Chapter 47
Chapter 47
Follow me. Atlas said, not bothering to explain.
His military boots clanged against the floor as he strode inside without looking back.
Layla’s eyes darkened as she watched him. She really wanted to just turn around and leave.
But then she remembered Atlas’s earlier threat, and she had no choice but to follow him.
I really want to see what His Highness is planning, Layla thought.
But just as they got to the door, a woman in a white dress suddenly walked up to them.
She gave Atlas a warm, knowing smile. “Atlas, you’re back?”
She had fins on her ears like a mermaid and a cascade of golden curls. Soft and stunning, her delicate features marked her as a mermaid shifter right away.
Everyone knew mermaid shifters were drop-dead gorgeous.
Leilani in the palace was a mermaid shifter, too.
Atlas’s expression tightened. “Angelina, what brings you here?”
“I happened to come with my mother for Her Majesty’s birthday party tomorrow. Oh, and this is?” Angelina said, trailing off.
Her expression stayed gentle, but Layla caught the subtle twitch of her mermaid fins.
‘She definitely doesn’t like me, Layla thought. ‘Or maybe she’s just straight-up hostile toward me. Is it because of Atlas?”
Layla maintained a neutral expression, though there was a faint discomfort simmering inside her.
But she knew better. Atlas was a prince, drop-dead gorgeous and one of the most powerful shifters out there.
Even with his mood swings and occasional scary side, girls all over Alpha Prime were head over heels for him.
Good thing I don’t love him, Layla thought.
She was still dead set on getting a divorce.
If I did, I’d be heartbroken, she thought.
Atlas glanced at Layla but didn’t bother to introduce her. “She’s just a student. Angelina, did you need something?”
Atlas wasn’t the crown prince, so living in the palace was out of the question. Instead, the King set him up with his own private estate just outside the palace.
But with Atlas always off fighting wars, he hardly ever spent time here. His lavish estate, Atlas’s own, was mostly just an empty shell.
Opulent as it was, there was always a sense of loneliness hanging in the air.
Yet, for Atlas, this was the only place that ever truly felt like home.
Her voice was gentle and unhurried. “It’s been ages since we last saw each other. I just wanted to drop by and see you.”
“We’ll see each other at my mother’s birthday party tomorrow, so,” Atlas replied.

Typical you, Angelina said with a knowing smile. Just then, her optical computer pinged with a message. She glanced at it, then looked up. “Atlas, my mom’s looking for me. Guess I’ll see you at the palace tomorrow then?”
“Sure,” Atlas replied.
Angelina flashed Layla a refined, graceful smile, then turned and walked out, hopped into her aero-vehicle, and took off.
“Let’s go, Atlas said, his voice cold.
Layla pressed her lips together, feeling a little bitter. ‘He’s always so harsh with me, but with that heiress, he’s all patient and gentle, she thought.
‘Honestly, it’s hard to believe the guy who was all soft and clingy with me during his rut is the same person standing here now, Layla mused.
“If that’s the case, why didn’t Atlas go to her during his rut?’ Layla wondered. ‘Is it because their genetic compatibility isn’t high enough?
‘Or maybe, when we went to the courthouse that day, Atlas was actually planning to divorce me for Angelina, but then his rut kicked in, and he totally lost control?’
Layla’s heart twisted with a sour ache, but she stayed silent and followed after him.
Atlas’s estate was massive, its silver-gray buildings gleaming with a cold, metallic sheen.
The robot butler, dressed in a black tuxedo, rolled up and bowed respectfully, its voice surprisingly upbeat. “Welcome back, Mr. Zimmer.”
“Set her up for iris authentication. She can access everything except the basement,” Atlas instructed.
“Sure thing. Mr. Zimmer,” the butler chirped.
Layla stared at the robot in surprise. “Your Highness, you brought me here just so I could have access to your place? What’s the point?”
Atlas shrugged off his military jacket, loosened his tie, and drawled, “Since we’re married, of course, you get access to my house, right?”
His mom told him to be good to Layla.
Atlas thought, well, giving her access to his house pretty much makes her his wife.
Anyone who wasn’t part of Atlas’s inner circle couldn’t get in. Even Angelina, who’d practically grown up with him and was super close, still had to wait outside the door.
The only one with free access was his mother, Leilani.
Layla felt a mix of emotions. She was about to say something, but Atlas just tossed out a cold “Suit yourself” and headed upstairs to his study.
He was off to handle official business.
“Mrs. Zimmer, your access is all set. Would you like me to show you around?” the butler asked.
Her gut reaction was to refuse. Since she was dead set on divorcing Atlas, she didn’t bother to get to know his house.
Besides, it was already late, and with Angelina just having left, Layla didn’t want to stay here for even a second longer.
“Just take me to His Highness,” she said.

Chapter 47
The butler piped up cheerfully, “Wow, Mr. Zimmer and Mrs. Zimmer are so inseparable, you can’t even go a minute without each other.”
Layla couldn’t help but smirk. Seriously? Atlas is such a grouch, but his robot butler is a total clown, she thought.
She sighed, “Please, don’t call me Mrs. Zimmer. Just use my name.”
“No way. Gotta keep things proper. Mrs. Zimmer, let me introduce myself. I’m Zee. The moment I met you, I knew I was a fan,” the butler said, sounding delighted.
Layla couldn’t help but think, ‘Why does Zee feel so familiar?’
“Zee, who gave you your personality?” she asked.
“Weston did. He set me up and handed me over to Mr. Zimmer. Once I was linked to him, I’m loyal to him, and only him.” Zee replied cheerfully.
‘Weston?’ Layla thought, raising an eyebrow.
Layla’s heart skipped a beat. “Is that old man named Weston Sullivan?” she blurted out.
“Whoa, Mrs. Zimmer, you’re seriously impressive. How’d you guess the old man’s name is Weston?” Zee chirped.
Layla fell silent, totally caught off guard. ‘No way, Weston actually knows Atlas?’ she thought.
She knew Weston’s personality inside out. If he didn’t really like or admire Atlas, there was no way he’d ever give him a gift.
‘So, how did Weston and Atlas even meet?’ Layla wondered. ‘What’s their relationship, anyway? Guess I’ll just have to ask Weston next time I talk to him.’
Layla didn’t want to reveal that she’d trained with Weston on mech suits, so it wasn’t a good idea to bring it up with Atlas right now.
She walked up to the study door and knocked, but no one answered for quite a while.
Zee’s electronic eyes blinked. “Mrs. Zimmer, Atlas is probably busy with a video call right now, handling work stuff. Why not take a break somewhere? Are you hungry? I whip up some seriously tasty snacks.”
Maybe it was because Zee was designed by Weston, but Layla couldn’t help but feel a bit fond of Zee. She nodded and followed it into the small lounge next door.
Zee added enthusiastically, “Once Mr. Zimmer wraps up his call, I’ll know right away and let you know. Just hang out here
for now.”
“Okay,” Layla replied.
Layla settled into the comfy sofa and shot a quick message to Weston.
But, of course, Weston didn’t reply right away. ‘He’s probably off wandering who knows where, with zero signal as usual, Layla thought.
Layla didn’t even bat an eye. She pulled out the watch-shaped optical computer Weston had given her and started messing with it again.
After she cracked a few passwords, the device finally unlocked with a soft click.
Layla thought it was just another new computer from Weston, but as soon as she finished registering, a gentle voice chimed
from inside.
