Chapter 87

By now, almost everyone thought Layla just didn’t know what was good for her.

Layla ignored the olive branch extended by Krish and instead went to join Atlas.

Layla couldn’t be bothered to explain herself. She calmly finished her meal, then looked up. “This isn’t really something we regular students should be gossiping about, right?

“Do you need anything else? If not, just get out of my way. You’re ruining my appetite.”

Kierra’s already serious face went even more stone-cold. She clenched her fists as she said, “Layla, don’t get too cocky. Do you dare face me at the Mech Combat Arena?”

Back during training, Kierra had lost to Layla. Ever since then, Kierra had been pushing herself hard in training.

As someone who’d always been the golden child, it was unthinkable for Kierra to lose, especially to a mere mech engineer.

So Kierra threw down a challenge for a PK match against Layla.

But Layla had zero interest in fighting anyone right now. She just wanted to get her exams over with and spend the holidays at the orphanage.

“Sorry, I don’t have time for this,” Layla said, standing up and heading out.

Kierra just stood there, frustrated and stunned.

Layla didn’t give Kierra a second thought. She went right back to her own routine. She hit the books and went to her final

exam.

With winter break coming up, everyone had their plans. The Crown Squad and all their hangers-on were already gearing up for the winter boot camps.

Meanwhile, off-worlders who weren’t exactly rolling in credits were planning to pick up part-time jobs over the break to cover their tuition fees.

It was especially tough for the Mech Engineering Division; mech suits burnt through resources fast, and unless one was loaded like Chaim, one would be sweating over every credit.

Jayvon’s family barely gave him any resources, so he figured he’d hustle during break to scrape together enough for some new mech parts.

Jayvon still wanted to hang out with Layla, so he reached out and asked if she wanted to team up for some winter break work to earn extra cash for tuition and mech parts.

Layla shook her head. “No, I’m not planning to work over break.”

Even if she didn’t touch the pile of mech parts Atlas had given her, Layla could easily score whatever she needed as Hades.

Layla hadn’t spent the holidays with Celia and the other kids at the orphanage in years, and after everything that had happened lately, she just wanted to spend some quality time with them.

Layla wanted to get away from everything on Alpha Prime. That included Atlas.

Jayvon looked surprised. “Didn’t you leave the Sullivan family? Do you have your tuition and practical fees covered for next

semester?”

“Of course, she does. Haven’t you heard? She’s been hanging out with Nolan a lot lately,” a voice cut in.

Chapter 87

Layla looked up and saw it was Leon, Caleb’s roommate.

Caleb was standing next to Leon, his face dark and brooding.

Ever since November gave Caleb another beatdown, Caleb had gotten even darker and moodier.

Then, after hearing from his dad that November and Layla had both sided with Atlas, and that nobody could mess with them for now, Caleb’s feelings got even more tangled.

November had also roughed up Leon last time, so now whenever Leon saw Layla, he got all sarcastic and weird around her.

Layla narrowed her eyes, a dangerous glint flashing in them.

Jayvon, standing nearby, looked surprised. “What’s the big deal about Layla and Nolan hanging out? They’re siblings, aren’t they?”

Leon kept up his sarcastic tone. “Yeah, they’re siblings, but not by blood! She sure knows how to win guys over, one after another!”

Layla didn’t even hesitate; she just stepped up and socked Leon right in the face.

Leon never saw it coming and took the punch full on. He clutched his bruised eye, yelling, furious, “You actually dared to start a fight on campus?”

Imperial Academy had a strict no-fighting rule, so whenever students, especially the brawlers from the College of Military, had a conflict, they’d settle it at the Mech Combat Arena.

There were teachers supervising them, so nobody was ever in real danger.

Or, they’d settle things in the virtual mech training room, climbing into the pods for some avatar-on-avatar PK.

The virtual battles were way safer for students.

Anyone who actually got into a real-life fight on campus would get slapped with a punishment or at least a warning.

Leon only ran his mouth because he figured Layla wouldn’t dare throw a punch on campus. As for the Mech Combat Arena, he knew he’d get wrecked by Layla, so there was no way he’d go there.

But now, Layla had just punched him right in front of everyone.

Caleb’s face turned even darker. He snapped, “Layla, you seriously just threw a punch right here on campus?”

“He mouthed off about Nolan and me. Why shouldn’t I hit him?” Layla shot Caleb a frosty look, then strode right up to Leon, not backing down for a second.

Leon shrank back under her dangerous glare, instinctively taking a step away.

Jayvon, always trying to score points with Layla, jumped in. “Leon, did you forget November threw hands on campus, too? This whole mess is on you. Just say sorry to Layla and let’s move on.”

Leon ground his teeth. “Why don’t you mind your own damn business?”

Jayvon just shrugged. “Hey, I’m just trying to help you guys out.”

Leon suddenly remembered how November totally handed his ass to him last time. He glanced at Caleb, who’d gotten

wrecked even harder.

Caleb locked his eyes on Layla, each word coming out slow and deliberate. “Layla, are you really with Nolan now?”

Layla narrowed her eyes at Caleb. “So that’s why Leon’s talking trash. You’re the one who started all these rumors?”

Layla had been in a foul mood lately, and now that Caleb had walked right into her line of fire, she didn’t hesitate. She swung a punch straight at him.

Layla went straight for Caleb’s mouth.

Caleb got slapped so hard and so fast that his head was spinning, his ears ringing like crazy. His lips were already puffed up.

Seeing this, Leon was about to jump in and help, but Jayvon just shot him a cool look. “This is between Layla and Caleb. Why are you getting involved? Did you forget how you got your ass handed to you last time?”

Leon froze in his tracks.

He remembered how brutal it was getting wrecked by November last time. The most frustrating part was that he couldn’t even do anything about it afterward.

But since Leon was Caleb’s roommate and buddy, just standing there and doing nothing felt off.

In the end, Leon just stood off to the side and shouted, “Go, Caleb!”

Caleb’s mouth was already swollen up like a sausage from Layla’s punches, and hearing Leon cheer him on just made him even angrier. But the truth was, Caleb really couldn’t beat Layla.

More and more people were crowding around, and Caleb was worried he’d just get his ass handed to him again like last time. He quickly backed off, putting some distance between himself and Layla.

Caleb wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and spat, “Layla, you’re just a crazy woman! Refusing to marry you was the smartest thing I ever did!”

Layla shot Caleb a cold look. “You still don’t get it, Caleb. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to marry me; good enough for me.”

it’s that

you were never

With that, Layla turned and walked away.

After giving Caleb a good beating, Layla actually felt a lot better.

‘Why’d Caleb suddenly start talking about Nolan and me?’ Layla wondered. ‘Hopefully, it’s just Caleb spouting nonsense, and it won’t end up causing Nolan. any trouble.’

What Layla didn’t know was that right now, Nolan, who was about to head off-world for work, was getting grilled by his whole family.

Harper looked heartbroken as she asked, “Nolan, is it true what everyone’s saying? Are you really with Layla now?”
