Nolan was completely stunned.

“Mom, what are you even saying? Layla and I are siblings. Who’s been filling your head with this nonsense?” Nolan said.
Harper’s eyes were red, her voice trembling as she spoke, “It’s not true? Good, that’s good. Layla’s just an orphan girl. She’s not good enough for you!”
Nolan couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Mom, don’t talk down about Layla like that. She’s amazing. Back when she lived with us, didn’t you really like her?”
“That was only because Xanthe was missing! What? You can’t stand me saying a few things about Layla?
“You’ve always taken her side, even more than Xanthe. Nolan, are you seriously telling me there’s nothing going on between you and Layla?” Harper pressed.
Nolan felt suffocated; his mom was being completely irrational. He had a splitting headache. He wanted nothing more than to escape this house.
Seeing Nolan like this, Harper grew anxious and quickly turned to her husband for help.
“Honey, can’t you do something about Nolan? He has such a bright future ahead of him. He can’t let Layla ruin everything!” Harper pleaded.
“Mom, will you just stop already?” Nolan snapped.
“Enough!” Karter, the head of the family, finally spoke up.
Karter looked straight at Nolan and said, “Nolan, do you really think you can get Layla to divorce November and marry you?”
As soon as Karter finished speaking, everyone in the room was left speechless.
Harper stared at her husband in disbelief. “Honey, what are you even saying?
“Didn’t you always say Nolan was destined for great things and should marry some high-born lady? And now you’re actually suggesting he marry Layla?”
Karter shot Harper a look of disdain. “Don’t you know Prince Krish was really interested in Layla? I heard his cousin Tomas is after her!”
“B-But-” Harper stammered.
“But what? If you hadn’t been so stupid and thrown Layla out of our house, would we be stuck having to risk Nolan’s future and happiness over this?” Karter snapped.
Harper was left speechless.
But as Nolan listened to his parents argue, he felt his heart turn gold. He finally understood why Layla felt she had no choice but to leave this place.
Upstairs, his sister was always locked away, crying her eyes out and threatening to do something drastic. His mom believed every rumor she heard, never knowing what was true or not.
And his dad only cared about his interests, ready to throw anyone under the bus for his own gain.
‘What kind of warmth or happiness could there possibly be in a family like this?’ Nolan thought.

Nolan turned and headed for the door, but Karter’s stern voice called after him. “Nolan, where do you think you’re going? Are you off to find Layla at school?”
“I’m going to Military Command,” Nolan replied.
Nolan was supposed to ship out to the planet he’d been assigned to garrison tomorrow, but right now, he couldn’t stand to stay in this house for even another minute.
Nolan climbed into his aero-vehicle, set the destination for Military Command, and didn’t say a single word the whole way.
‘Where did Mom even hear all these rumors? What if they end up hurting Layla?’ Nolan thought.
Nolan didn’t hesitate; he called Layla right away. Layla picked up almost instantly.
Nolan hesitated, remembering all the drama between Krish and Atlas lately. Then he asked seriously, “Layla, can November really keep you safe?”
Layla could tell Nolan was holding something back. “Nolan, what’s going on? If there’s something you need to say, just say it.”
“Layla, you know about the power struggle between Prince Krish and Prince Altas, right?
“This kind of thing is only going to get worse. If you’re siding with Prince Altas how, you could be putting yourself in danger,” Nolan warned.
Layla realized Nolan was just trying to look out for her. She replied calmly, “I know. But Nolan, do you think we’ll ever become enemies?”
Nolan didn’t even hesitate. “Never! You’ll always be my little sister.”
Layla nodded. “And you’ll always be my big brother.”
Both of them were smart enough not to mention those absurd, unbelievable rumors. No matter how their loyalties might shift in the future, they’d never draw swords against each other.
Layla thought to herself, ‘If I ever had a true older brother, he’d probably be just like Nolan.
After the exams were over, Layla packed up and was getting ready to catch a shuttle to Wastelands-9 Orphan Core.
She’d already ordered all the gifts online, and the packages had arrived, so she was just going to bring them along.
But right as she was about to head out, someone knocked on her dorm room door; an interstellar courier was there with another delivery.
Layla blinked in surprise. “I’ve already gotten everything I ordered. Did you get the wrong room?”
The robot courier insisted, “No mistake, this is for you. Please sign here.”
Layla signed for it, still a bit skeptical. It was another spatial storage device. When she unlocked it with the code, she found it packed full of starbeast bones, teeth, claws, and all sorts of other bits.
Layla was speechless.
Just then, Zaa’s cold, mechanical voice spoke up, “Layla, Zee messaged me. Its master sent you this, for you to use when building your mech suit.”
Layla’s mouth twitched.
She still hadn’t even had a chance to return all those high-end mech suit parts Atlas had sent her before. And now Atlas was sending her a whole pile of starbeast components.

“This really doesn’t seem like something November would do, and it’s definitely not the kind of thing the real, icy Atlas would pull, Layla thought. ‘Did Prince Atlas suddenly develop a split personality or something?’
Just then, Zaa chimed in, “Layla, Zee said his master is heading off to battle and doesn’t have time to answer your messages. He said not to turn it down.”
Layla pressed a hand to her forehead. “Alright, I’ll just hang onto it for now and give it all back to him later.”
Good thing the storage unit keeps everything fresh; at least those starbeast parts wouldn’t go bad.
But then Layla suddenly remembered what Atlas had told her during his rut. He’d asked if Layla could spend some time. with his mom, Queen Leilani, whenever she had the chance.
Layla didn’t have the status or any way to actually go see Leilani, and with the New Year coming up, Atlas was off Alpha Prime, and Layla was heading to the orphanage on Wastelands-9.
Layla saw she still had a bit of time, so she grabbed some flour, veggies, and fresh meat, and whipped up fifty ravioli right there in her dorm.
Once they were done, she sealed them up in a fresh-keeping box and shipped them off to Mollie’s address.
Layla couldn’t send anything straight to Leilani, but since Mollie was Leilani’s bodyguard, sending the ravioli to her would make sure Mollie got the hint.
As for whether Leilani actually liked ravioli or not, that wasn’t Layla’s problem.
Layla just wanted to pay Atlas back for all those times he’d sent her stuff.
Once Layla had finished getting everything ready, Layla headed out. Just as she climbed aboard the public aero-vehicle, someone else hurried in right after her.
That person dropped into the seat right next to Layla.
Layla glanced over at Annie, who was panting and clearly out of breath. Layla blinked in surprise and asked, “Annie, are you okay?”
“I nearly got left behind! Ugh, no time to explain. Where are you off to?” Annie gasped.
“I’m going to Wastelands-9 Orphan Core,” Layla replied.
“I’m coming with you!” Annie blurted out.
