Chapter 70
Chapter 70
In the end, Layla’s name squeezed Chaim out of first place and claimed the top spot.
“No way,” Andorra blurted out, her jaw dropping as she stared in disbelief.
Shayla was over the moon, but she kept her composure. She quickly typed in her credentials and brought up the footage of Layla’s exam.
She nailed all two hundred multiple-choice questions and scored full marks.
Plus, the timestamp showed that Layla finished her 200 questions before Chaim was even done with his.
On top of that, Chaim actually got five of his multiple-choice questions wrong.
But that wasn’t even the end of it. The next moment, all the teachers watched in disbelief as Layla actually unlocked the hidden Ultra-S Tier virtual test questions.
Shayla was so shocked that she could barely speak. She muttered, “No wonder it took her so long.”
One of the teachers next to her blurted out, “It’s not about how long it took. These are problems even we can’t solve, and she actually cracked them.”
As for Andorra, her face was burning with embarrassment, so she just kept her mouth shut.
The rest of the teachers stopped talking, totally focused on the virtual screen, watching the way Layla tackled the problems and handled the experiment.
When Antony, the dean, walked in, he saw a dozen mech instructors, all silent, eyes glued to the screen as a student worked on an experiment.
Antony raised an eyebrow. “What are you all doing?”
“Shh,” Everyone shushed him at once.
Antony’s mouth twitched. ‘Was this a mutiny? Since when did the mech instructors dare to shush me together?’ he thought.
While the Mech Engineering Division instructors were totally absorbed in watching Layla’s exam footage, Layla was already getting a message from November.
It must have been sent before his exam started.
November: [Layla, my exam’s going to take a while. Once you’re done, come check on me, okay?]
And then, just to be extra, he sent a GIF of a nine-tailed fox swishing its tails playfully.
Layla just stared at her screen, deadpan. She was this close to blocking him for his shameless cuteness attack.
Atlas was a real menace when he was clear-headed, but during his rut, he was just ridiculously adorable.
Layla: [Okay.]
Layla was actually itching to check out the S Tier command selection.
Out of the three main professions, command was hands-down the most important role.
Commanders needed big-picture thinking, top-notch coordination skills, and lightning-fast reflexes.

And on top of all that, they needed a seriously strong psychic force.
Layla had heard that commanders with powerful psychic force could even tamper with someone’s mind. She’d always suspected Atlas had secretly used that ability on her at some point.
Otherwise, she couldn’t explain why she still hadn’t managed to get a divorce.
When Layla walked into the main lecture hall of the Command Division, she spotted Chaim and the other three Crown Squad members. No surprise, they were obviously waiting for Tomas.
Chaim, thinking he finally had a chance to show off, lifted his chin and said with a smug grin, “Layla, just you wait.
“You’re not as good as me, and your husband is never going to beat Tomas. You only got first place in the training because you got insanely lucky; it was just a fluke.”
Layla shot back, “So you want to compare me to you, and my husband to Tomas? Wait, is Tomas your husband now or something?”
Someone nearby just couldn’t hold it in and cracked up.
Chaim shot a glare around, but with so many people, he couldn’t figure out who had laughed.
Romeo, never one to shut up. piped up right away. “Layla, if you can’t even beat Chaim, stop making a fool of yourself here.
“Honestly, you should just switch to the Trooper Division. I can’t wait to have a real showdown with you over there.”
He smirked, “You’re a mech engineer, so it wouldn’t even be fair to fight you. I heard you took on five people and won.
“Those guys must’ve sucked hard. If they were that bad, I could probably wipe the floor with ten of them solo.”
“Don’t just stand there all quiet. What, you chickening out? Getting scared stiff?” Romeo teased.
After Romeo finished running his mouth, Layla finally spoke up, her tone cool and confident. “Chaim didn’t beat my score. If you don’t believe it, go ask the teachers yourself.”
Romeo was left speechless, totally thrown off.
Chaim instantly blew up. “No way. That’s impossible. I was the first one to finish, you were the last, how could I possibly have done worse than you?”
“If you don’t believe it, go ask the teachers. What? Are you slow or something?” Layla shot back.
Layla was so calm and confident that Chaim actually started to doubt himself. He pulled out his optical computer and sent a voice call to Andorra, making no effort to keep it private.
He even opened the virtual screen for everyone to see.
“Mr. Rich, the Mech Engineering Division exam results are out, right? Did I get first place?” Chaim asked, trying to sound confident.
“No,” Andorra replied flatly.
The whole place went dead silent, even quieter than the Command Division exam room just a wall away.
Chaim looked like he’d been hit by a truck, mouth half open, completely clueless about what to say. His face was on fire.
Romeo couldn’t stand seeing his teammate get wrecked, so he jumped in to help out. “Hey, who cares about first place? As long as you scored better than Layla, that’s what really matters.”
Chapter 70
Chaim mulled it over and figured Romeo had a point. All he needed was to beat Layla. Everyone else didn’t matter to him
anymore.
Those guys probably just got lucky, that’s all, Chaim told himself, trying to feel better.
Then, Andorra’s voice came from the virtual screen for everyone to hear. “Layla is number one.”
“No way, Chaim blurted out, his voice cracking with disbelief.
Getting crushed by Layla again, Chaim felt like he’d just been struck by lightning. He couldn’t accept it, so he spun around and bolted straight for the Mech Engineering Division teachers’ office.
There’s no way this is real. It has to be a mistake, Chaim thought, his mind racing. ‘Layla was the last one to finish the exam. How could she possibly be number one?’
Layla just stood there, totally unfazed by the news.
‘So the harder the experiment, the higher the score, huh?” Layla mused. That Ultra-S Tier mech problem was actually kind of awesome. Maybe I can shave off some time if I run through it again later.
Just then, the exam room door opened, and a student from the Command Division stepped out.
November, all fluffy and white, barreled straight into Layla’s arms. “Layla, I’m done. I’m starving. let’s go eat at the cafeteria.”
“I just remembered I need to work on an experiment, so I’ll have to grab my food to-go and eat in the dorm.” Layla said.
“Works for me. As long as I get to eat with you, anywhere is fine.” November replied, his eyes sparkling.
The two of them kept chatting as they strolled away together.
Everyone around them, including the three remaining Crown Squad members, just watched the sweet couple with jealousy.
One girl even clasped her cheeks and gushed, “Being married looks so sweet.
“You get to go to class together, hit up the cafeteria together, do experiments together, and someday, you could even fight side by side. That’s just epic.”
Her friend snarked, “Girl, you need a boyfriend first.”
While the other students were busy chatting, the three remaining Crown Squad members were all anxiously watching the exam room door.
Romeo, sounding uncertain, said, “Finishing first doesn’t mean you’re actually first, you know? Just look at Chaim.”
Kierra and Wayne just gave him a look, speechless.
Why didn’t you say that when Chaim was here?’ they both thought.
Layla was itching to beat her own time on that Ultra-S Tier mech problem, so she told November to grab her lunch from the cafeteria while she hustled back to her dorm’s mech suit station to get some extra practice in.
But the mech suit station in her dorm was so basic, it could only handle simple component work, no way to run full
simulations.
“Zaa, did you copy that virtual console I asked for earlier?” Layla asked.
“Copied. But there’s a firewall messing with the install. Give me a little time, Layla, I’ll break through it,” Zaa replied.
“Okay,” Layla answered.

Chapter 70
Layla went into the bathroom, intending to wash her face with cold water, but when she looked in the mirror, she noticed barely visible red marks on her neck, just above her collar.
Her eyes instantly turned cold.
