Chapter 96
Chapter 96
Wastelands-9 was pretty barren, with no real energy sources at all.
The rich and capable had all left, leaving behind those who had no choice but to stay.
Hence, when Layla was adopted by the Sullivan family, everyone was jealous of her.
But later, when word got out that she’d been kicked out, a lot of folks couldn’t help but gloat.
“Wait. Isn’t that Layla? Didn’t she always spend Christmas at Sullivan Manor? What’s she doing back here this time?” A woman on the public aero-vehicle snickered, her tone full of mockery.
November’s gaze went icy behind his mask.
But Layla reached out and placed her hand gently on November’s to calm him down.
She knew exactly how dangerous November could be. If Prince Atlas really lost his cool, everyone on this aero-vehicle might get overwhelmed by his psychic force.
As soon as Layla held his hand, November’s anger seemed to melt away, her touch soothing the storm raging inside him.
Layla turned to that woman. “Nancy, since you’re so obsessed with where I spend Christmas, don’t forget to bring a big present for Celia this year.”
“Why should I give Celia a Christmas gift?” Nancy grumbled. Then her eyes landed on Layla and November’s joined hands, and she lit up like she’d struck gold.
She exclaimed, “Whoa, Layla! You actually got yourself a boyfriend? Even after getting kicked out of the Sullivan family, you still landed a guy?
“But why is your boyfriend wearing a mask? Is he so ugly he has to hide behind it.., Ouch!”
Layla didn’t even flinch when Nancy talked trash about her.
But when Nancy started on November, Layla wasn’t having it.
She lashed out with her whip, and the crisp snap echoed through the aero-vehicle.
November, who’d been ready to handle things himself, quietly pulled his hand back without a word.
Having Layla defend him like that was totally new to Atlas.
It was unfamiliar, but… it was warm. Atlas felt an intense warmth.
Nancy stood there clutching her arm, completely shocked. “You… you actually hit me?”
“You slandered my husband. Why wouldn’t I hit you?” Layla snapped back.
Some people nearby looked ready to jump in for Nancy, but Layla just coolly showed off her badge of the Imperial Academy’s College of Military.
Then it dawned on them-even if Layla was out of the Sullivan family, she was still a student at the Imperial Academy’s College of Military.
Who knew? If she played her cards right, she might even join the Military Command and become a top officer someday.
But for these folks from the backwater star systems, Layla was not someone they could afford to mess with.

Chapter 96
Someone couldn’t help but whisper to Nancy, “Come on, Nancy. Just let it go. Don’t mess with Layla”

“Humph! I can’t compare to you. Sure, you’re headed for the Military Command. But so what? You think you can shield every single kid at your orphanage?” Nancy sneered.
Layla’s face darkened. “What do you mean by that?”
Nancy smirked triumphantly. “Isn’t it obvious? Your orphanage is about to get turned into the planet’s biggest garbage dump.”
Layla narrowed her eyes and asked around, and it turned out the land the orphanage sits on was actually leased from the Grant family 50 years back.
Now the 50-year lease is about to expire, and with Tommy-Nancy’s dad-running things, he was taking the land back to build a garbage processing plant.
With things getting worse around here, the number of kids at the orphanage kept shrinking year after year.
Celia got sick a while back, but there was no money for treatment. It wasn’t until Layla sold some of her mech suit designs that they finally scraped together enough for her treatment.
Now there are only 18 kids left at the orphanage. Most of the others had moved on and could take care of themselves now.
Hardly any of them got adopted, and even fewer ended up in good homes.
And now, if the land was really going to be taken back, what would Celia and the 18 kids be supposed to do?
Just then, November squeezed Layla’s hand back. “Layla, don’t worry. Let’s go back to the orphanage and see what’s really going on. There’s always a way to fix things.”
Nancy snickered, clearly enjoying the drama. “A way to fix it? How? Unless you buy the land yourself. But Layla, do you even have that kind of money?”
Sure, land on Wastelands-9 wasn’t worth nearly as much as on Alpha Prime, but the orphanage took up a huge area. Buying it would still cost a fortune.
Layla started doing some quick mental math. If things really got tight, she could always put a few more mech suit designs up for sale online in the next few days.
Or, she could just take on a couple of commissions under her Hades alias.
Nancy was still itching to throw out a few more snide remarks. After all, she’d just been whipped by Layla and hadn’t even dared to fight back.
But the next second, she suddenly felt like the air had been sucked out of the room, like someone was choking her.
She coughed in difficulties, and that was enough to shut her up.
November withdrew his psychic force and turned to see Layla, her head down, focused on her optical computer. The screen had a privacy filter on it, so he couldn’t see what she was up to.
‘Is she worried about money?’ November wondered.
With his eyes half-lidded, he opened his own optical computer and started tapping on it.
The next moment, Layla’s earpiece chimed with a flurry of notifications. Her head snapped up in surprise, only to catch November shooting her a wink with his left eye.
‘Seriously, how is someone this good-looking allowed to be so cute with me? That’s just unfair, Layla thought, her heart

skipping a beat.
Then, she realized, ‘Ugh, why am I getting more and more reluctant to break up with November?

Still feeling that electric shock in her chest from his wink, Layla managed to keep her composure. She leaned in close to November and whispered, “Why did you transfer so much money to me?”
Up to now, Layla still hadn’t figured out just how many zeroes were in that amount.
November gave her palm a gentle squeeze. “My money is yours, Layla. Spend it however you want.”
Layla’s lips twitched in exasperation.
‘Seriously, that’s Atlas’s money. If he ever wakes up, he’ll totally lose it, Layla corrected him inwardly.
Layla wasn’t planning to spend a cent, but she still accepted November’s kindness. She squeezed his hand in response. “Thanks.”
They were sitting so close that nobody could see their little gestures, but just looking at them, anyone could tell they were basically glued together.
Nancy snorted, rolling her eyes like she couldn’t even stand the sight of them. Deep down, she was wishing Layla’s husband turned out to be some pathetic, ugly nobody with no cash to his name.
Thinking about her own fiancé, Nancy’s smugness kicked in again..
So when they got off the aero-vehicle, she shouted after Layla, “Oh, by the way, I’m getting married. Since you’re back for Christmas, you should come to my wedding..
“And don’t worry, I know you’re broke, so I won’t make you bring a present or anything.”
Layla couldn’t be bothered to respond to her.
They were almost at the orphanage now, and Layla didn’t want to freak out the little ones by causing a scene right in front of them.
Seeing Layla ignore her, Nancy kept shouting after her, “Do you even know who my fiance is? He’s the heir to the garbage disposal company that runs the entire planet on Wastelands-9.”
Layla finally turned around, her eyes lighting up with mock realization. “Oh, I see. So your fiancé is actual garbage”
Nancy was too furious to utter a beep.
