Chapter 124 Stolen Glances
Chapter 124 Stolen Glances
“Her husband showed up, and the two of them went outside to talk,” Celia said.
She glanced over at November, who was playing happily with the kids in the yard.
Celia sighed, “Commander Randall Norris always looks so cold and strict. The kids are all kind of scared of him. But Ninth is different. Just look, all the kids adore him.”
Layla couldn’t help but laugh.
‘No, no, Randall’s coldness is actually pretty mild, she thought. ‘If it were the real Atlas, it wouldn’t just be cold. It’d be downright terrifying! It wouldn’t just be the kids who’d be scared. Even Ms. Brennan would probably freak out.”
By the time lunch rolled around, Annie was the only one who came back. Randall was already gone.
Annie’s eyes were sparkling, and she was beaming with excitement.
It was obvious she was totally into Randall.
Just seeing him and chatting with him made her so happy that she felt like a cat who could sprout wings and take off.
During lunch, Annie spotted November sitting close to Layla and said with envy, “I wish I could spend every day with Randall like you two.”
Layla blinked in surprise.
Truth was, they didn’t actually get to spend that much time together.
Especially with Atlas’s rut ending in the next couple of days.
Layla glanced at her plate, which November had stacked with so much food it formed a little mountain.
eyes were shining as he looked at her. “Layla, taste this!”
Honestly, being able to spend every day with the one she loved really was happiness.
But this marriage had never given Layla any real sense of security.
November sensed Layla’s unease and reached out, firmly clasping her hand.
With the tablecloth hiding their hands, no one else could see.
But Layla could feel November’s large, warm hand tightly holding her cool one.
It was so warm.
Celia, sitting nearby, didn’t notice their little secret gesture.
She looked at November and said gently, “By the way, Ninth, you’ve been here for a few days now, but I still haven’t had the chance to meet your mother. When is she free? I’d like to visit her.”
Celia cared deeply for Layla and was willing to be there for her like family.
She thought maybe this would make November’s family warm up to Layla even more.
Layla’s first instinct was to say no.
‘Are you kidding? If Ms. Brennan ever met Her Majesty, everything would blow up!’ Layla thought.
But November spoke up, “Sure, I’ll ask my mom when she’s free and have her come over.”
“Are you sure? It’s always so loud here,” Celia said.
“It’s fine. My mom loves kids.”
“Just give me a heads-up so I can whip up some treats for your mom.”
“Okay.”
Layla stared in disbelief as the two of them sorted it all out in no time.
She gave November a look, but he just teased her palm under the table.
Annie, sitting nearby, watched them flirting right in front of her and huffed, wishing Randall were here even more.
November really wanted to spend the whole day with Layla, but Krish was already off meeting with the king and the Council, trying to get Victor to take over the rest of Nola
November dragged his feet and said, “Layla, I h.

November finally left, but he kept glancing back at her with every step he took.
Annie gave Layla’s shoulder a quick pat. “Come on, quit staring, he’s long gone. So, are you heading back to school today?” “Yeah,” Layla said.
“Let’s go together,” Annie grinned.
Layla turned to her. “Did things get sorted out at home?”
Annie shook her head. “Nope, things just blew up between the Knight and James families. The James family tried to drag Kierra away by force, and both sides’ troopers ended up throwing down.
“The James family’s place got trashed. Half of it is in ruins now. And get this, Kierra herself apparently blew up two buildings.”
Layla could only stare speechlessly.
One thing was for sure. Those two families were now sworn enemies.
But it looked like Annie wouldn’t be the main target of their drama anymore.
That was the only silver lining here.
After packing up, they said goodbye to Celia and hopped into an aero-vehicle, heading back to Imperial Academy.
Annie stretched and yawned. “Layla, maybe I should just apply to be your roommate!”
Layla was just about to agree.
But Annie shook her head. “Nope, never mind. November’s always popping in, and you two are so lovey-dovey. I don’t want to be drowned in all your PDA. Watching you two get all cute together would just make me miss Randall even more.” Layla couldn’t help but laugh as she split up with her.
Back at her dorm, the first thing Layla did was pack up the mech suit keys she’d finished.
She sent them off to the address that November had given her before.
She still hadn’t touched the Hellwing Starbeast skeleton.
Even though Atlas told her she could mess with Ares however she liked, and Layla was itching to give it a shot, she was still super cautious about it.
Layla sent a quick message to Weston. [Weston, if you had a Hellwing Starbeast skeleton and an Ares mech suit, how would you go about integrating the skeleton into the mech?]
Weston replied, [Holy crap!]
Layla thought, ‘This old guy usually takes ages to reply to my messages. Sometimes it feels like he never will. But today he answered in seconds. I’m honestly not used to it.’
Weston: [Layla, where’s the skeleton? Actually, scratch that. Where are you right now? I’ll come find you!]
Layla: [No time, I’ve got the opening ceremony soon. We’ll deal with the skeleton stuff later.]
Weston’s reaction just made Layla want to be extra careful about all this.
Besides, there was probably more between her and Ares than she even realized.
But Weston just wouldn’t let up. He kept sending message after message.
Weston: [Layla, I’m pretty far from Alpha Prime right now. It’ll take me about a week to get back.] Weston: [Don’t mess with the skeleton yet. Wait for me to come back, and we’ll work on it together.]
Layla: [Weston, do you know Louis Sullivan?]
