Chapter 145 Definitely Not Because He Likes Me
On the other end of the line, there was a brief pause before a laugh broke out.
“Atlas, you finally punched him! I’ve been waiting for this day for ages,” that person said.
Layla, being a high-tier shifter with sharp hearing, instantly recognized the voice on the other end as Leilani.
Leilani’s tone was surprisingly light, with even a hint of delight.
Atlas saw Layla step out, nodded to her, and motioned to the hot milk and sandwiches on the table. He kept talking to his mom on the phone, “Because he used trigger pheromones on Layla.”
“What? Is Layla okay?” Leilani asked, her voice full of concern.
“She’s fine. She’s right here with me,” Atlas replied.
Leilani knew her son well. She instantly realized the two of them must’ve just gone through a rut together. Honestly, she’d waited until now to call, just to give them time.
Leilani couldn’t help but think, “ow, is Atlas actually feeling shy? That’s almost unheard of.
‘This is hilarious. My son, getting awkward? Never thought I’d see the day.’
Leilani said, “Let me talk to Layla.”
“Okay,” Atlas replied.
Atlas had Zee switch the call to projection mode, and Leilani’s hologram appeared on the virtual screen.
“Your Majesty!” Layla set down her milk and quickly stood up.
Leilani said gently, “No need to be so formal. Did you forget what you should call me?”
“Leilani…” Layla murmured.
Leilani didn’t mind. She asked gently, “How are you? You’re not hurt, are you?”
Layla felt a bit awkward. She pressed her lips together and nodded. “I’m fine. Prince Krish hadn’t even had a chance to take me away before Prince Atlas showed up.”
“That’s what he should’ve done. But Layla, are you still not planning to go public with your relationship with Atlas? If Prince Krish knew you were Atlas’s partner, he definitely wouldn’t have tried anything,” Leilani said.
Layla’s grip on her glass tightened suddenly. She lowered her eyes, staring at the floor.
Not long ago, she and Atlas had gone through their rut together right here, on the deep red, vintage-patterned carpet. But…
Leilani understood Layla’s worries and didn’t press her. She softened her voice, “If you don’t want to make it public, then you don’t have to for now.
“But since Atlas stood up to Prince Krish, and Prince Krish now knows how much you mean to Atlas, he won’t dare mess with you again unless it comes to a real falling out.”
Layla looked up. “Will this bring any trouble to Prince Atlas?”
Leilani said, “There might be a little trouble, but it’s nothing major. I’ll take care of it for you two. Anyway, you must be starving. Go grab something to eat.
“I’ve already sent some food over, and it should be arriving soon. You’re way too skinny, Layla. Make sure to eat up and put some meat on those bones.”
“Thank you, Your… Leilani,” Layla replied.
“That’s my girl,” Leilani said warmly.
Leilani gave Atlas a gentle look before hanging up.
Atlas had been sitting in the armchair the entire time, dressed in a new set of military fatigues, not the ones he’d worn earlier in the mech hangar.
The dark, sharp uniform, combined with his icy, detached look, made it clear that he wasn’t in the mood for company.
Layla felt a bit awkward and tried to change the subject. “Is Ms. Mcgrath okay?”
“She’s fine. Her partner came to get her. Shayla’s no fool. She knows that keeping her mouth shut is the only way to avoid trouble with either Prince Krish or me,” Atlas resid

hangar?”
“Yeah,” Atlas replied.
“Who were they, anyway? I’m just curious. Why did Prince Krish suddenly show up like that? And isn’t it kind of strange for him to be carrying trigger pheromones on him all the time?” Layla asked.
All these things that seemed totally unrelated at first were suddenly piling up at once. It was hard not to get suspicious. And just because he was Prince Krish didn’t mean Layla was going to just let it go as if nothing had happened.
She was the type to hold a grudge.
Atlas glanced up, eyes narrowing. “I’ve always had my doubts about that other rebel group, the ones who fought like killing machines. I suspected they might be connected to Prince Krish.
“And now, the mech hangar got hit by a mutated starbeast, and that guy looked like he could actually control them. If Prince Krish is mixed up with a crew like that, too…”
‘So the real question is, what’s Prince Krish really after?’ Layla wondered.
Layla pressed, “What was that guy even doing in the mech hangar?”
“It looked like he was trying to steal some top-tier mech suits, but making such a big scene just to draw me away… That doesn’t really add up,” Atlas replied.
‘If Prince Krish showing up wasn’t just a coincidence, then what’s his connection to that guy?’ Layla thought.
‘What’s their goal?’ Layla wondered.
Maybe talking about all this helped them both chill out, and weirdly enough, they were totally in sync, like they just got each other without even trying.
It seemed like that 100% genetic match thing wasn’t just about rutting after all.
Layla caught Atlas watching her, so she ducked her head and made quick work of the food on the table.
She really was hungry.
Just then, the fancy spread Leilani had sent over arrived, and Atlas got a message from the King, asking him to come to the palace.
Probably to talk about him punching Krish.
But Leilani had already said she’d handled it all. The King knew Layla was Atlas’s partner.
But since it was Krish who got punched, and he still didn’t know about Layla and Atlas’s relationship, Atlas had to play along for now.
“I’m heading to the palace. I’ll have someone take you back to school. Take the food with you. Mom sent it for you,” Atlas
said.
“Okay,” Layla replied.
They said a stiff goodbye, but it felt like something was different between them now.
But in the end, Layla never asked the one thing she really wanted to know. She wanted to know why he punched Krish.
“It’s not like he did it because he likes me… right?” Layla sighed. She didn’t ask, worried she’d just be reading too much into things. Luckily, everything turned out fine.
On her way back to school, she shot Shayla a quick message to check that she was okay.
When she opened up her optical computer, her inbox was flooded with worried texts from Annie, Alex, Wallace, and even Jayvon.
She replied to each of them, letting them know she was safe.
Meanwhile, Atlas walked into the palace. The King was sitting on the couch, and Krish was looking pale and miserable, slumped there and coughing every so often, his handkerchief stained with blood.
When Atlas arrived, Krish was saying in a frail voice to the King, “Father, it’s not Atlas’s fault. Maybe Layla freaked out a little too much, and that’s why Atlas misunderstood the situation…”
Krish’s shift tier wasn’t high, and seeing him cough up blood, the King felt a stab of worry. He shot Atlas a frown as he came in, thinking, ‘Layla is Atlas’s partner, so that’s probably why the kid snapped and threw a punch.
‘Still, taking a swing at your own brother is crossing the line, no matter what.’
The King said sternly, “Atlas, no matter what happened, you shouldn’t have hit your brother. Apologize to Krish right now.”

“Sorry, Krish, Atlas said.
“Next time, if there’s an issue, work it out with words, not fists,” the King said.
“Yes, Father, Atlas replied.
“Alright, and by the way, your mother wants you to join her for afternoon tea. Head over,” the King said.
“Okay,” Atlas replied.
Krish, still hacking up blood, stared at Atlas in utter disbelief.
‘He’s just going to walk out like that?’ Krish thought, completely stunned.
