Chapter 122 Layla’s My Wife
Chapter 122 Layla’s My Wife
Layla was a chill person.
Back then, even when the Sullivans turned their backs on her, she managed to steady herself in no time and walked away with quiet dignity.
Of course, it still stung deep down, but Layla had always been quick to shake off the pain and move on.
But now, the top mech suit in all of Alpha Prime was on one knee right in front of her, and Layla’s gorgeous eyes were filled with disbelief.
“W-What are you doing?” Layla blurted out, unable to hide her shock.
Layla knew there was no way she could get a mech suit that huge back on its feet, even if she wanted to.
Ares looked up, its mechanical voice carrying a heavy, worn-out vibe. “You have my father’s DNA.”
Layla froze for a moment. ‘Ares’s father? Isn’t that the legendary mech engineer?’ she thought.
“How do you even know that?” Layla asked.
“Just now, your psychic force leaked out. My father was a powerful wolf shifter, and he mastered all three divisions, Command, Trooper, and Mech Engineering,” Ares said.
Layla was stunned speechless.
Ares looked at her, practically vibrating with excitement. “Do you know where he is now?”
After losing its first master, the founding emperor, Ares had been lying dormant in the royal mech hangar ever since.
It had hoped to meet its father’s descendants, but none ever came. Then, it crossed paths with Atlas, the only one it had ever truly approved of in all these years.
So, Atlas became Ares’s second master.
But even then, Ares still yearned for its father. The mech engineer who built it was, in every sense, its father.
Layla went quiet for a moment and then shook her head. “I’ve been at the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core for as long as I can remember.
“The Sullivan family from Alpha Prime took me in for ten years, but I honestly have no clue who my real parents are, let alone where that legendary mech engineer you’re talking about might be.”
Once she said that, the girl and the machine both lost in thought.
But Ares seemed to accept it. It had been so many years, and even Atlas had tried to help it search for its father, but they’d never found a trace.
Just getting to meet someone from its father’s bloodline was already a stroke of luck!
Ares tilted its head, mechanical curiosity in its voice. “You never tried to look for your family?”
“I did, but there was never a single clue,” Layla replied.
When she was a kid, Layla had no idea where even to begin. Later, after she became Hades, and had all the money and connections she could want, she still couldn’t dig up anything about her real parents. Not a trace.
With interstellar birth rates dropping hard every year, nobody would just give up their kid unless life was truly unbearable or they had absolutely no other way out.
Or maybe, she’d been kidnapped and left at the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core’s doorstep.
When she was little, Layla used to blame her birth parents, but as she grew up, she eventually made peace with it.
“Maybe they had their reasons,” Layla said.
Ares was incredibly intelligent, almost as if it had a mind of its own. Whenever it looked at Layla, it felt just like some wise old uncle watching over his favorite niece.
Noticing she was feeling low, it reached out its huge metal hand, trying to give her a gentle, comforting pat on the head.
Atlas had just finished up his work and hurried downstairs, eager to see Layla.
But as soon as he entered the room, he saw Ares waving its giant hand looking like it was about to smack Layla across the

room.
“Ares!” Atlas snapped, his voice cold and cutting. The unit bother mumy is usual edge. Layla and Ares were both left startled by his sudden outburst.

He hurried over to Layla, and when he saw she was totally fine, he breathed a sigh of relief
Without a second thought, he shielded her behind his back.
Layla quickly realized what was happening and tugged at Atlas’s sleeve. “Ninth, don’t be so harsh. Ares was just greeting me, not trying to hurt me.”
“Yeah,” Ares rumbled in agreement, its voice low and steady.
Atlas didn’t even notice she was saying Ares was greeting Layla. All he heard was her saying, “Don’t be so harsh.”
Then Atlas remembered that November should never be rough with Layla.
‘Damn, I totally forgot about it, Atlas thought, a little annoyed with himself.
Atlas’s blue eyes flickered, and he looked genuinely upset. “I was scared out of my mind! Its fist was about to smash your head!”
‘Seriously, I just wanted to give her a gentle pat on the head!’ Ares thought.
Layla knew November was just worried about her, so she gave him a gentle smile. “I was just chatting with Ares.
“You know how much I love mech suits as legendary as Ares. Of course, I had a ton of questions. We really hit it off.”
“Yeah,” Ares rumbled in agreement again.
Atlas found himself feeling strangely baffled. ‘When did Layla and Ares suddenly get so chummy?’ he wondered.
He’d never seen Ares go along with anyone so easily before.
Not even his dad, Dakota, ever got that kind of treatment.
Atlas lowered his gaze, his fox tail brushing gently against Layla’s arm. “Layla, it’s getting late. Let’s go get some rest.”
Ares paused, a little surprised. “So, what’s your relationship?”
Atlas loved answering that question. He slung his arm around Layla’s shoulders, grinning from ear to ear. “Layla’s my wife!”
Ares was totally stunned. The one it’d been searching for all this time, its father’s own flesh and blood, was actually together with its current master.
For a mech suit with a heart, this was honestly the sweetest kind of comfort it could ever get.
Layla thought she saw a shimmer in Ares’s metal eyes. ‘Was that a hint of tears?’ she thought.
Atlas sent Ares back into the mech suit key, but he couldn’t help noticing that Ares really seemed to like Layla.
The fact that his own mech suit liked Layla as much as he did left Atlas with mixed feelings. He was happy, but also a little jealous.
Layla didn’t pick up on Atlas’s mixed emotions. As they walked back, she couldn’t stop thinking about what Ares had told
her.
Once they got back to their room, Layla turned to Atlas and asked, “Ninth, do you know anything about Ares’s creator?”
“Not really,” Atlas replied. “I just know he was a good friend of my grandfather, but he went missing a long time ago. Oh, and he had the same last name as you, Sullivan.
“His name is Louis Sullivan. Actually, the Sullivan family on Alpha Prime these days is probably related to him somehow.”
Layla blinked in surprise.
‘So, after all those twists and turns, it was just fate messing with me? she thought, a little dazed.
If Ares wasn’t wrong, and she really was Louis’s descendant, then Karter and the Sullivans were all connected to him, too.
Guess that’s why Karter picked her out of all the kids at the orphanage. Maybe it really was blood calling blood.
“Layla, it’s late. Let’s get some sleep,” Atlas said, feeling a sudden wave of anxiety. Right now, all he wanted was to wrap his tail around her and drift off, leaving all the messy stuff behind.
Layla nodded.
There was no need to rush things with Louis. Now that she had a lead, she could always dig into it later.
But just as they were about to get ready for bed, Layla’s optical computer started ringing again.
Atlas’s face darkened, and Layla couldn’t help but laugh a little, feeling both amused. Still, she picked up the call. It was Annie.
Annie was practically bouncing with anxiety on the other end. “Layla, you won’t believe this! Xanthe actually got into the Command Division at Imperial Academy with top marks!”
