Chapter 69
Chapter 69
Chaim stood off to the side, lips curled in a mocking grin. “Why not? Layla’s strong, sure, she can fight, but when it comes to real hands-on skills, she’s probably not that great.
“This is where her flaws show. Still, her shift tier is high enough that with some extra points, she might just squeeze into Class S.”
Jayvon was still pretty salty about Layla kicking him out last time.
But watching Chaim act all smug now made him even more annoyed.
Jayvon hated these spoiled rich kids who thought they were hot stuff but didn’t have the brains to back it up.
Jayvon shot Chaim a look like he was an idiot. “Just a friendly tip. Don’t ever underestimate Layla.”
“Come on, we’re not friends. Face it. Layla didn’t score better than me this time. That’s just the truth,” Chaim scoffed.
Jayvon just shook his head.
‘He’s not even that strong, but his ego is off the charts, Jayvon thought.
‘Just wait, Chaim. Layla’s going to give you a shock soon,’ Jayvon smirked to himself.
Honestly, Jayvon thought those questions were so simple. Even he and Chaim could get them right.
‘Layla would have no problem with those at all,’ Jayvon thought.
Shayla had always had high hopes for Layla, but now she was watching the clock, starting to get worried, too.
More and more students were finishing their exams.
From the stats, most of the A Tier and above students had already wrapped up the second practical section.
“This doesn’t make sense, Shayla thought.
From what Shayla knew about Layla, even if she was stuck on the question, she shouldn’t be taking this long.
With just one minute left on the clock, Layla finally finished her exam.
When she logged out of the virtual exam room, she looked like she’d just been pulled out of a pool.
Sweat was pouring down her forehead, and it was obvious she’d used up a ton of psychic force.
Chaim’s eyes lit up when he saw her. He never missed a chance to throw shade at Layla.
He smirked, “Layla, did you have someone else take your exams for you before? You’re supposed to be an S Tier shifter, but look at you, struggling so hard with a simple A Tier mech suit practical?”
Jayvon didn’t say a word, but his eyes basically said, ‘Seriously? What’s up with that?’
Layla frowned slightly.
‘Chaim only drew an A Tier practical task?’ Layla thought. ‘So how did I end up drawing an Ultra-S Tier question?’
Shayla couldn’t hide the disappointment in her eyes as she looked at Layla.
‘How could my top pick be the last one out?’ Shayla thought, feeling a bit bummed..

Chapter 69
After all, speed was part of the assessment too.
Even if Layla nailed the practical, she’d still lose points for taking so long.
“Alright, your scores have all been sent to the school’s Prime AI. Once the grading is done, your results and rankings will be sent straight to your optical computers,” Shayla announced.
As soon as the bell rang, the students cheered and started filing out of the classroom.
Before leaving, Chaim deliberately bumped into Layla’s desk. “Hey, Wastelands-9 girl, just getting into Imperial Academy is already more than you deserve.
“Don’t think you can just rise to the top overnight. People like you will never reach the top. Honestly, some of you should just quit the Mech Engineering Division and go be a trooper instead.”
There were still a few students left in the classroom, some of them from Wastelands-9, and they all looked pretty upset.
But Layla didn’t say a word.
Chaim strutted out of the classroom, looking smug as ever. He couldn’t wait to show off to his Crown Squad buddies and rub
it in.
‘Finally, I beat Layla. That’s payback for the humiliation she gave me back in training,’ Chaim thought, feeling a rush of satisfaction.
After Chaim left, one of the Wastelands-9 students, still fuming, turned to Layla. “Layla, are you just going to let him walk all over you? He totally humiliated you, and you didn’t even fight back.”
Layla didn’t get angry. She calmly packed up her things and asked, “Did Ms. Mcgrath announce Chaim as the top scorer?”
“Not yet,” the student muttered.
“So what’s everyone so worked up about? Just because someone finishes first doesn’t mean they’re number one. And finishing last doesn’t mean you’re at the bottom,” Layla replied coolly.
With that, Layla stood up and left the classroom.
Finishing time was part of the final score.
Once Layla realized Chaim’s mech suit task was just A Tier, she figured the scores for different tiers must be weighted differently.
Layla knew she’d taken longer than most, but she still had no clue how the scores were actually calculated for each tier.
Meanwhile, Shayla walked into the Mech Engineering Division office, intending to check the final results from the Prime Al.
There were already a bunch of the Mech Engineering Division teachers gathered inside, all waiting for the outcome.
Once the ten Class S students were confirmed, they’d start planning out special courses just for them.
This was all part of getting prepped for the Four-academy League Tournament coming up in the fall.
“Chaim really is the top dog. He totally nailed the practical and finished faster than anyone else. No way anyone’s beating him for first place. What do you say, Shayla?” a voice sounded.
The one talking was Andorra, Shayla’s longtime rival.
Back when they were students, Andorra had chased after Shayla relentlessly, but she shot him down every time, leaving him nursing a grudge.

Chapter 69
After they both stafted teaching at Imperial Academy, Andorra kept trying to outdo Shayla, always hoping she’d finally admit he was better.
Last year, he came out on top, so he got to lead Class S as their advisor.
It was still up in the air who would get to be the advisor for Class S this year.
Shayla just ignored him. The more one responded, the more fired up he got.
But today was different. Andorra sidled up next to Shayla, watching the virtual screen with her as the students’ scores popped up one by one.
He kept up his snarky tone. “Weren’t you always hyping up that Layla? What happened? Did she not do so well this time? Wasn’t she the last one out?”
All the other teachers started chiming in. “If she was the last one to finish, there’s no way her score is anywhere near the top.”
“She might not even crack the top ten, huh? Isn’t she supposed to be some kind of powerhouse? If she can’t get into Class S, maybe she’ll just transfer to the Trooper Division.”
“Switching to the Trooper Division won’t help her get into Class S either.”
As they kept talking, Shayla’s face turned frosty, her indifference plain for all to see.
Meanwhile, the system was still running the results, and with over two-thirds of the scores in, Chaim was leading by a mile.
Every time a new score popped up, the rankings shuffled a bit, but Chaim had been locked in at number one ever since his score was posted.
It looked like nobody could shake his spot at the top.
Andorra’s grin grew even wider. There was nothing he loved more than seeing Shayla get put in her place.
And then, when it was finally time for the last score to be revealed, Layla’s name suddenly rocketed up the leaderboard.
She shot straight past a bunch of other students, bumping everyone else down the list.
And she was still climbing, her name kept going higher and higher.
