Chapter 136 Stay Away During Your Rut
Chapter 136 Stay Away During Your Rut
‘No need to ask. I can tell you got beaten up,” Layla said.
“You don’t even care about me? Just here to gloat?” Jayvon complained.
“We’re not close,” Layla replied.
Layla found the school doctor and explained what she needed. The doctor looked a bit awkward. “These meds are banned now. We’re not allowed to sell them at school anymore.”
“Why? They used to be available,” Layla asked.
“Yeah, apparently Prince Atlas just issued a new rule, the doctor replied.
Layla didn’t know what to say.
Layla bit her lip, cursing that cold-hearted man in her mind. ‘If you’re so tough, why don’t you just skip your rut?’
She made up her mind. Next time, she’d kick November out and never let him set foot in her bedroom again.
Layla had no choice but to come up with another plan. Jayvon watched her leave, shaking his head with a soft sigh. ‘She acts all clever, so how can she be this dense?’ Jayvon mused to himself.
Layla wasn’t dumb. She was just seriously irritated. Back in her dorm, she snatched up her optical computer and dialed Atlas’s number.
Layla almost never called Atlas when she wasn’t in rut, so when Atlas saw her name pop up on the caller ID, he was honestly caught off guard.
He signaled Andrew to pause, and then walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the soft, gentle sunlight filtering through the glass.
“Layla, is there something you need?” Atlas asked.
“Why won’t you let me take those birth control meds? Why?” Layla demanded.
“They’re bad for you,” Atlas replied.
“But isn’t it you who’s hurting me the most? Layla shot back.
Atlas gritted his teeth, thinking. ‘Looks like she’s got some guts now. Not scared of me anymore?’
But she also seemed to have even more complaints about him.
He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.
Atlas said, totally deadpan, “You know what the birth rate is in the whole galaxy right now. It’s less than one in a thousand. “Every year, there are fewer and fewer babies born. Honestly, the chances of you getting pregnant are basically zero.” Layla was speechless for a moment. She couldn’t exactly tell him about her family’s special genes, so she said, dead serious, “Your Highness, you can’t just gamble on probability.
“If that’s how it is, then we should nip it in the bud and make sure nothing goes wrong in the future.”
Atlas’s brow twitched. “What do you mean?”
“Next time you’re in a rut, don’t come to me,” Layla said.
Layla knew there was no way she could call off the wedding right now, but if she put in some effort, she could at least keep Atlas out of her sight for now.
No, it wasn’t just Atlas. She didn’t want to see November either.
After the call cut off, Atlas set his optical computer aside, his expression turning stormy in an instant.
It was like the temperature in the office had dropped several degrees.
Andrew pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses. “Your Highness, there’s a way to give you a solid excuse to stay in rut for a long time, or even keep yourself in a juvenile phase. But if you go that route, Prince Krish might notice.”
Atlas said flatly, “Forget it.”
Layla and Bruce met up in a private room on the fox on the Lenses Fateoria.
They chatted as they ate lunch.

Layla stirred her coffee. “Bruce, how did you even know to go looking for me at Wastelands-9 Orphan Core? And do you

know why they left me behind back then?”
“Layla, slow down. One thing at a time. First, you were actually stolen away,” Bruce said.
Layla’s hand froze around her coffee spoon.
Bruce took a huge bite of his smoked chicken pizza. As a shifter with a strong psychic force, he could really put away food. He’d already devoured two whole 12-inch pizzas by himself.
“How did they steal me?” Layla asked.
Bruce said, “I don’t really know the specifics. I was way too young back then. Or actually, I wasn’t even born yet? Anyway, something major went down in the family, and someone used the chaos to snatch you away.
“After that, you just disappeared. Even though it seemed hopeless, your parents never stopped searching for you. Honestly, coming to Imperial Academy was kind of a shot in the dark. I was just hoping I might run into you.”
He looked up, grinning from ear to ear. “Turns out I really did get lucky. I found you the moment I got here!”
Layla felt like Bruce was just brushing things off, making it sound way too easy, or maybe he was holding something back on purpose.
‘Seriously, if my background was that simple to figure out, why did Weston and I come up empty all this time?’ Layla thought to herself.
But Bruce really was her cousin. Their DNA matched, no doubt about it. Layla finally pushed her plate of grilled sausage toward him. “When the break comes, I’ll go back with you and see for myself.”
“Sure!” Bruce replied with a big grin.
“Can I get their contact info first?” Layla asked.
“Back home, the signal’s pretty bad. I told them I found you, but they still haven’t gotten back to me. Let’s just wait for their reply,” Bruce said.
Layla’s mouth twitched.
‘Just how far off the grid is this place?’ Layla thought.
They had class later that afternoon, so after lunch, Layla and Bruce headed out together. On their way, they bumped into Xanthe and Caleb.
Layla was kind of impressed since they were still tangled up together.
But honestly, the vibe between them was totally different from before.
Before, Xanthe was always the one trying to please Caleb, with him calling all the shots. But now, Caleb was acting totally clingy, following her around like a lovesick puppy.
Xanthe, on the other hand, couldn’t hide her impatience.
The James family used to have their noses in the air. First, they looked down on Layla for being adopted, and then they wrote off Xanthe for her lack of talent.
But now that Xanthe had suddenly turned into a top-tier shifter, they were falling over themselves to suck up to her. Rumor had it that they even brought gifts straight to the Sullivan Manor to apologize in person.
Layla had always found Xanthe a bit odd and usually trusted her instincts to steer clear. But to her surprise, Xanthe came right over, smiling brightly. “Layla, what a coincidence! Here for lunch as well?”
“What else would I be doing here?” Layla replied,
“You’ve got a point,” Xanthe said, not bothered at all. She turned to Bruce, still smiling. “Bruce, since when did you get so chummy with Layla?”
Bruce and Xanthe were classmates, and even though he didn’t really know her, his cheetah shifter senses were extra sharp. He just couldn’t stand Xanthe.
Everything about her felt off, like she was putting on an act.
It was like her soul didn’t belong in that body at all.
Bruce rolled his eyes, sounding fed up. “Do I really need to clear it with you just to talk to her?”
Neither Layla nor Bruce bothered to hide their attitude. They both just couldn’t stand Xanthe.
Caleb, standing off to the side, immediately got annoyed. “Layla, what’s your deal? Xanthe’s just trying to be nice, and you two are giving her attitude.
“And wasn’t November your husband? Seriously, it’s barely been a few days, and you’re already with someone else?”

“Whether I’ve switched partners or not is none of your concern. At least you never switch, right? Anyway, I wish you two a lifetime of happiness together.” Layla couldn’t be bothered to argue, so she turned and walked off.
Bruce turned around as well with his hands in his pockets and headed back to his dorm to catch some sleep.
Xanthe just watched Layla walk away, something unreadable flickering in her eyes.
Caleb kept badmouthing Layla under his breath. “Good thing I ditched her when I did. Who would’ve guessed she’d turn
out to be such a flirt? Tsk, tsk, already cozying up to some freshman while November’s not around?”
Xanthe turned to him, her voice icy. “Shut up. They’re not like that. I asked you to get me into the Crown Squad. When’s that actually happening?”
