branden had a thing for her, she would’ve agreed to the marriage. She put Annie in her place instead.

Judging by how she was talking now, it sounded like she could actually help Annie get out of her current mess, stuck with nowhere to call home.

Layla really did want to help her friend.

But the whole thing was kind of bizarre.

“Why does it have to be me?” Layla asked.

Kierra and Chaim exchanged a glance, both pressing their lips together and saying nothing.

Layla turned and walked away.

‘If someone’s suddenly being all nice for no reason, they’re definitely up to no good,’ Layla thought.

Even though Layla really wanted to help Annie out of her mess, with those two keeping quiet, Layla knew in her gut that nothing good ever comes from people acting like that.

Kierra and Chaim hadn’t expected Layla to just up and leave like that.

Chaim looked annoyed. “What now? Layla is as stubborn as a mule. She won’t budge for anything. Did the gene match glitch or something? She’s already hitched. How could she be such a high match for Tomas?”

Tomas had insanely high psychic force, but after clashing with the rebels, his psychic force got messed up, throwing his rut all out of whack. Not even rut blockers could help anymore.

Once he was back on Alpha Prime, they ran his genes through the database to find the best possible match. Only someone with a match over 95% could help Tomas ride out the chaos of his rut without losing control.

But no one could’ve guessed that in all of Alpha Prime, there was actually someone with a whopping 96% match to Tomas.

The Coffey family didn’t waste a second. They decided right then and there to track down Layla.

As for the fact that Layla was already married to a guy named November, the Coffey family just brushed it off like it was

nothing.

Krish just turned a blind eye to it.

Krish knew November had already thrown in his lot with his brother, Atlas.

Layla herself was a top-tier mech engineer.

If the Coffey family could get Layla to divorce November and marry Tomás instead, it’d really get under Atlas’s skin.

The Coffey family had already started reaching out to Karter.

Everyone knew about it, but not a single person asked Layla how she felt about the whole thing.

Luckily, Layla had been off Alpha Prime this whole time. If she’d been around, the Coffey family probably would’ve been camped out at her door already.

But now that Layla was back, Chaim and the others would almost certainly tip off the Coffey family.

Layla had no idea any of this was going on. She just sent another message to Nolan, but it was like throwing a stone into the ocean. No reply, not even a ripple.

‘Nothing bad could have happened to him, right?’ Layla thought.

Back in her dorm, Layla finished picking out her classes for next semester She didn’t forget to text Annie, reminding her to sign up for classes on the school site.

Once she was done with all that, Layla decided to buy a new housekeeping robots and have them delivered to the

apartment. Celia was already stretched thin taking care of the kids alone, and Layla didn’t want her to have to do it all alone.

In Military Headquarters, Alpha Prime, Atlas sat in his black military uniform, chin tilted up, his voice cold as ice

Atlas said, “Roger, you still haven’t found the traitor?”

Roger looked frustrated. “Your Highness, I only brought my most trusted men this time. I handpicked every single one of them. No way there’s a mole among them! I’ve already questioned them all, and they all checked out.”

Atlas shot him a cold look.

He thought, ‘There is a powerful faction working in the shadows, making moves nobody saw coming.

‘Whoever it is, they are setting up a massive scheme.

‘What are they really after?

Atlas’s eyes were half-lidded, coolly scanning the shifting shadows on the floor. Without warning, he shot to his feet and strode out.

Roger rushed after him. “Your Highness, where are we going?”

“You’re not coming,” Atlas replied.

Roger just stood there, totally spaced out, watching Atlas walk away. He was so stunned, he didn’t snap out of it for ages.

‘Oh no, Atlas doesn’t trust me anymore! He doesn’t want me!’ Roger thought.

Nicholas patted him on the shoulder. “Relax, Atlas isn’t mad at you. He still trusts you.”

“But why isn’t Atlas taking me with him? He’s always taken me everywhere with him before!”

“Because there’s a traitor hiding among your men. You should use this chance to do a thorough sweep and figure out who the rat is.”

Roger slouched back to his office, feeling totally defeated. He was just about to text his girlfriend, whom he hadn’t seen in

ages.

Whenever he was in a funk, all he wanted was for Reyna to shower him with some love, hugs, kisses, anything to make him feel better.

But before he could even finish typing, Reyna beat him to it and messaged him first.

Reyna: [Roger, my friend at the gene center, just told me. Tomas and Layla have á 96% gene match!]

Roger was just about to text Reyna for some comfort when he froze.

He immediately called her.

Reyna probably found a quiet spot before answering the call.

“Reyna, what’s going on? Are you talking about the same Layla we know?” Roger asked.

Reyna explained, “Yeah, it’s her, Karter’s adopted daughter, Layla. This is all still hush-hush. Tomas got seriously hurt out there, and it happened right when his rut hit, throwing everything out of balance. His psychic force is on the verge of snapping.

“Only someone with a gene match over 95% can calm him down enough to get through this. And Layla is the top candidate they found!”

Roger nearly lost it. “Are they nuts? Layla has already married Atlas!”

Reyna let out a helpless sigh. “They only know Layla has married, but they have no idea her husband is actually Atlas. Remember? Most people think November is a real person now. Even Krish believes November has switched sides and joined Atlas!

“I just found it out myself, so I messaged Layla to warn her. Figured I should tell you, too. Go let Atlas know.” “Alright!” Roger said.

He hung up, feeling like he’d just respawned, and shot out the door.

He’d only made it a few steps when it hit him.

‘Damn, I could just call Prince Atlas!’ Roger thought.

‘Those two are honestly shameless!’

If Layla had gone in clueless to see Tomas during his rut and refused to play along, there’s no way both of them would’ve walked out of there. Someone would’ve ended up getting dragged out, for sure.

And if that happened, she’d be making enemies for life with the Coffey family, or even Krish.
