Chapter 149 He Did It For Layla
Chapter 149 He Did It For Layla
Bruce was no slouch. He was even more talented than Tomas, who was more of a strategic commander with decent combat skills, but not exactly a powerhouse.
Bruce, on the other hand, was a trooper through and through, and his combat skills were seriously impressive.
Atlas was genuinely surprised. He hadn’t expected Bruce to be this tough, but the real kicker was how seasoned the kid was in actual combat. No way this was the level of some rookie just starting college.
Kids from noble families, like Tomas, were piloting mech suits before they could even walk. Their folks would bring in private combat instructors to train them right at home.
With Krish’s help, Tomas and the rest of the Crown Squad even got to see real action on other planets, taking down savage starbeasts themselves.
They’d even get up close and personal with some of the most vicious void raiders out there. And sometimes, they’d end up in firefights with the rebels.
But as far as Atlas knew, Bruce came from some remote planet. Even if he had access to the best resources out there, it was still hard to imagine him developing such a strong combat sense.
Meanwhile, Dizzy, watching from the sidelines, had his eyes glued to November.
Bruce was practically raised by them, and his combat skills put him in the top ten at their base. But at that moment, even after using almost eighty percent of his strength, the kid still couldn’t take down November.
Dizzy thought, ‘November and Layla are married, and those two look thick as thieves.’ He knew that if Nolan ever caught wind of this, he’d totally blow a fuse.
‘He just found out he has a precious daughter, hasn’t even met her yet, and now she’s been swept away by some punk from who-knows-where?’ Dizzy thought.
‘I’m pretty ticked off, too, Dizzy admitted to himself, ‘but at least I’m keeping my head.
‘If Layla’s really into this guy, and he’s as talented as he seems, why not just bring him on board at the base? Guess I’ll play the father-in-law for Nolan and put this kid through the wringer first, Dizzy decided.
That was exactly why Dizzy had insisted they come here for a showdown.
Layla propped her chin on her hand, watching the fight unfold. She could tell Bruce wasn’t going all out, but November was holding back even more.
Bruce was already crazy strong. Layla thought that if she had to spar with her little brother, it’d probably be a tie. His attacks were just that fierce. He’d basically channeled all his talents into pure offense.
‘I know November could totally beat Bruce, Layla thought, ‘but if he really goes all out and wins, won’t that risk exposing who he really is?’
Everyone had their own thoughts swirling, and even Jayvon, who’d been standing off to the side in silence, was quietly making a firm resolve.
‘I need to get stronger,’ Jayvon told himself. ‘I’m going to become the top mech engineer in the game. That’s the only way I’ Il ever get Mom out of the Turner family.’
In the end, November barely edged Bruce out with a clutch move. Bruce was absolutely furious. November kicked Bruce’s mech suit right off the stage, and the next second, it blew up where it landed.
November had already stepped out of the mech suit’s cockpit, looking totally unfazed. “The match is over,” he said calmly. “You didn’t go all out,” Bruce called out, glaring at November. As his opponent, Bruce could tell better than anyone. November was definitely holding back.
November just shrugged. “Neither did you.”
“Man, I’m just off my game today. Next time, when I’m at my best, I’ll show you what I can really do,” Bruce shot back.
“Sure thing,” November replied.
November knew Bruce was holding back. He kept something in reserve for Layla’s sake. Honestly, November was doing the exact same thing.
‘I mean, I can’t just go and cripple Layla’s little hopher baby Newmber theright.
Successfully unlocked!
The two of them locked eyes, and for a moment, Mohd Shah, a mutual respect between rivals.
‘Maybe having him as my brother-in-law wouldn’t be so bad,’ Bruce thought.

“That was awesome. Seriously impressive. Are you two youngsters interested in working for me? I pay really well, Oren said, his shrewd eyes narrowing as he sized up Bruce and November.
Bruce replied bluntly, “I’m good on money, thanks.”
November’s cover story was that he was just a regular kid from some backwater planet, and only with Atlas’s help did he manage to get his mom over to Alpha Prime.
In that cover story, his dad was already dead. He couldn’t exactly say he wasn’t hurting for money. But working here was
not a chance.
Layla jumped in, “We’re still students, so our schedules are pretty packed. We barely get any free time.”
Oren sighed, “That’s too bad. Anyway, here’s my card. If you ever feel like it, just hit me up.”
“Alright,” Layla said.
After leaving the underground fighting arena, Jayvon and Bruce went off with Dizzy to Shadow Alley to talk about picking up some work there. Layla and November headed back to campus together.
After watching Layla and November take off in their aero-vehicle, Dizzy led the two boys back to his shop. Bruce was still buzzing from that awesome fight. He grabbed two cans of soda, tossed one to Jayvon, and cracked his open with a big grin.
Dizzy poured himself a cup of Longjing tea and drawled, “So, what do you two think of November?”
Bruce, with a mouthful of soda, half-mumbled, “He’s seriously strong, pretty much on my level. I only went easy on him for Layla. That’s the only reason he managed to win.”
Jayvon nodded. “He’s a real badass. When someone tried to mess with Layla, he handled it. Nobody could stand up to him.”
Bruce shot up in his seat. “Someone went after Layla?”
Jayvon reassured him, “November already dealt with them. And honestly, Layla’s tough, too. She didn’t get hurt or anything.”
Hearing that, Bruce let out a breath and looked relieved.
Dizzy took a slow drag from his pipe, squinting. “So, how did that punk manage to marry Layla?”
“I know all about it,” Jayvon said, laying it out for them. “Layla used to be the Sullivan family’s adopted daughter. Then the real daughter they lost was found and brought back.
“She hacked Layla’s optical computer behind her back, signed her up for the Genetic Pairing Program without her knowing. and that’s how she got paired with November.”
Both Dizzy and Bruce’s eyes darkened. “Damn the Sullivan family.”
Jayvon nodded. “Yeah, what the Sullivan family did to Layla was really out of line. Luckily, Layla managed to leave the Sullivan family and cut ties with them for good.
“Even though her marriage to November happened by accident, they actually seem to get along pretty well.”
Just then, Dizzy suddenly said, “Maybe we should bring November on board with the crew.” Bruce and Jayvon looked at each other, stunned.

Layla and November were riding in the aero-vehicle, heading for campus. But just as they were about to get there, it suddenly hit Layla. She’d totally forgotten about that Hellwing Starbeast skeleton.
She said, “I told Uncle Dizzy that if anyone comes back asking for the Hellwing Starbeast skeleton, I’ll just give it back. If you’ve already talked to Colonel Roger, he won’t go after Dizzy for it again, will he?”
“No way, November said confidently.
‘If Roger can’t even handle something this basic, I’ll just ship him off to some backwater planet to hunt void raiders, November thought.
Layla paused, looking a bit unsure, then said seriously, “Are you sure you want me to tweak and upgrade Ares?”
