Chapter 95
Chapter 95
Atlas had no idea how long he’d been frozen in place, but Layla never made a move.
It wasn’t until his body started to go numb that he caught the sound of Layla’s steady breathing right by his ear.
Atlas let out a quiet sigh of relief.
He realized she was still asleep.
Layla was always on edge. Kids from the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core never really felt safe, and even after she was adopted by the Sullivan family, she never let her guard down.
Back when they were on that civilian starship, it was her quick thinking that ended up saving a bunch of lives.
But now, lying in Atlas’s arms, she looked totally at ease, like she finally felt safe.
Feeling how much Layla trusted and relied on him, Atlas couldn’t help but smile.
His usually cold expression softened, just a little-so subtle that it was almost impossible to notice.
After what felt like forever, Atlas finally drifted off into a deep sleep.
Layla was dreaming.
To her surprise, she found herself with her parents.
Even in her dream, Layla knew the loving couple by her side weren’t Karter and Harper.
They were her birth parents.
But Layla couldn’t remember what her parents looked like-their faces stayed blurry in her dream. Still, she could feel how much they loved each other.
Karter was rough around the edges, but when he was with his wife and daughter, he turned into a big softie.
Harper was always gentle and soft-spoken with her, but around her husband, she’d turn adorably fierce-playfully bossy in a way that was just too cute.
Karter and Harper were full of these lovable contrasts, and being with them, Layla felt a kind of warmth she’d never known before. It was a real sense of home.
When Layla finally woke up, she was still in a bit of a haze.
‘Would this be what it felt like if my birth parents were still alive?’ she wondered.
“You’re awake?” A voice suddenly snapped Layla out of her dream. Layla looked up, finding herself face-to-face with a strikingly handsome man.
He was wearing a loose, unbuttoned uniform, his tanned chest on full display.
He looked like he’d just woken up, too, his long lashes fluttering as he blinked.
“November?” Layla called out.
“Morning, Layla,” November said, suddenly leaning in to give her a quick, playful kiss on her forehead.
His eyes were bright.

And in them, she caught a glimpse of her own sleepy face.
‘November really is into me. Layla thought, feeling her heart flutter. That explains why I fully occupy his eyes:
With that realization, Layla’s heart felt all warm and fuzzy. She sat up slowly, massaging her stiff neck.
“When did you wake up?” Layla asked.
“Literally a second before you did,” November said with a cheeky grin.
Layla could tell he was totally making that up, but she let it slide. She glanced at the clock. They’d be arriving at Wastelands-9 Orphan Core any minute now, so she jumped out of bed and started packing up.
The starship finally touched down.
Layla double-checked, “Are you seriously coming with me to the orphanage for the holiday? Don’t you have stuff to deal with at the Military Command?”
Layla double-checked, “Are you seriously coming with me to the orphanage for the holiday? Don’t you have stuff to deal with at the Military Command?”
Roger was silently complaining inside, ‘Man, I wish I could go home and snuggle up with my girl, too.
But he still put on his best sincere smile and said, “Your Highness, please don’t worry. I’ll take care of everything on the planets the rebels took over.”
With a hint of impatience, November nodded in response, then turned to Layla and asked, “Should I bring anything for the kids at Wastelands-9 Orphan Core?”
Layla thought for a second. “Just grab some small gifts or something. And put your mask on.”
“Alright. Wait here for me, Layla,” November said, then turned and headed off to the storage room to pick out some gifts for the kids at Wastelands-9 Orphan Core.
He made his way to the storage room, searching for something to bring as presents for the kids in the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core.
Layla stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out at the familiar Wastelands-9 port, when it suddenly hit her.
‘How could I forget about Annie?’ she thought, smacking herself mentally.
Layla hurried over to Annie’s room and knocked. But when the door opened, instead of Annie, a man in a crisp military uniform stepped out.
Layla was caught off guard. “Commander Norris?” she blurted out, surprised.
Randall gave her a slight nod in response, just enough to count as a greeting, and strode off without another word.
Annie’s voice rang out from inside, “Finally, you’re awake, Layla. I couldn’t find you anywhere yesterday. Where did you disappear to? I messaged you, and you didn’t even text me back.”
Layla wasn’t single anymore. When she stepped forward, she immediately picked up on the pheromone haze still hanging in the room.
She stepped back again.
She said, “Just finish up and come out when you’re ready.”
Annie stood there for a few seconds, and when she finally realized what Layla meant, her cheeks instantly flushed bright red.

She didn’t keep Layla waiting long. Annie got ready in a flash and stepped out of the room, mumbling awkwardly. “Layla, 1 think I’ll skip going to Wastelands-9 Orphan Core with you for the holiday.”
“Okay,” Layla replied.
“Wait. Why aren’t you even surprised?” Annie blurted out, her eyes wide.
Annie was shocked. Her rut hit out of nowhere yesterday, and she clung to Randall, refusing to let him go. In the end, he actually stayed with her all night.
They’d been married for ages, but Randall hated everything about the noble families, so he kept insisting on a divorce.
But Annie just wouldn’t give up.
This time… it was a surprise, but somehow, things just felt right between them.
Layla caught Annie’s bashful look and remarked in resignation, “Come on, Annie. I’m married now. Of course, I get it. You want to stay here with Randall, right?
“Honestly, I’m just glad things are finally working out between you two. As your friend, I’m really happy for you.”
Annie beamed, “Thanks, Layla. I knew you were the best. Randall has to stay stationed on that planet to handle things, so he’ll be here at least until after the holiday-probably until school starts up again.
“I figured I’d stick around with him. It’s just a shame his mom will have to spend the holiday alone on Alpha Prime.”
But that was just how it went. Randall was a stellar ranger, always deployed with the troops, so he seldom got to spend the holidays on Alpha Prime. Most years, his mom ended up celebrating by herself.
Annie said excitedly, “This year, I’m spending Christmas with him off-world. Next time, I’ll head back to Alpha Prime and celebrate with his mom.”
Layla didn’t want to rain on Annie’s parade. The Knight family still had a ton of dráma going on, but seeing Annie so happy. Layla thought, ‘Honestly, this is pretty great. At least she and Randall really seem meant for each other.
If they worked together, maybe they really would get through anything.
At moments like this, Layla couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy for her friend.
Annie said apologetically, “Layla, I can’t go with you to the orphanage for the holiday then…”
Layla was just about to say it was no big deal. Annie was never a sure thing anyway, so it was not like she was bailing on her. Then, November returned, mask on and gifts in hand.
“Layla, I’m all set. Let’s go,” he urged.
“Alright,” Layla replied.
Annie looked absolutely floored when November popped up out of nowhere.
But then she shot Layla a sly wink. “Now that November is going with you, I’m not worried at all.”
In the end, Annie stayed on the starship as Randall’s partner.
Since Prince Atlas had made the arrangement, she got to keep that fancy lounge all to herself.
Meanwhile, Layla and November got off the starship and had to wait a good half hour before a public aero-vehicle finally
arrived.
