Chapter 111 Cheating On Atlas?

Chapter 111 Cheating On Atlas?

Staying in the dorm was no longer an option for Layla.

After weighing her options, she packed up and headed straight for the private royal passage reserved for Atlas. She also sent a signal to the aero-vehicle at the Zimmer Manor, and it came directly to the Imperial Academy to pick her up.

Since she used the royal-only passage, the Sullivan and Coffey families who came looking for Layla ended up with nothing. but disappointment.

Even if they smashed down the door to Layla’s dorm room, they still wouldn’t find her.

Meanwhile, Layla had already returned to the Zimmer Manor by the aero-vehicle.

After tapping in with her optical computer, Layla shot Atlas a quick message to let him know she’d just arrived at his manor.

She really had no other choice. There was no way she was going to drag Celia and the orphanage into this mess. Honestly, nowhere was safer than the Zimmer Manor.

Layla had just finished texting Atlas when she looked up and spotted a woman in the garden.

The woman was dressed in a gardener’s overalls, busy with the flowers and veggies. Her long hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail, her pale cheeks smudged with dirt.

Layla blinked, stunned. “H-Her Majesty?”

“Layla, is that you? Come on over and help me water these,” Leilani said.

“Oh, sure,” Layla replied.

Honestly, the housekeeping bots could’ve done all this, but seeing Leilani out here getting her hands dirty planting veggies herself, Layla couldn’t help but feel a little awed. Without a second thought, she grabbed the hose and started watering.

Layla was still in her school training gear, so she didn’t bother changing. She just rolled up her sleeves and jumped right in, helping Leilani with the planting.

Layla thought, ‘These days, seeds for stuff like cabbage, cucumbers, and tomatoes are practically impossible to buy, since they are rarer than gold dust.’

Sure, Leilani didn’t have much freedom, but being the queen had to come with some privileges.

Meanwhile, Atlas was at Alpha Prime Prison, interrogating three rebels who’d been captured years ago, all by himself. Two of them had suffered complete psychic breakdowns, rambling like lunatics and totally useless for any questioning. The last one was totally lush. He could go days without eating, but he absolutely couldn’t go without his booze.

And Atlas had arrested this guy himself.

His name was Frank.

Frank was only in his thirties, but with that scruffy beard and his constant drinking, he looked more like he was pushing fifty.

When he spotted Atlas, Frank greeted him with a big grin. “Hey, Prince Atlas, you here to drink with me?”

And sure enough, Atlas actually pulled out a bottle of wine and set it right in front of Frank.

Frank’s eyes went wide. “Holy crap, this is a 2022 Lafite from Old Earth! That’s some serious luxury… Prince Atlas, you must want something important from me, huh?”

Frank gripped the bottle tightly, eyeing Atlas with obvious suspicion.

Atlas sat down across from him, one leg casually crossed over the other, hands folded on the table.

“So, you rebels. Are you all being controlled by some kind of implant or chip? Is that why you end up doing all those messed-up, unforgivable things?” Atlas asked.

Frank’s grip on the bottle loosened a little.

“Prince Atlas, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I thought you wanted me to spill where our base is, or maybe some secrets about our leader,” Frank said.

Successfully unlocked!

“And you’d actually tell me if I asked?” Atlas she back

Frank let go of the bottle completely, slumping back into his lazy posture. “Forget it, just take the wine back.”

Atlas knew Frank was hard to crack, but at least he was able to confirm one thing.

Atlas thought, ‘Back in Frank’s time, the rebels really hadn’t used chips to make shifters do bad things.

‘Either the rebels had split into two different factions now, or someone did those things and tried to pin it all on the rebels.

‘None of this is good news.’

Just as Atlas was about to ask another question, Zee’s voice came through his earpiece. “Atlas, I’ve just got three updates. They’re all pretty urgent, so I figured you should know right away.

“First, the Coffey family is searching for Layla. Her genetic compatibility with Tomas is an incredible 96%. Tomas has injured, and his psychic force is unstable. He is on the verge of a meltdown.

“The Coffey family needs someone with a high match to help stabilize him.

“Second, Layla made it out of the Imperial Academy and is back at the manor. She messaged you to let you know.

“And lastly, your mother is out in the garden. She’ll probably bump into Layla.”

Atlas shot to his feet, startling Frank across the table.

Frank swallowed, glancing at Atlas nervously. “What’s up, Prince Atlas? Are you planning to execute me today?”

“I’ll kill you another day,” Atlas said.

“What about the wine?” Frank asked, his eyes glued to the 2022 Lafite.

Atlas grabbed the bottle without a second thought and turned to leave. Frank grumbled under his breath, “Such a stingy guy. He’ll never find a wife!”

Atlas was speechless.

Atlas thought, ‘No way a guy like him has one of those control chips in his body. Looks like I don’t need to dissect him after all.

‘Guess I don’t need to cut him open after all.’

Frank had no clue that his own unreliable, wild streak had just saved him from being dissected.

Atlas hopped into the aero-vehicle and headed straight for his manor. On the way, he found himself hesitating. He wondered, ‘Should I keep up the act as November in front of Layla?

‘Or should I just go back to being myself?

‘Because now my mom is there, too.’

Zee asked with curiosity, “Atlas, you’ve basically merged with your rut-phase self now. Why not just let Layla in on it?”

“Are you asking to get shut down again?” Atlas replied dryly.

“No way! I just want to hang out with Zaa all the time. I even made a robot body for it,” Zee said.

‘It’s a matching couple set!’ Zee thought.

Atlas looked at Zee’s heart-shaped eyes on the screen, and the corner of his mouth twitched.

‘Seriously, even an Al is better at dating than I am, Atlas thought.

In the end, Atlas decided to keep pretending to be November.

He thought, ‘That is the only way Layla would feel at ease around me.

‘If I go back to my usual self, Layla probably wouldn’t want to stick around the manor.

‘With the Coffey family and the Sullivan family out there looking for her, it is definitely safer for her to stay home.’

As soon as Atlas stepped into the manor, he was greeted by the sound of his mother’s laughter echoing through the house. His mother, as the queen, usually the picture of grace and dignity, was now in a gardener’s overalls, her face smudged with dirt, and she was laughing at Layla, who had a streak of grime on her cheek and leaves tangled in her hair.

“Layla, with all those green leaves on your head, are you trying to cheat on Atlas?” Leilani joked.

Atlas, who walked in just in time to hear it all, was speechless.

‘Seriously, only my mom would say something like that, Atlas thought.

Layla felt super embarrassed. She’d always thought Leilani was kind of intimidating, but also really easy to get along with. Last time they met, it was all polite small talk and awkward silences,

But after just one round of gardening together, they were suddenly gossiping like lifelong girlfriends, sharing everything without holding back.

Not exactly the kind of joke to make with a brand-new friend, especially when the guy they were talking about was walking straight toward them.

When Layla saw Atlas in full military uniform, not a hair out of place beneath his cap, she instinctively shot to her feet. Layla froze, thinking, ‘Wait, that can’t be November, right?’
