Jayvon had hidden his true strength before for his mother, but now he was ready to step into the spotlight, also for her, so the Turner family wouldn’t push them around anymore.
But nobody could fight alone. Jayvon had to join a squad. He had high hopes for Layla.
“Sorry, my squad’s already full.” Layla shot Jayvon down without a second thought and strode out.
Jayvon chased after her, sounding desperate. “But November’s always MIA, and Annie and Wallace didn’t even make it into Class S.
“Most of the time, it’s you and Alex! Layla, I’m not bad, okay? I’m not as amazing as you, but I can be a mech engineer or a trooper! If you don’t believe, let’s hit the Mech Combat Arena and see who’s got the skills!”
“Exams are coming up. I don’t have time.” Layla walked off, leaving Jayvon so pissed that his eyes practically turned red.
Alex glanced up, shifted to a more comfortable position, and went right back to sleep on the table.
Chaim strolled by, grinning like he was watching a train wreck. “You’re still begging Layla? Are you out of your mind? Why waste your time on her? Go ask someone else.”
“I want to join the Crown Squad. Think you can get me in? Just imagine. If I make it, you’re out,” Jayvon shot back.
During the Mech Engineering Division exams, Layla was way ahead in first place, Chaim took second, and Jayvon landed in third.
But honestly, Jayvon was just a hair behind Chaim. Chaim only edged him out because he handed in his test a bit quicker.
Layla was a total monster. She breezed through those Ultra-S Tier mech problems like it was nothing.
Chaim and Jayvon had the exact same exam. So, honestly, their skills were pretty much on par.
Chaim’s face darkened as he snorted coldly, “You think you can kick me out? Keep dreaming!”
Jayvon looked just as upset.
If no squad took him in, proving himself and making his mom proud was starting to look impossible.
After a moment’s thought, Jayvon turned and went to find Alex.
Alex agreed to hit the virtual training arena with Jayvon.
When they finished, Alex shot Jayvon a look and dropped just one line “You’ve got skills, but Layla can’t stand teammates who are always playing games.”
Jayvon stood frozen, speechless.
That evening, Layla and Annie grabbed dinner together at the school cafeteria.
Annie started spilling the tea about how she’d been chasing after Randall.
Layla couldn’t help but marvel at Annie’s shamelessness.
“He hasn’t just thrown you out yet? Wow, he’s got some serious self-control,” Layla said.

Annie bit down on her spoon. “Honestly, he was about to toss me out, but I got smart and started trash-talking the Mooney family.
“You know how much he hates them, so he totally softened up. Once a guy goes soft on you, the rest is easy!”
‘Can you really do that?’ Layla thought, a little taken aback.
Suddenly, Layla found herself thinking about Atlas’s kiss from not long ago.
It was so baffling, and she couldn’t exactly go up and ask him why he’d done it.
She knew Atlas wouldn’t give her an answer anyway.
Maybe there were plenty of reasons, but ‘because he likes her’ definitely wasn’t one of them.
After all, except for those rare moments during his rut, Atlas was always distant and impossible to read.
He was out of reach, like he existed in a world far above everyone else.
“I’ve decided! I’m spending the holidays at Randall’s place this year!” Annie declared.
Layla was still caught up thinking about that kiss on the aero-vehicle when Annie suddenly dropped the bombshell. Layla almost spat out her food.
“Wait, you two are moving that fast?” Layla blurted out, totally stunned.
Annie grinned, “Not bad, right? Randall’s not on board, but his mom said yes!”
Layla watched Annie, her cat-like eyes glinting with amusement.
Layla could tell Annie had real feelings for Randall.
Randall might have a bias against noble girls, but it wasn’t Annie herself he disliked.
Maybe those two really could end up together.
Layla couldn’t help but feel a little envious.
Love always needed someone willing to make the leap.
It was always a good thing when both people were willing to go all in for each other. But even if it was not mutual, at least someone was going to take the plunge and make things happen, just like Annie and Randall.
Layla thought about her situation with Atlas and couldn’t help but sigh deeply.
‘Whatever, the holidays are coming up. No point stressing about this mess,’ she told herself.
Instead, Layla started thinking about what gifts she could bring back for Celia and the kids after the exams.
Annie was all smiles, gushing about spending the holidays at Randall’s place, when suddenly, Kierra showed up, her face so frosty that it could freeze over the whole cafeteria.
Kierra had come to eat, but she didn’t have time for that now.
Kierra shot Annie a look, annoyed at how she’d been dodging home for ages. “Seriously, Annie, when are you going to stop this? Do you even know your mom’s gotten sick over all your drama?”
“What? My mom’s sick?” Annie blurted out.

Annie’s refusal to marry Branden had caused a huge mess between the two families, but Annie just stayed at school, leaving the Knight family with no choice but to wait until her finals were over.
Annie had even set her optical computer to block all calls from the Knight family. So, she really had no idea her mom was sick.
Kierra said coldly, “You don’t care about your family, and you don’t care about your mom. Annie, you’re just selfish, and you wonder why the family always picked me over you?”
Annie shot back, “You’re not selfish? Then why don’t you marry Branden? Isn’t it just because you think you’re too good for him?”
Just then, Branden’s cousin, Vanessa, who’d been beaten up by Layla before, happened to walk into the cafeteria with her friends.
Vanessa caught every word.
Both Knight sisters were trashing her cousin, Branden, and Vanessa was so mad that she was shaking with rage.
But when Vanessa saw Layla standing nearby, the flashback of Layla beating her up last time hit her hard; she could almost feel the bruises all over again.
Vanessa instantly lost her appetite and turned to leave.
Annie, too worried about her sick mom, was about to head out as well.
“Layla, I’m gonna go check on my mom. I’ll call you if anything comes up,” Annie said.
“Okay,” Layla replied.
Layla watched Annie rush off and couldn’t help but worry a little.
But then Layla thought, ‘No way Kierra would have the guts to make up something like Annie’s mom being sick just to mess
with her.’
Kierra didn’t leave. She watched Layla quietly eating, then suddenly threw out, “Honestly, you could join the Crown Squad anytime you wanted, no sweat.
“So why haven’t you? Or do you seriously think Prince Atlas stands a better chance than Prince Krish?”
