Sorry I'm Mated To The Commander novel Chapter 167

Chapter 167

Chapter 167

Evelyn sat on the couch, cradling an electronic bionic cat in her arms.

The bionic cat looked almost exactly like a real one, with gold and white stripes, fluffy fur, and it would purr and meow whenever you pet it.

The bionic cat narrowed its eyes and snuggled up to Evelyn, looking totally attached.

Evelyn smiled and shook her head. She said, “I’m too old. I don’t have much time left. Those parasitic bastards wouldn’t even bother taking over my body. I stay here just to be closer to him.”

‘If I stay close to where he passed away while I’m still alive, maybe when I’m gone, we’ll be closer, too, she thought.

Olivia’s eyes

welled up with tears as she listened, and they started streaming down her cheeks.

Layla felt a heavy weight in her chest, too, but she’d only just met Evelyn and didn’t really know her story; she’d only heard a little from November before.

Of course, she still hoped Evelyn would come with them.

But Layla couldn’t make the call herself, and she couldn’t talk Evelyn into it either. She had to wait until November finished his meeting.

Olivia’s eyes were red as she packed her things, the beautiful little mermaid shrouded in sorrow.

She looked at Layla, hesitantly saying, “Layla, could you try to talk Grandma into it?”

“I’ll mention it to Prince Atlas later,” Layla replied.

“Yeah,” Olivia sniffled. She said, “Her first love jumped into the abyss all those years ago. She never even got to see his body. After that, she moved here and has been waiting ever since, fifty whole years.

“Our songs can heal people, but they really drain our psychic force. She could’ve lived for decades longer, but for the past fifty years, she’s been using up so much of her psychic force just to stay here and help others.”

As she spoke, Olivia buried her face in her hands and started sobbing.

Olivia said, “But that was before. Now, monsters are coming out of the abyss. It’s so scary. Why does she still want to stay here? That man’s been gone for so long.”

Olivia had been close to Evelyn ever since she was little, and in the whole/family, she was the one who took after Evelyn the

most.

They weren’t just grandmother and granddaughter; they were also mentor and apprentice.

Layla was moved by Evelyn’s enduring love for her first love. She glanced toward the distant abyss, thinking about all those people who had been possessed by parasites. For their families and friends, it was as if their loved ones were truly gone.

‘Deep love rarely ends well, Layla thought to herself.

Maybe this place was filled with people just as lonely and devoted as Evelyn.

By the time November finished his meeting, night had fallen. The town was wrapped in the golden glow of sunset, but beneath that peaceful beauty, a hidden crisis was lurking.

The Meridia army had already arrived and locked down the area.

They started screening the residents. If you hadn’t entered the Holy Gate or come into contact with anyone who had, you were free to leave the town that very night.

Anyone who had any connection to the abyss or those who came out of it would be subject to thorough screening.

People still had no clue what would happen if those monsters took over your body. All anyone knew was that panic was spreading everywhere.

When November found Layla, he pulled her into a hug, his voice a little muffled. He said, “I’ll have to take off my mask soon. Once everyone’s here, we’re going to check out that Gate again.”

Layla’s eyes flashed with worry. She said, “Don’t go in there!”

“Relax, Layla. I won’t go in. We’re just scouting it out and figuring out how dangerous it is. After this, they’ll probably seal the place off for good,” November said.

“Yeah, so those dumb space hunters don’t go in there and get themselves killed,” Layla said.

There was no such thing as a free lunch. Those people wanted to get stronger, but ended up paying with their lives.

November kept holding Layla close. He said, “Too bad our trip’s getting cut short. And Layla, when things get serious, I need you to get out of here first.”

With so much danger lurking, November wasn’t about to let Layla get caught up in it.

“Okay,” Layla nodded and replied, but then something popped into her mind. “Oh, Ninth, Evelyn really doesn’t want to leave.”

“Andrew will be here with his crew in a few hours. I’ll have him talk to her again and see if he can change her mind,” November said.

“Sure,” Layla said.

Their trip had to end early, and neither November nor Layla wanted to say goodbye. November hugged her tightly, his fluffy tail winding around her leg, as if he couldn’t let go.

Layla was getting overheated and tried to wriggle free, but when she glanced up, she met those gorgeous blue eyes, brimming with grievance.

“Layla,” November said, sounding both pitiful and needy.

Layla laughed through her tears. She said, “When you’re done with all this mess, you can come find me at school.”

“Alright. But you have to promise me; don’t go chasing after any other foxes while I’m gone,” November said.

‘With you being this clingy, I can barely keep up; there’s no way I’d ever have the guts to get involved with another fox, Layla thought.

They hadn’t had much time to be lovey-dovey before the noise outside started up. The town was being locked down, and the screening had begun.

But for now, no stellar rangers barged into this little white house. Evelyn was held in high esteem around here, after all.

And most importantly, Atlas was here.

Even the Meridia guards didn’t dare step out of line.

November finally let go of Layla, still fussing over her with all sorts of reminders. Then he said, “Oh, and Layla, after you pick up Ms. Lowe, I’ll send out a warning to everyone around that house. They’ll have three minutes to clear out.”

Layla blinked in surprise. She asked, “You’re really going to blow it up?”

“Yeah, mom messaged me. She said I have to blow that place up, no matter what,” November replied.

Leilani was seriously pissed. She couldn’t do anything herself from afar, but even if she had to blow the house up, there was no way she would let those bastards have it.

Layla nodded, her mind still reeling from the news.

Layla suddenly couldn’t help but feel reluctant to let November go, urging him again and again not to step through that Gate. Right at that moment, Andrew showed up with his crew. He quickly checked in with Atlas, then headed straight for Evelyn.

But half an hour later, Andrew came out of the room looking pretty bummed. Layla didn’t even need to ask; she knew instantly he hadn’t managed to talk Evelyn into leaving either.

Layla’s heart just ached for her.

She couldn’t fathom what kind of deep, unwavering love could drive Evelyn to hold on like this.

In the end, Layla took Olivia, whose eyes were still red from crying, onto the aero-vehicle and headed straight for the port, with a team of stellar rangers escorting them for protection.

Olivia was still really down, and Layla wasn’t exactly great at comforting people, so she switched topics. She said, “Olivia, I heard that healing people uses up your psychic force. If you treat Nolan, will it be bad for you?”

“As long as I don’t push myself too hard and spread out the treatment so I have time to rest, it shouldn’t be a problem. But it’s not the same for Grandma. Honestly, she’s just waiting for the end,” Olivia said, looking utterly despondent.

Layla let out a quiet sigh.

She still couldn’t manage to change the subject.

It seemed like she was really not much of a comforter.

At the port, Layla met up with Ms. Lowe, and the three of them boarded Atlas’s personal starship.

Meanwhile, over at the Meridia port, tons of people were quietly boarding ships to get out. The whole abyss situation was kept strictly under wraps; only the higher-ups knew what was really going down.

They didn’t breathe a word to the general public, but on the down low, they were already hustling their families off to somewhere safe.

Layla even spotted Angelina in the crowd, with her mother and the rest of her family, waiting at the port to board a spaceship.
