A civilian spaceship was slowly pulling away from the docking bay at Alpha Prime’s port. Annie, who had just managed to get a ticket, was sitting right next to Layla.
Getting a ticket wasn’t easy. With the holidays coming up, everything was booked solid.
But Annie didn’t care. She just paid ten times the regular price to grab the seat next to Layla.
Once the ship finally took off, Annie let out a sigh of relief and went off. “Kierra is the worst!
“She totally tricked me. My mom wasn’t even sick. As soon as I got home, they kept me locked up, took away my optical computer, and I didn’t even get to take my last exam!”
Layla was stunned. “What were they planning?”
“What else? They just wanted me to spend Branden’s rut with him, get pregnant, and then I’d be stuck marrying him!” Annie spat.
“So how did you get out?” Layla asked.
“Oh, I used that weapon you made for me to stab Branden, then I bolted. My mom secretly gave me my optical computer back,” Annie sighed.
“She really does care about me. She knows I hate all this, but there’s nothing she can do. Her marriage was just a family arrangement,” she added.
One of the reasons the noble families on Alpha Prime had managed to stay on top for so long was that they were always arranging marriages to keep their alliances strong.
Annie might have been favored at home, but when it came to the family’s future, her own happiness didn’t matter at all.
Layla knew all too well how these things worked. If she hadn’t left the Sullivan family, she probably would’ve been forced into a marriage with Caleb, too.
“Annie, what are you going to do now?” Layla asked.
Annie said, “I was planning to spend the holidays at Randall’s place, but that’s out of the question now. I need to lay low for a while, at least until Branden’s rut is over.
“Didn’t you say you were spending the New Year at the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core? I’m coming with you!”
Layla could only sigh at suddenly having Annie sticking to her like glue, but honestly, Annie had nowhere else to go.
Then Layla suddenly remembered the dagger she’d made. That thing could slice through steel like it was nothing.
“So, where exactly did you stab Branden with that dagger?” Layla asked.
Annie looked super uncomfortable all of a sudden. She stammered, “U-Uh, you know, down there.”
Layla saw Annie’s face and dropped it. ‘No need to ask, she’s really messed things up this time, wondered Layla.
With all the advanced medical tech, Branden’s physical injuries would heal up in no time. But the hit to his pride and the trauma were something he’d probably never get over.
The Knight and Marshall families were definitely going to be at each other’s throats now.
But Layla didn’t think Annie was wrong at all. ‘Seriously, who does that? If someone says no, you just force them anyway?

That’s just messed up,’ Layla wondered.

These noble families only really cared about their kids if they showed promise; those ones got trained up and shipped off to the Military Command. But if you didn’t have the talent, you were just used for family marriage deals.
Sooner or later, they were gonna get what was coming to them for this kind of idiotic scheme.
The Knight and Marshall families were like this, and the Sullivan and James families were no different.
“You coming with me to Wastelands-9 Orphan Core is cool, but aren’t you gonna give Randall a heads-up?” Layla asked.
Annie mumbled, sounding down, “I can’t reach out to him right now, and I definitely can’t go see him. I don’t want to drag him into all this trouble. Anyway, I’ll deal with it after the holidays.”
“Alright,” Layla said.
Layla could see that Annie was totally into Randall. Layla was always thinking about him, putting him first.
Since Wastelands-9 was pretty far from Alpha Prime, the ship had to stop at a few other planets along the way to let people on and off and restock fuel.
But then, out of nowhere, the ship suddenly stopped at a port on some unknown planet, totally off our flight path. Suddenly, someone yelled, “The rebels!”
Panic swept through the passengers. People started dragging their kids and running for their lives.
Layla and Annie shot each other a look. ‘We just wanted a chill holiday. How did we get this unlucky?’ Layla thought.
“What do we do now?” Annie whispered, “I heard the rebels are brutal, do whatever they want, and kill without blinking!”
“Stay calm. If we join the rush for the exit now, we’ll just get trampled in the chaos. We might even end up in a stampede. Trust me, let’s head over to the cockpit and figure out what’s really happening,” Layla said.
The ship had already landed, and the doors were open. Everyone was stampeding for the exit, desperate to get out first. But then, screams started echoing from below.
Stellar rangers in black uniforms and masks were blocking the exit, piloting mech suits and mowing people down without
mercy.
Layla and Annie made it to the upper deck’s glass wall, staring down at the chaos. They were completely stunned.
Annie’s teeth were chattering. “Layla, w-what do we do? Shouldn’t we call Alpha Prime’s security center right now?”
“I already tried, but there’s no signal. We can’t get through. For now, we need to shut the doors and make sure none of those rebels get on board!” Layla said.
“What if some of them manage to get on board?” Annie asked.
“Then we take them out!” Layla replied.
Judging by their uniforms, the main rebel force was still stationed at the ship’s entrance. Only a handful of passengers had made it out, while the rest kept surging forward, completely unaware of the massacre happening just ahead.
Layla finally found the control console, only to realize the pilot and crew had all bailed or were hiding somewhere. Layla just rolled her eyes.
Annie was freaking out, pacing in circles. “Ugh, how are we supposed to fly this thing? Didn’t we learn this in class? There are a million buttons. How do I even know which one to hit?”

Annie turned and saw Layla’s fingers flying over the controls, punching in commands on the virtual screen like a pro.
Annie dashed to the glass window and peered down; finally, the doors slammed shut!
But a handful of rebels in black managed to force their way inside. The ship was way too cramped for their mech suits, so they had to leave those behind and came in swinging their weapons at anyone in sight.
The passengers scattered like terrified sheep, bolting back in terror.
The good news was that there weren’t many rebels on board. It was just seven or eight.
Annie spun around, her eyes wide with excitement. “Layla, can we get this ship moving now?”
Layla frowned and shook her head. “The flight system’s been damaged. We can’t take off yet.”
“What? Then what are we supposed to do?” Annie blurted out.
“I will fix it,” Layla replied.
Annie blinked, suddenly wondering, ‘Did I totally mess up picking Trooper Division? Should’ve gone with Mech Engineering instead. Wow, Mech Engineering Division is on a whole other level!’
While Layla was busy setting up the repair program, she grabbed the ship’s PA system and shouted, “Listen up, everyone!
“The doors are locked. If we team up and wipe out the rebels who made it onboard, we’ll be safe, at least for now!”
She added, “But remember, time’s running out. The rebels outside are still hammering the ship, and our armor won’t last much longer!
“The ship’s damaged, and it’ll take a bit to fix. I’ll get us flying again as fast as I can, but those rebels who got inside? They’re yours to handle! Stick together and fight. Let’s make it out alive!”
The passengers looked at each other, panic in their eyes, but a few snapped out of it fast. Someone yelled, “Everyone, together! If we take these guys down, we can make it out alive!”
