Chapter 71
Chapter 71
Layla started checking herself.
What’s wrong with me? When did I get so comfortable being around November all the time? Layla wondered Did 1 seriously forget that Atlas asked me here just to talk about breaking up?”
If November’s rut hadn’t come out of the blue, they probably would’ve split up already.
‘I really need to keep it together,’ Layla told herself. ‘Sure, he was November. But he was also Atlas.
At Imperial Academy’s Everdom Commons, November showed up and ordered eight dishes; every single one was Layla’s favorite.
But with the crowd, he had no choice but to wait.
November sat there, doing his best to keep his temper in check.
Meanwhile, Layla heard the doorbell and found it odd. November had the key to her dorm; he could just scan his optical computer and walk right in. ‘Why would he even ring the bell?’ she wondered.
She walked over and opened the door, only to see Xanthe standing there, tears streaming down her face, looking absolutely pitiful.
“Layla, Caleb doesn’t want me anymore. He’s not going to marry me. Please, can you talk to Caleb for me? Make him marry me, okay?” Xanthe pleaded.
Layla didn’t even blink. She just closed the door right in Xanthe’s face.
‘I used to think Xanthe had at least some brains, but now it’s clear she’s totally clueless, Layla thought. ‘Her thought process is just a straight line, completely flat.
‘Whether Caleb marries Xanthe or not, what does that have to do with me? Seriously, does Xanthe have amnesia or something? Wasn’t she the one who went out of her way to snatch Caleb from me in the first place?’
Truth was, the James family wasn’t really happy with Xanthe from the start, which was why they kept pushing back the wedding, saying they’d wait until she finished the entrance exam for Imperial Academy.
But then they found out her grades were terrible, she kept failing all her practice tests, even when working on them by
herself.
With the exam coming up soon, it was pretty obvious she probably wouldn’t even pass the entrance exam for Imperial Academy.
Meanwhile, word spread that Layla had gotten into some drama, and both Krish and Atlas stepped up for her.
Pretty soon, everyone realized Layla was just way out of their league. Both Krish and Atlas wanted to win her over.
The James family had sided with Krish, but they didn’t have much influence, and none of their kids were good enough to get into the Crown Squad, so Krish never really bothered with them.
But now that Krish was paying attention to Layla, and Karter even called Layla back home for a family talk, the James family huddled up and decided to ditch Xanthe and try to marry Layla instead.
When Xanthe heard the news, she was completely dumbfounded, and Harper was so upset she cried herself breathless and actually passed out.
Chapter 71
“This is just too much. They were already planning the wedding, and the two of them had even gone through their ruts together. How could they just change everything like that?’ Harper fumed.
But nobody knew what the James family said to Karter, but somehow, he actually gave his consent.
Xanthe went to find Caleb, but he completely ghosted her; no replies to her messages, no calls, just straight-up ignoring her.
With nowhere else to go, she had no choice but to go find Layla.
“Layla, please, I’m begging you. Come back to the Sullivan family and be the heiress with me. You can have half of my parents’ and brother’s love. Anything but Caleb, I’ll share with you.” Xanthe pleaded.
Layla just shut the door in her face, not even sparing her a glance. Right then, Zaa notified her that the virtual lab was ready, so Layla logged in and started her experiments.
If November came back, Zaa would let her know.
Xanthe crouched outside Layla’s dorm, sobbing pitifully until her voice was completely hoarse. Feeling totally sorry for herself, she hugged her knees and curled up.
After a while, Xanthe suddenly spotted a pair of combat boots in front of her. Her face lit up with hope, and when she looked up, she realized it was November, Layla’s husband, standing right there.
Xanthe’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
November, meanwhile, thought Xanthe was a total nuisance and was tempted to just boot her out of the way. But since this was Layla’s place, he decided not to fight.
Xanthe stood up excitedly. “You’re Layla’s husband, right?”
“That’s right.” November puffed out his chest, standing tall.
Xanthe spoke as if grabbing her last lifeline, her voice shaking. “The James family wants Caleb to marry Layla. Did you
know?
“You two aren’t divorced yet, are you? There’s no way you’d just let Layla marry someone else. You’re definitely going to stop this, right?”
November had been ready to just boot this annoying woman aside.
But when he heard what Xanthe said, his eyes narrowed dangerously, a wave of psychic force flooding the hallway.
He said coldly, “Caleb’s going to marry Layla?”
“Yeah. The Sullivan and James families have already agreed on everything. Even if you and Layla don’t want it, there’s no way you two can fight the Sullivan family and the Jamese family,” Xanthe blurted out.
With a sharp snap, November broke the doorknob clean off. He glanced down at it, then strode inside like nothing had happened.
Xanthe was left standing there, totally stunned.
‘What’s with this guy? Isn’t he supposed to care about Layla? He looked seriously mad just now, Xanthe thought. ‘But then he just walked in like nothing had happened? All talk, no action.
Meanwhile, November walked in and set the takeout on the coffee table.
“Layla, the meal is ready,” he called out.

Okay,” Layla replied.
She logged out of the virtual lab and glanced at the food on the table. “Want to eat together?” she asked.
“Nah, someone just needed me for something. I’ll be back in a bit. You go ahead and eat, November said.
Layla just nodded, not giving it much thought. November might’ve been in his rut, but guys like Roger were in the loop, so she figured he probably had some work stuff to deal with.
But the moment November stepped out of Layla’s dorm, his eyes went cold, and his S Tier shifter aura flooded the whole hallway. One could practically feel the air buzzing with his presence.
Xanthe and the other low-tier shifters were totally paralyzed, legs weak, not daring to even breathe.
Once November was out of sight, they finally started to relax a little.
Xanthe was so freaked out she almost fainted, and it took her a while to recover.
Xanthe suddenly thought to herself, ‘Is November this pissed off because he and Layla just had a fight?
‘If Layla actually gives a damn about him, or if November just flat-out refuses to split up, then there’s nothing the Sullivan family or the Jamese family could do about it, right?’
Xanthe was just starting to relax when she suddenly realized something was off.
‘Wait, isn’t November heading straight for Caleb’s dorm?’ Xanthe thought, her heart skipping a beat.
She wasn’t imagining it. November was definitely making a beeline for Caleb’s place.
Normally, Atlas was chill as ice, always cool, always sizing things up, and never letting his feelings run wild.
But now, with Atlas’s rut raging, all logic was out the window.
‘Try to steal my girl, and I’d wipe out your whole family, no hesitation,’ November wondered.
Xanthe was still in shock when one of the other students, who’d also been crushed by November’s psychic force, finally managed to speak, voice trembling.
“That was terrifying. He’s definitely an S Tier shifter. Is he looking to throw down with someone?” he said.
Xanthe’s heart skipped a beat. “Wait, you mean he’s actually going to fight someone?”
“Of course. Haven’t you heard? When a shifter starts leaking psychic force like that, it means they’re pissed and itching for a brawl.
“Damn, whoever ticked off a big shot like him must’ve done something crazy. What, tried to steal his girl or something?” the
student said.
