Chapter 138 Hello, I’m Your Dad

Chapter 138 Hello, I’m Your Dad

“No,” Layla replied offhandedly. But right after, Layla felt that it was a little unfair to Atlas.

She logged in to the StarNet and saw it was flooded with well-wishes for Krish.

‘Seriously? Prince Atlas has been busting his tail to keep Alpha Prime safe for years, and Prince Krish is still the crowd favorite? How is that fair?’ Layla grumbled inwardly.

Suddenly, Layla remembered that time their ship had that accident.

She’d helped all the passengers, but afterwards, instead of being grateful, they gossiped behind her back, saying no guy would dare marry a woman with that kind of fighting skills.

They were all afraid she’d end up beating her husband.

Turned out, people treated Atlas the exact same way.

“Layla, what are you thinking about? Oh, guess what? My family finally gave the green light for me and Randall! This weekend, I’m bringing him home!” Annie said, her eyes squinting with joy.

If she hadn’t tucked her tail away, it would definitely be swishing with pride.

“That’s awesome,” Layla said, genuinely happy for her friend.

Just as they were chatting, Bruce came over with his tray and sat down right across from them.

He said excitedly, “Layla, Uncle Daniel just messaged back! I’m adding you to our family chat group!”

“Okay,” Leilani replied.

Their relationship hadn’t gone public yet, but Annie, being Layla’s bestie, was totally in the loop.

She could tell they had something important to talk about, so she slipped away to give them some privacy.

Since it wasn’t really private outside, they headed back to Layla’s dorm. She turned off the lights and closed the blinds, plunging the room into darkness.

Then Bruce fired up the optical computer’s video projection.

On the other end, it was pitch black, blending into the darkness. Suddenly, a beam of light cut through.

The next second, that 32-inch screen was packed with faces.

Layla didn’t know what to say.

Bruce coughed awkwardly and blurted out, “Alright, guys, can you guys chill? You’re freaking Layla out! And where’s Uncle Daniel?”

Layla’s eyes widened in surprise.

She thought, ‘Wait, I have this many relatives?’

But then she realized that none of these uncles looked even remotely alike.

Some of them even looked like they were from totally different planets.

Bruce explained, “Only my dad is Uncle Daniel’s real brother. The other seven are just family by choice. And there are two more uncles, but they’re not at the base… I mean, home. They’re out handling some business.”

After seven heads, each sporting their own unique hair color and style/ were shuffled out of the way, a middle-aged man’s face finally came into view.

He looked refined, like a friendly literature teacher, gentle and approachable. Even the fine lines at the corners of his eyes made him seem warm and comforting.

Right now, he was clearly a little emotional. His usually calm eyes were filled with a strong emotion he was trying to keep in check.

“Are you… Layla?” he asked, his voice a little shaky.

The moment Layla saw him, she felt a rush of heat all over, and her heart was pounding. Even though it was just a virtual projection, she just knew.

This man right there in front of her was her real father.

As a high-tier shifter, there was no way she’d motorE

Daniel seemed even more excited and nervous than she was. His voice trembled with emotion. “Hello, Layla. I’m your dad.”

Someone couldn’t hold back a laugh.

Everyone cracked up.

“Man, Daniel, you’re a riot!” one of the uncles teased.

‘I can’t, this is too funny!” another one cackled.

Daniel was left speechless.

‘I could throttle these brothers. Seriously, making me look bad in front of my girl!’ Daniel grumbled to himself.

Even Bruce, sitting next to Layla, couldn’t help but snicker. He tried to keep it together since he was the youngest, but his shoulders kept shaking, totally giving away how amused he was.

Layla couldn’t help but laugh, too.

All the nerves and anxiety she’d been feeling just melted away.

With a small smile, she said, “Hello, Dad.”

The man on screen, looking totally exasperated, suddenly froze. Then, in the next moment, he spun his chair around. Now all Layla could see was the back of his head.

Layla was stunned for a moment.

Bruce scooted closer and whispered, “Uncle Daniel’s probably getting emotional. Bet he’s about to cry and doesn’t want us to see him lose it.”

Soon, another voice came through from the other side.

“Seriously, Daniel, are you actually tearing up? Big tough guy like you, getting all emotional?” one of the uncles teased.

“Shut up!” Daniel shot back.

Layla just stared, totally stunned. This whole reunion was nothing like she’d pictured. It was total chaos, not the touching family moment she’d imagined.

Still, she had to admit, it wasn’t so bad.

Once Daniel finally got a grip on his emotions, he and Layla had a heart-to-heart, and Layla finally got the rundown on what really went down all those years ago.

Just like Bruce had said, their family crossed the wrong person, and that guy snatched Layla away right after she was born.

He was planning to sell her. After all, in the age of space travel, kids were crazy valuable, especially shifter kids with top-tier

abilities.

But the buyer turned out to be a total flake. The moment they got Layla, they dumped her without a second thought.

Someone picked her up and sent her straight to the orphanage nearby.

Layla was floored. She’d been shuffled from one hand to another right after she was born, and then, eleven years ago, the Sullivan family had adopted her from the orphanage.

Daniel’s eyes softened as he said, “Layla, I’m just so glad that you made it through. You’ve been through so much.”

As soon as he realized Layla was his daughter, he immediately had his people switch gears and dig deep into everything that happened to her, from her time at the orphanage all the way up to now.

His heart ached for her. She’d suffered way too much.

Layla, though, was surprisingly upbeat. “Yeah, I’ve had my share of tough times, but I’ve also met some really good people along the way, especially Ms. Brennan. Oh, and by the way, what about my mom?”

Daniel’s face went still, his expression suddenly falling silent.

Bruce paused for a few seconds, and his face clouded with regret. He gave Layla a small shake of his head.

Layla’s smile slowly faded.

“I’m sorry…” Layla murmured.

Daniel let out a long sigh. “Don’t be sorry, Layla. If anyone should apologize, it’s me. Your mother… There was an accident, and she passed away back then…”

Layla paused for a moment, and then asked, “What was she like?”

Daniel said, “She was super lively, sweet, and kind, just the kind of person everyone loved to be around. We’ve got some home videos, but it’s tough to send them over.

“When you’re on break, you and Bruce should come home, and I’ll show them to you.”

“Alright,” Layla replied.

Maybe because they were so far apart, the connection kept cutting out, and in the end, the call just dropped.

But Layla used her optical computer to join a group chat called “Loving Family”.

‘Man, that group name is a total throwback,’ Layla thought.

Bruce scratched his head, seeing Layla looking a little out of it. “Layla, you alright?”

Layla wiped her nose and took a deep breath. “I’m okay. Just… got a lot of news today. I just need some time to let it all sink in.”

Comforting others wasn’t really Bruce’s thing, and luckily for him, he had class and could make his escape.

But before he left, Bruce got serious. “Layla, does Xanthe have it out for you or something?”

“Yeah, you could say that. Why?” Layla replied.

“Layla, trust me, my instincts are spot on. That woman’s trouble. You’d better keep your guard up around her!” Bruce warned.
