Chapter 139 Trying To Get Her To Cheat?

Bruce was a cheetah shifter, with alertness and agility that were off the charts.

His instincts were never wrong.

When Xanthe was brought up, Layla looked thoughtful. “I can’t believe she actually came in first.”

Bruce, though, had fallen asleep during the test and didn’t finish, so he only got second place.

He scratched his head and said, “If I’d known, I would’ve just answered a few more and snatched first from her.”

Layla and Bruce chatted for a bit, but didn’t get any answers. The only thing they knew for sure was that Xanthe wasn’t the same as before. She’d really changed.

Sure enough, just a couple of days later, word got out that Xanthe had joined the Crown Squad.

Since Tomas still hadn’t woken up, she was temporarily taking his place in the Crown Squad’s command position.

The other four in the Crown Squad weren’t having it, but the fact was, Xanthe was way too strong, and Krish totally had his eye on her.

He even had dinner with her alone.

While the other four members of the Crown Squad were eating in the dining hall, they couldn’t help but gossip about it. They just couldn’t stand Xanthe, this girl who’d suddenly parachuted into their squad.

On that, all four of them agreed 100%.

Romeo said, “Why don’t we try asking Layla for help again? If she stays with Tomas during his rut, he might actually recover!” Chaim, the mech engineer, spoke up right away, “I’m on board, but don’t count on me to talk to Layla. We’re not exactly on good terms.”

For a moment, the private room went dead silent.

Finally, the three of them turned to Kierra, who’d been quiet the whole time.

Kierra was speechless.

But before Kierra could even try to talk her cousin Annie into helping, Chaim had already seized a chance to approach Layla.

It was a hands-on class for Class S mech engineers, and they got the rare chance to tour the military’s mech hangar.

Seriously, this place had like 80% of all the mech suits on Alpha Prime.

Layla was totally into it.

With the guide leading the way, everyone-students and teachers-got to tour the mech hangar together.

Shayla patiently walked everyone through the details.

Someone mentioned the strongest mech suit in Alpha Prime, Ares.

Layla was eyeing a lightweight flight mech suit when she overheard her classmates talking. It suddenly hit her that last time, Atlas had asked her to modify Ares.

No, it was actually November who wanted her to modify Ares.

To be honest, Layla was dying to try her hand at it.

The Hellwing Starbeast skeleton was still kept at Atlas’s Manor.

Just then, Chaim came over, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else. For once, he was actually humble enough to ask, mumbling, “Layla, can you do me a favor?”

“Is this about Tomas again?” Layla asked.

“Yeah,” Chair replied.

“Sorry, I can’t help,” Layla said flatly.

Chaim almost lost his cool, but when he met Layla’s steady gaze, he took a deep breath and managed to keep it together. “Layla, please, I’m begging you! Xanthe’s trying to steal Tomas’s spot, and none of us can stand her. We’re asking you, could you help bring Tomas back?” Chaim pleaded, desperation written all over his face.

No way in hell would Layla ever help with that.

Unless she was totally out of her mind.

‘Or maybe it’s the ones begging me for help who are actually crazy?’ Layla thought.

Seeing that Layla still refused to help, Chaim got desperate.

He blurted out, “Xanthe struts around like she’s better than everyone, totally looks down on us. Honestly, if you ask me, she’ s even more unbearable than you ever were!”

Layla was speechless. ‘Wow, and you still have the nerve to ask me for a favor after all that?’ she thought.

Chaim clapped his hand over his mouth, realizing what he’d just blurted out, and quickly muttered an apology. “Sorry, I really mean it. I’m begging you to help Tomas.

“He’s honestly one of the best. He’s a good guy and is super talented. He doesn’t deserve to be stuck like that.”

“I’m not cheating on my husband,” Layla said, her voice firm.

“Hey, don’t be like that, we’re just trying to help Tomas! You don’t have to actually do anything. Just let out a little pheromone and see if it works, okay?” Chaim urged.

Layla gave Chaim a cold look.

For shifters, asking someone to release pheromones was basically the same as hitting on them.

‘Is he seriously trying to get me to cheat?’ Layla thought.

Layla said coldly, “Chaim, you want to find out what my fists feel like?”

Chaim shut up real fast.

Layla was the toughest mech engineer in the whole Imperial Academy.

And he had gotten his ass kicked by her before.

As the students were heading out after their mech hangar tour, they ran smack into a squad of stellar rangers, all decked out in sharp uniforms.

And right at the front, with a whole crowd trailing behind him, was Atlas himself.
