Chapter 164
Chapter 164
Layla knew that in the end, it was up to Leilani to make the call.
If Leilani wanted, Atlas could bust her out of the palace’s gilded cage in no time.
Disappointment didn’t build up overnight.
But sometimes, a person’s resolve could explode all at once.
The aero-vehicle flew for about half an hour before coming to a stop. The closer they got to the Abyss, the stronger the magnetic interference became, so they had to get out and continue on foot.
Layla noticed the plants here were lush and vibrant, and every now and then, some small, harmless starbeasts would pop up.
She asked, “It’s not as safe out here as it is in the city. Why doesn’t that old lady live in the city?”
November replied, “I heard from my mom that the old lady lost her lover to the Abyss. After that, she set up a clinic nearby and started treating the locals.”
She had been running that clinic for more than fifty years now.
Layla was blown away. She said, “She must’ve really loved her partner.”
November looked at her and suddenly asked, “Layla, if I were gone one day, would you keep waiting for me?”
Layla was lost for words.
She rolled her eyes and said, “You’re so tough, even if the universe blew up, you’d probably walk away without a scratch. Besides, who knows, maybe we’ll split up before that even happens.”
Layla hadn’t forgotten; her dad was the leader of the rebels, after all.
They were just born to be on opposite sides, with so many issues they’d never see eye to eye on.
Honestly, breaking up was the only way this ended.
November’s blue eyes dimmed, and he looked a little defeated. ‘Why does my wife keep talking about splitting up?’ he thought. ‘Only thing left to do is kiss her.’
November didn’t hesitate. He leaned in and planted a kiss right at the corner of Layla’s lips.
November leaned in and planted a quick kiss on the corner of Layla’s lips. Layla realized they were out in public and nearly jumped out of her skin, freaking out that someone might catch them.
She groaned, totally exasperated. She said, “November, can you not? What if someone sees us?”
November’s pretty blue eyes instantly filled with hurt, his gaze drooping like a pitiful puppy.
November said, “But Layla, you told me to chill at school, then again on Alpha Prime, and now we’re on Meridia. Plus, there’s barely anyone around here. We’re married. Kissing you is totally my right, and honestly, it’s my job as your husband.”
Layla rolled her eyes. ‘Okay, it’s your right, but since when did that become a job requirement?’ she thought.
Just then, a group of people suddenly came walking over, and both Layla and November froze.
November awkwardly ate his words. He’d just claimed there weren’t many people around, and now a whole crowd had popped up out of nowhere.

Chapter 161
As the group passed by, they kept throwing shameless looks their way, especially at Layla, who was getting hit with some seriously brazen stares.
Honestly, Layla was just way too young and gorgeous for her own good.
November’s eyes narrowed dangerously, and he stepped forward, shielding Layla behind him.
The group shot them a few annoyed glances before finally looking away, but their voices still drifted over.
Someone said, “Quit staring. Those two might be young, but their shift tiers are no joke. Don’t go looking for trouble.
Another said, “But that girl is seriously gorgeous.”
Someone said, “Once we find the Abyss’s Holy Gate, we’ll strike it rich. You can have any woman you want then.”
The group wandered off down the path.
‘Holy Gate? What’s that supposed to mean?’ Layla thought, a little confused.
Layla tore her eyes away, noticing November was still shooting a dangerous look at the group’s backs. She squeezed his hand and said, “Let’s go find the old lady.”
Normally, November would’ve already taught those punks a lesson, but with Layla’s words, he held himself back and let his anger fade.
“Mm,” November replied.
They walked for over half an hour, and the houses out here were scattered here and there, all old and run-down; some looked like they’d barely survived a disaster.
There were hardly any people around.
Aside from a handful of locals from Meridia, there were quite a few outsiders hanging around, too; just like that bunch they saw earlier.
Finally, they stopped in front of a two-story house.
The blue-and-white house was spotless, and the yard was filled with herbs and flowers used for medicine, with a faint scent of medicine lingering in the air.
Layla blinked in surprise. ‘Whoa, didn’t think the old lady was into ancient remedies,’ she thought.
Someone called out, “November, you’re here!”
A pretty girl burst out of the little white house. She looked about seventeen or eighteen, a bit shorter than Layla, with big. bright eyes full of energy and a faint dimple at the corner of her smile.
She was coming out to greet November, but the moment she saw Layla, she stopped in her tracks and looked Layla up and down, curiosity written all over her face.
November turned to Layla and said, “This is Olivia, Ms. Gill’s great-granddaughter, Oh, and she’s Andrew’s niece, too,”
Layla nodded. ‘No wonder her features remind me a bit of Andrew,’ she thought.
Luna’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Layla, practically bouncing with excitement. She said, “You’re November’s wife, aren’t you?”
Layla coughed, feeling a little speechless.

Chapter 164
Olivia was eighteen, just a few years younger than Layla, and her enthusiasm made Layla feel a bit awkward.
But Olivia was totally sincere, grabbing Layla’s hand and saying, “Aunt, you’re so gorgeous. Honestly, you’re the prettiest person I’ve ever met.”
Before Layla could even react, Olivia had already dragged her inside, her excitement totally contagious.
November walked behind them, but he suddenly felt something off and instinctively glanced up, his eyes locking onto a certain direction.
That was the Abyss.
‘What’s happening over there?’ November thought.
Layla and the others stepped into the little white house and found Ms. Gill in her wheelchair. She was really old, her face covered in wrinkles, but her eyes were so gentle and calm, and the psychic force around her made everyone feel instantly comfortable.
“So this is Layla, right? Leilani’s told me all about you,” Evelyn said warmly.
“Hello, Ms. Gill,” Layla quickly said.
Honestly, Layla never really knew how to handle this kind of thing. Growing up, the only person who’d ever truly cared about her was Celia from the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core. She’d never had anyone else close.
Seeing Layla looking a little awkward, November sat down beside her and said, “Ms. Gill, you and Olivia are just too enthusiastic. You’re making Layla nervous.”
Evelyn sighed and said, “Wow, I haven’t even said anything yet, and you’re already jumping in to defend her? Never thought I’d live long enough to see Prince Atlas doting on his wife like this.”
November replied, righteously, “She’s my wife; why wouldn’t I spoil her?”
Layla’s cheeks burned, feeling like she might burst into flames. She shot November a glare, then turned to Evelyn and said, “Ms. Gill, don’t mind him. He’s acting a little weird today.”
“Yeah, I know. He’s been acting more like he’s in his juvenile phase and rut lately. Oh, it’s almost dinner time. Is there anything you two want to eat? I can have the housekeeping bot whip something up,” Evelyn said.
As she spoke, Evelyn shot November a meaningful look.
November replied, totally unfazed, “Anything’s fine, just something simple. I’m taking Layla over to the Abyss for a look later.”
Evelyn’s smile faltered for a moment. “You two are going to the Abyss?” she asked.
