Chapter 165
Chapter 165
Layla and November saw that Evelyn looked troubled, and they both paused, surprised.
Layla asked, “Ms. Gill, did something happen at the Abyss? Oh, and we just saw a bunch of people heading that way. They mentioned something called the Holy Gate?”
Evelyn let out a soft sigh. She said, “Indeed, many outsiders have arrived lately. Usually, they’re space hunters who go to the Abyss to hunt rare starbeasts or dig up precious ores and energy sources to sell for a fortune.
“But recently, the number of hunters has exploded. More go in, but fewer come back. Some return injured and end up here for treatment. One poor guy got attacked so badly that he turned into a vegetable. Probably got hit by a psychic force.”
Layla asked, “Ms. Gill, what exactly is the Holy Gate? If it’s so dangerous, why are so many people risking their lives for it?”
Evelyn looked down, and after a moment, she sighed and said, “They say if you find that Gate, go in, and come out, you’ll become a super shifter. The strongest shifter in the universe, someone who could destroy a whole planet in a heartbeat.”
November scoffed. He said, “Sounds like a total scam. Can’t believe so many people fall for that. Want to get stronger? Just put in the work yourself.”
As soon as he finished, everyone there gave him a long, meaningful look.
Coming from the universe’s top shifter, that was a bit of a humblebrag.
Evelyn said, “Prince Atlas is right. Just look at all those people who go in and never come back. Honestly, it’s way smarter to just train and get stronger the old-fashioned way.”
November asked, “So, Ms. Gill, does that mean we can’t even go near the Abyss anymore? The view over there is really nice, and I was thinking of taking Layla for a stroll.”
They were already here anyway. And November had a feeling that their next time here was unsure.
Layla quickly said, “Honestly, we’re really here to see you, Ms. Gill, and to ask if you could help heal my brother Nolan’s psychic force. It’s not like we have to go to the Abyss or anything.”
“Do you have his diagnostic report?” Evelyn asked.
“Yeah, I do,” Layla replied.
Layla quickly sent over Nolan’s diagnostic report to Evelyn’s optical computer.
With a casual wave, Evelyn said, “Go wander the Abyss, just don’t be like those fools and try to open the Gate. Given your strength, Prince Atlas, you’ll be fine. I’ll check on your brother’s condition while you two go look around.”
“Alright,” November replied. He nodded, then turned and led Layla out.
But November still remembered how those people had been staring at Layla earlier, and it really pissed him off. He pulled out another mask just like his from his spatial button and handed it to her.
“Layla, put this on. No need to attract any unnecessary trouble,” he said.
“Sure,” Layla replied, not really caring.
She slipped on the mask and looked around. Tons of people were out here exploring the Abyss, and everyone was dressed pretty weird anyway. With their masks on, nobody would bat an eye.
As they headed toward the Abyss, Layla asked, “November, what do you think about that Holy Gate everyone keeps talking

about? It can’t be all rumors, right? There’s gotta be something to it.”
November replied, “Yeah, there’s definitely something there, but not necessarily anything good. Layla, ever heard of Pandora’s box? They may find no treasure, but a starbeast that devours them alive. Curiosity is perilous without the power to bear its consequences.”
Layla blinked in surprise. She said, “I didn’t expect you to be so level-headed.”
Under his mask, November’s face froze for a moment. ‘Wait, did I just sound way too logical? Am I acting too much like my usual self as Prince Atlas?’ he thought.
He coughed lightly and said, “Those hunters gamble their lives, but I’m not like them. I’m married now, with a mother and family to care for. Can’t just go rushing into things anymore, you know? What do you think, Layla?”
As he spoke, he leaned in closer.
And then their masks bumped together.
November was speechless.
Layla gave him a soft, amused smile, holding back her laughter to spare November’s pride.
Honestly, the closer they got to the Abyss, the more breathtaking the scenery became.
Compared to the polished, almost unreal beauty of the main city on Meridia, this little town looked a bit rough and desolate, but the plants were lush, and all kinds of starbeasts roamed freely.
Most of the starbeasts that would attack people had already been taken care of, so the ones left were pretty much harmless.
Layla even spotted a few dragonfly starbeasts with six pairs of wings, fluttering around her.
Watching those brightly colored dragonfly starbeasts shaking their tails and showing off, November’s face turned stormy. He sent out a blast of psychic force and chased them all away.
“Scram. Who do you think you’re flirting with? That’s my mate,” November said/
Seeing November all worked up, Layla suddenly realized those dragonfly starbeasts had actually been trying to court her. She couldn’t help but find it both funny and a little ridiculous.
Layla couldn’t help but wonder, ‘Is November just way too possessive?’
His psychic force was so intense that the dragonfly starbeasts scattered in a frenzy.
Not only that, but not a single starbeast dared to get close, leaving Layla/standing in her own little bubble of emptiness.
Layla’s lips twitched in amusement. She gave November’s hand a gentle tug. “Let’s go,” she said.
November didn’t miss the chance; he immediately intertwined his fingers with hers, and hand in hand, they strolled off toward the Abyss.
Zee’s voice crackled in his earpiece. It said, “Master, you’re exactly like you are during rut, totally natural, not faking it one
bit.”
November ignored it.
If he did bother to reply, he would just tell Zee to buzz off.
Finally, they reached the Abyss’ edge. Layla had researched the StarNet before, and all the pics she’d seen showed these gorgeous pink plants with super soft leaves. When the wind blew, they looked just like a bunch of girls twirling around in

pink skirts.
Seriously, it was drop-dead gorgeous.
Of course, Layla knew those StarNet photos were probably filtered to the max, but seeing the pink grass all stomped flat in real life, she was honestly at a loss for words.
November glanced around and said, “Looks like the Holy Gate craze brought way too many people here.”
Back when folks came to the Abyss for rare plants, minerals, or starbeasts, they were at least careful not to mess up the environment too much.
But now, it was like everyone had gone totally nuts.
November frowned and said, “This place used to look amazing.”
The Abyss was famous for its legendary beauty, and with the scenery this unique, it was basically a go-to spot for couples looking for a romantic getaway every year.
November had only picked this place for Layla after seeing all those gorgeous pics online, but no one would have thought it had ended up trashed like this.
As they walked deeper in, all those pretty little starbeasts had disappeared, and the plants were trashed beyond recognition. They even started coming across space hunters who’d been hurt.
Two of them, helping each other along as they staggered out, spotted Layla and November and immediately called out, “You guys here for the Holy Gate, too? Take our advice, don’t go. There are man-eating monsters out there.”
