Chapter 72
Chapter 72
Xanthe’s face went pale, her legs buckled, and she sank straight to the floor.
Xanthe was left completely dumbstruck.
She just wanted November to keep Layla from marrying Caleb.
But she never meant for November to go beat Caleb up.
‘As for who will win between Caleb and November, come on, does anyone even need to ask? she wondered.
After all, November had already knocked Caleb around before. He’s got plenty of experience in that department.
Caleb had no idea that disaster was about to come crashing down on him.
He’d just finished the trooper Class S exam, and he’d done pretty well; he might even make it into the top ten.
If he got into Class S and then married Layla, Krish would definitely put him to good use in the future.
As for Xanthe, Caleb couldn’t help but feel bad for her. She’d helped him get through his ruts time and again, and he was honestly hooked on that subtle, clean scent of lily she had.
Still, there was no way he could defy his folks.
All he could do was find a way to make it up to Xanthe later.
Right then, there was a sudden knock at the dorm door. Caleb figured Leon would get it, so he didn’t bother to move.
The very next moment, he heard Leon let out a blood-curdling scream.
Caleb’s heart skipped a beat. He jumped up and made it to the door, only to have someone grab him by the collar before he could even step outside.
November looked stone cold, his eyes even chillier than the mask covering his face.
“I heard you’re trying to steal my wife?” November said, his voice icy.
Caleb had been beaten up by November before, so just seeing November now made him shrink back without thinking. That was just the pecking order among shifters.
And to make matters worse, November had already tossed Leon straight out the door, slamming him into a tree, where he was now groaning in agony.
Caleb’s lips twitched as the memory of his last beatdown came rushing back.
He pressed his lips together, trying to sound tough, but his voice was shaky. “It wasn’t up to me. It’s a family thing, between the Sullivan family and the Jamese family.”
“Seriously, I don’t give a damn who decided it. Anyone who tries to take my wife is asking for trouble,” November snapped.
This time, November didn’t even bother with a duel; he just socked Caleb right in the face.
Caleb’s front tooth went flying in an instant.
There were other James family kids and relatives hanging around, so when they saw Caleb get decked, they all jumped in without hesitation.

Chapter 72
A few minutes later, Caleb and the rest of them were all lying on the floor, faces battered and bruised.
November wasn’t finished yet. He flexed his wrist, then strode out the door, ready for round two.
‘Duke Karter and Duke Hector? Those two old men are next on my list, November thought, eyes cold.
“Trying to marry off my Layla to someone else? If I don’t beat some sense into them, they’ll never learn their lesson, November seethed.
This whole mess went even more viral than when Layla soloed five guys at once,
The school administration jumped in right away, but when Davis heard about it, he found himself lost in thought.
He suddenly felt a wave of sympathy for Karter and Hector. ‘Of all the wives to steal, why would you go after Atlas’s girl?” Davis thought.
Layla was totally oblivious to all the drama going down. After she finished eating, there was so much food, she set some aside for November, and she went straight back to the virtual lab to dig into today’s challenge.
At last, Layla managed to shave a good chunk off her practice time, way better than she did on the actual test.
Just as she stepped out of the virtual lab, her holophone lit up with a call from Annic.
“Layla, you seriously haven’t heard? Your husband is surprisingly fierce. He totally wrecked Caleb and a whole bunch of guys who tried to back him up, like, a dozen people.
“They’re still whining in the infirmary,” Annie blurted out.
Layla blinked in surprise. “November went after Caleb again?”
Annie nodded hard. “Yeah, seriously, you didn’t hear? I heard November say, ‘Anyone who tries to steal my wife gets a beating. Maybe Caleb tried to win you back and pissed November off?
“Can’t really blame November for getting mad. What’s up with Caleb, anyway? Can’t he just stay with Xanthe? Jumping from one girl to another, doesn’t he worry about pulling something?”
Layla was stunned for a moment, then suddenly remembered seeing Xanthe crouching by the door earlier.
‘Xanthe must’ve said something to November, Layla guessed.
After hanging up with Annie, Layla shot November a message, asking where he was.
November didn’t reply for ages, and Layla started to feel a little uneasy.
Normally, when he was in rut, November would stick to her like glue; he couldn’t stand being apart for even a second. Plus, he’d promised to have dinner with her earlier.
But now the food was cold, and he still hadn’t come back.
And he wasn’t even replying to her messages.
Layla realized, a bit belatedly, that she’d been worrying about November a bit too much lately. It was probably because they’d just gotten through his rut, and the lingering pull of their pheromones was still affecting them both.
So Layla hopped onto the mech forum, ready to talk shop with her online mech buddies and take her mind off things.
But then she noticed that a friend request was popping up again.
Yep, it was from November.

This time, there was a note attached: [Hey Hades, hope you’ll accept. I want to commission a mech suit for my wife. Price is no issue.]
Layla’s finger hovered over the reject button, hesitating for a moment.
This message was sent a few days ago. If it really was Atlas, then he’d been totally clear-headed, not caught up in a rut or anything.
Layla’s heart suddenly started pounding.
‘If Atlas wants to make me a mech suit when he’s not in rut, maybe he actually cares about me. Maybe I’m not just some pawn to him,’ Layla thought.
Layla glanced back at the friend request.
Then, she hit accept.
‘Let’s see what happens,’ Layla thought. After all, she knew she’d fallen for Atlas the moment she met him.
If Atlas weren’t a prince, there was no way she’d ever agree to the divorce.
But after she hit accept, nothing happened; November was still showing offline.
Layla just let it go and hopped over to the trading platform, browsing for some mech parts that offered the best bang for her buck.
Time ticked by.
Layla checked the mech forum, but the user named November was still offline.
And the real November still hadn’t replied to her messages.
Layla’s heart sank.
When November was in rut, he was nothing like his usual self. Before he met Layla, he’d always just lock himself away in his own place during this time.
But after meeting Layla, he just wanted to cling to her, never wanting to leave her side.
‘Could something have happened to November?’ Layla thought, worry gnawing at her.
Layla decided to call Roger. He was Atlas’s adjutant, so he’d definitely know where November was.
But before she could make the call, her phone rang. To her surprise, it was Nolan.
“Nolan, what’s up?” Layla asked.
“Layla, Dad got beaten up. He’s pretty badly hurt. They’ve already taken him to the hospital. And the guy who did it said he’s
