For those who had already gotten through their rut, even the tiniest whiff of pheromones was enough to bring back every detail of those wild days.
Atlas’s eyes flashed with anger, his gaze locked on Layla’s lips, then, without warning, he kissed her hard.
The instant their lips met, the scents of cedar and roses intertwined in the air.
They both stiffened.
Layla’s eyes widened in shock. For a split second, she felt like the person in front of her wasn’t Atlas at all; it was November.
‘No, wait, it isn’t even November,’ she wondered.
Whenever November kissed her, he was so gentle and careful, like he was holding the rarest treasure in the galaxy, always afraid he’d hurt her, or break her.
And sometimes, as they kissed, his eyes would get all misty, and November would sniffle, “Layla, please don’t go.”
It was still those same eyes, but now they glinted with a chill, almost icy light.
They reminded her of the endless universe. It was dangerous, mesmerizing, and impossible to look away from.
Layla instinctively tried to dodge, but before she could move, a strong arm yanked her in by the waist, pulling her close.
Layla’s shift tier was nothing to sneeze at, but Atlas was the one and only shifter on Alpha Prime who was above SSS Tier.
Pinned in his grip, Layla was so mad that she couldn’t hold back. She bit down hard on the corner of his mouth.
Wolf shifters didn’t mess around when it came to biting; their jaws were made for this.
Atlas caught the danger and jerked away just in time, but a bright streak of blood still stained the edge of his pale lips. The whole scene was wild and dangerously intimate.
Inside the cramped aero-vehicle, the air was practically humming with a sultry, electric charge.
Just then, the aero-vehicle pulled up in front of Imperial Academy.
Atlas’s voice gave nothing away. No one could tell if he was pissed or pleased. “What? Not getting out? Planning to join me on the battlefield?” he asked.
Layla turned and walked out without a word.
Out of Layla’s sight, Atlas traced the wound at the corner of his mouth with his tongue, slowly savoring the mark she’d left behind.
After all, that was Layla’s doing.
Meanwhile, once Layla was finally out of Atlas’s psychic force range, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She just couldn’t read Atlas anymore.
Just then, her phone buzzed. It was Celia calling.
“Layla, when are you coming back? Want me to come pick you up?” Celia asked.
“I’ve got finals coming up, so I’ll head back after they’re done. No need to pick me up, though. How’s your health been

lately?” Layla replied.
“I’m much better now. Don’t worry about us. Just focus on your exams,” Celia said.
“Okay,” Layla replied.
After hanging up with Celia, Layla saw a new message pop up from Nolan.
Nolan: [Layla, are you with Prince Atlas now?]
Layla sighed to herself.
Honestly, if she could, she wouldn’t take anyone’s side.
Layla shoved all her problems aside and threw herself into studying for finals.
She booked an aero-vehicle ticket to Wastelands-9 for the week after finals.
November had gone missing again, and Chaim and the others were all teasing that he was definitely going to flunk finals. But Layla just tuned them out.
Honestly, even if the whole universe flunked, November would still ace it.
Jayvon had just made it into Class S, and he sidled up to Layla, whispering, “Hey, did you hear about the winter break training camp? They’re taking us to an alien planet for real combat drills. We get to fight starbeasts!
“The whole time, we’ll have military commanders guiding and protecting us. It’s gonna be wild, and it’ll really help us grow!”
Layla just replied flatly, “Oh.”
“Hey, how come you’re not excited at all? I heard if you’re in Class S and want in, you just have to go sign up with the Crown Squad!” Jayvon said.
“Not interested,” Layla replied.
After finishing her last practice test, Layla looked up and caught Jayvon looking all awkward.
She cut straight to the chase. “Jayvon, I know you’re always scheming. Just say what you want. Quit beating around the bush.”
Finally, Jayvon steeled himself and said, “Layla, let me join your squad!”
