Chapter 59

Chapter 59

Layla’s lips twitched. “Is this supposed to be fun? You can’t just back out. Either the genetic match fails, and the application gets voided automatically, or you have to hunt down your intended and negotiate a breakup.”

Annie blinked her eyes. “If the match fails, doesn’t that mean I’m not good enough for anyone?”

Layla was speechless.

‘Why is her focus so bizarre?’ Layla thought.

Layla thought about her own troubles and sighed. “Trust me, as someone who’s been there, you should be praying for the match to fail.”

“Is it really that bad? Who knows, maybe I’ll get matched with an adorable guy of boyfriend,” Annie said, eyes sparkling.

Layla just let Annie have her optimism.

‘But hey, maybe not everyone ends up as unlucky as her, getting paired with someone who drives you up the wall,’ she wondered.

With the school shut down, students were basically confined to campus.

The school forum was buzzing with activity.

Everyone was talking about the rebels, and after Atlas rolled in with a bunch of stellar rangers looking for Layla, the rumor mill went into overdrive. Some people were even saying Layla was one of the rebels.

So when Layla and Annie headed to the cafeteria, some students kept glancing their way, whispering and gossiping under their breath.

Layla ignored them completely, but Annie’s fiery temper was flaring. She was clearly getting pissed off.

“Why are you staring? If you’ve got something to say, spit it out. Or we can settle this on the Mech Combat Arena,” Annie snapped.

Most of them looked away, but a group strode right over and took the table next to Layla and Annie.

And it was actually the Crown Squad.

Ever since they lost to Layla’s team at the Training Delta military base, the Crown Squad had kept their heads down for a while.

Tomas had always been the prodigy, top of the class at everything, no matter what.

Honestly, except for the ridiculously talented Atlas, nobody had ever managed to beat him.

But now, Layla had burst onto the scene.

But Tomas wasn’t the kind of guy to get cocky. After a real heart-to-heart with Krish, he realized that having a formidable opponent like Layla could actually help him grow.

Besides, Krish had a thing for talented people, and he was definitely interested in recruiting Layla.

Honestly, Tomas really respected Layla. If they could become friends, team up, and level up together, that would be pretty

awesome.

“People are spouting nonsense about you online. Maybe you should set the record straight,” Tomas suddenly said.

Chapter 59

Layla froze for a moment, glancing up at him, unsure if he was actually talking to her.

Annie, on the other hand, was already up to speed on all the gossip floating around the school forum.

She leaned in and whispered, “Layla, it’s just those idiots on the forum spreading rumors about you being connected to the rebels. Seriously, how dumb can they be?

“Do they think the teachers and the principal are total morons? If you were actually in trouble, would you really be sitting here eating like nothing happened?”

Layla let out a soft laugh. “Why waste my time explaining myself to people who don’t even matter? I didn’t do anything, so why bother?”

“Yeah, you’re right,” Annie agreed.

Since Layla had kind of brushed off Tomas, Chaim, sitting next to him, shot her a look. “Layla, so you think you’re hot stuff now just because you won the training comp? Now you’re too good to talk to Tomas?”

“Chaim, just eat,” Tomas cut in, not bothering to look up.

Layla just glanced down, saying nothing.

After that, nobody said a word. When they finally finished eating and left the cafeteria, Annie let out a long sigh. “I was honestly worried you guys were about to throw down.”

Layla just shrugged and smiled wryly. Fighting never fazed her.

Whether it was a straight-up showdown or someone pulling shady moves behind her back like Xanthe, Layla couldn’t care less.

She’d just give it right back when the time came.

Whatever came at her, she would deal with it, no sweat.

After parting ways with Annie, Layla went back to her dorm and logged onto the mech suit forum again.

There were some messages from Shayla from last time, so Layla responded to each in turn.

After she finished everything, Layla suddenly saw that someone had sent a friend request to Hades.

Which was super weird, since Hades’s account was set so nobody could add him as a friend.

‘So how did this person even get through?’ Layla thought to herself.

Layla was about to just ignore it, but when she caught sight of the screen name, she stopped cold.

It was November.

That was the handle Atlas used back when he was in rut. Layla’s eyes widened in surprise.

Then again, maybe it was just someone else with the same name.

Either way, Layla didn’t even think twice, and she hit reject on that friend request without a second thought.

Right now, Layla wanted nothing to do with Atlas; she’d steer clear even if it was just some rando with the same username. No way was she getting anywhere near that mess.

Atlas had just gotten back to his place after a shower, his silver-gray loungewear hanging loose, showing off his tanned skin.

His hair was still wet, droplets falling onto the carpet below.

Zee grumbled, “Mr. Zimmer, Hades just came online, but he shot down your friend request.”

“Send it again,” Atlas said, not missing a beat.

“Yes, sir,” Zee replied.

After rejecting the friend request, Layla updated her account privacy settings.

Once she was sure no strangers could add her, she finally turned her attention to other things.

But then, that weird friend request popped up again.

Layla narrowed her eyes and had Zaa drop in a quick tracking program, trying to hunt down the signal from November.

Zee didn’t miss a beat, instantly logging out at warp speed.

It was totally freaked out. “They almost tracked our IP address, scared me half to death.”

Atlas snorted, “Seriously, you’re hopeless.”

Zee complained, almost in tears, “Mr. Zimmer, it’s not my fault. The other guy is just way too good. He’s a mech engineer, tracking signals is like child’s play for him, he could do it with his eyes closed.”

All those legendary mech engineers with big reputations and high status, they each have their own vibe, and most are pretty quirky.

Some of them even have weird habits, like Poseidon, Weston.

Hades had been the hottest name in the mech scene these past few years, but he was like a phantom, showing up out of nowhere and vanishing just as fast. Good luck ever getting him to show up.

Nobody even had a clue if Hades is male or female, old or young.

But just recently, Hades came back with a bang, selling two blueprints and shaking up the whole community.

Atlas was thinking, ‘Maybe I can get Hades on board.’

Actually, that lightweight mech suit design, ideal for a female pilot, was the one Atlas managed to get his hands on.

The whole reason Atlas wanted to reach out to Hades was simple. He hoped Hades could actually bring that blueprint to life.

He wanted to give it to Layla.

‘Seriously, why is Hades so impossible to contact?’ Atlas thought, getting a little annoyed.

Just then, Zee suddenly lit up. “Mr. Zimmer, I just saw a post from a mech suit teacher at Imperial Academy. She said Hades is awesome and helped her solve a major problem. Looks like she’s pretty tight with Hades.”

“Alright, dig up her info,” Atlas said.

“Yes, sir,” Zee replied.

Layla didn’t manage to track them down, but honestly, she didn’t really mind.

She knew there was always someone out there who was on another level.

Anyone who could bust through her account’s firewall had to be seriously skilled.

Just then, she got a message from Celia, asking if she wanted to come back during the break.

Layla: [Of course I’ll come back. I want to spend the New Year with you guys.]

Celia: [That’s wonderful. The kids will be so happy to see you.]

Just as Layla was chatting with Celia about coming home for the New Year, a new message popped up.

Atlas: [Send me your measurements, height, waist, everything. I’m getting you a custom gown.]

Layla: [Your Highness, I don’t want to get married.]
