Chapter 97

Chapter 97

Nancy was so angry that her lips nearly twisted. She wanted to charge at Layla and smack her, but Layla’s strength made her hesitate.

In the end, Nancy just yelled, “Layla, go stick with your Wastelands-9 Orphan Core and get lost from this planet!”

Layla might have snapped back at Nancy, but as she turned away, her face fell.

It wasn’t just the Wastelands-9 Orphan Core-every orphan core out on the fringe planets had a tough time just surviving.

But it was exactly one of these barely-scraping-by orphan cores that gave Layla a place to call home.

That was right. Layla never saw the Sullivan family as her real family; the orphan core was the only place she ever felt she belonged.

“Layla, I actually have a way…” November started.

Layla cut him off. “I know you’ve got money, and I trust you want to help me and the orphan core.

“But you weren’t really thinking straight when you made that promise. Plus, moving an orphan core to Alpha Prime is no easy feat. Let’s just go see what’s going on first.”

November met Layla’s clear gaze and finally nodded in agreement,

But honestly, that wasn’t what he’d meant to say at all.

As they reached the gate of Wastelands-9 Orphan Core, the roar of heavy machinery filled the air. All around, construction crews were already breaking ground for a massive waste processing plant.

“There’s a ton of stuff that can be recycled, so Nancy’s fiancé’s family got rich off the trash business,” Layla said. But before she could finish, the sound of a child crying cut through the air.

Layla’s expression shifted instantly, and she dashed inside.

It turned out a group had already driven their machines right into the orphan/core’s yard. Leading the pack was Nancy’s father, and beside him was a man Layla didn’t recognize-probably someone from Nancy’s fiancé’s family.

Celia was clutching a child, with the rest of the kids huddled close to her. The youngest ones were sobbing in fear.

Tommy let out a frustrated sigh. “Celia, the lease is up. Why are you still clinging on? If you hold up the construction, you can’t pay for the delay.”

Celia replied, “Mr. Grant, your grandfather promised this land would always be ours. Even when things were tough, we never missed a single rent payment.

“Now you suddenly want us gone? Where are we supposed to take these kids?”

“I could find you a spot in town for now. If any of these kids want to work at the plant, that’s up to them. But they’re so young, so don’t expect more than one meal a day,” Tommy offered.

“They’re just children!” Celia burst out.

She was still recovering, and Tommy’s words hit her so hard she nearly collapsed.

Just then, a pair of strong hands steadied her.

Celia turned around, her eyes suddenly shining with excitement. “Layla, you’re back.”

Layla nodded in response, calmly stepping in front of Celia and the kids. She looked Tommy straight in the eye and said, “Mr. Grant, there are still a few days left on the lease, right?”

“Th-There’s only a week left. That’s it. Construction’s already started all around, and the work here can’t be held up, Tommy replied.

“Fine. You’ll get an answer you can accept in a week. But for now, you and your people need to leave-right now,” Layla demanded firmly.

Tommy hesitated, but the chubby guy next to him gave Layla a long, leering look and smirked. “So, you’re one of the orphans, too, huh? I’ve got other places where Celia and the kids could crash, but you…”

Before Layla could say a word, November stepped up, pressing his dagger right to the guy’s forehead, his tone chilling. “What do you plan to do to her?”

The man nearly pissed himself from fear. “W-what are you doing? Do you even know who my dad is?”

November cocked his head. “Do you know who my dad is?”

Tommy saw things were about to go south and tried to say something, but Layla cut in, her voice icy and calm. “November, we’re students at the Imperial Academy’s College of Military.

“If we accidentally kill someone out here, the school will punish us when we get back.”

“Okay,” November replied, totally unfazed.

Layla’s words were meant for Tommy and the chubby guy, loud and clear.

It finally hit Tommy that Layla was from the Imperial Academy. His face went pale immediately, and he started to tremble. He yanked the chubby guy and stammered, “W-we’ll come back in a week for your answer, Layla.”

With that, the two men bolted out of there with their crew, not daring to look back,

Celia knew they were only gone for now, and though her face was still pale with worry, she forced herself to stand tall and said to Layla, “Layla, thank goodness you’re back. I can’t believe they tried to kick us out today…”

“Celia, why didn’t you let me know about this before?” Layla asked.

Celia explained, “I only found out a couple of days ago. I was hoping to wait for you to return so we could figure out what to do together.

“But then you ran into trouble on your way, and I didn’t want to worry you.”

“Everything here matters to me. This place is my home,” Layla said firmly.

Celia was deeply moved and nodded. Then, spotting the masked November standing nearby, she asked, “Layla, and who’s this?”

November pressed his lips together, looking at Layla with puppy eyes, desperate for her attention.

He was Prince Atlas, who made void raiders and rebels wet their pants across the universe, but right now, all he wanted was for Layla to recognize him.

He just wanted her to give him an official place by her side.

Layla caught November’s hopeful gaze, hesitated for a moment, then finally said, “He’s my husband.”

November’s fox ears perked right up.

“I see. Isn’t he the one you applied for a gene-matched marriage with? Didn’t you guys split up?” Celia asked in surprise.

November’s ears flopped right back down at her words.

Layla watched the whole thing, feeling both amused and exasperated. She decided to steer the conversation away.

She said, “Our situation’s kind of complicated. Let’s not get into that right now, Celia. Let’s head inside and talk about the relocation.”

Celia just sighed.

The kids at Wastelands-9 Orphan Core lit up the moment Layla came back.

They all loved having Layla around.

The kids were even more curious about November, who’d come back with Layla. The braver ones walked right up to him and asked, “Can you take off your mask?”

November looked down at the kid and said with a straight face, “I can, but I can’t.”

“So which is it can you or not?” the kid insisted.

November glanced at the little kid with a smudged face and switched gears. “I brought you all a present-a mech suit. Who wants to try it out?”

“A real mech suit?” one of the kids gasped, eyes sparkling.

“Absolutely,” November replied, grinning.

“But we’re still so little… We only get to play with mech suits when we’re older,” the kid mumbled, a bit downcast.

The kids were clearly itching to get closer, but none of them dared to take the first step.

November blinked, a little confused. “You guys are five or six, right? I was driving/a mech suit when I was just three.”

“Wow! November, you’re so cool!” one of the kids shouted.

“November is the best!” another cheered, clapping their hands.

November had heard praise a million times before, but somehow, hearing it from these kids really warmed his heart.

Layla had been a bit worried at first, but seeing how well November was getting along with the kids, she finally relaxed.

She headed inside, checked in on Celia to make sure she took her meds and finally asked her to fill her in on what had happened.

Chapter 98 Let’s Have A Baby

Celia sighed, “The old Mr. Grant used to say this land would always be ours, but now Tommy’s in charge. There’s nothing we can do. We have to move.”

“Do you have any place in mind?” Layla had just checked her finances. Renting another place this big wouldn’t be a problem for her. But she wanted to hear Celia’s thoughts first.

Still, there was no way she’d ever let the younger kids go work in the scrapyard.

Celia heaved a sigh. “I’ve always wished every kid here could find their birth real parents or get adopted by a kind, loving family. But for every child who finds a home, another is left behind and sent to us.”

She pulled out a tall stack of photo albums. These days, everyone had gotten endless virtual albums, but Celia still liked to have the kids’ photos printed out and tucked into these old-school albums.

Celia looked up. “Layla, I still want to keep the orphanage going, to give more abandoned kids a shot at happiness. But with my health acting up…”

Layla suddenly thought of someone. She looked up and said, “Celia, just give me half a year. Let me work something out. I’ll open a new orphanage on Alpha Prime. Then I’ll bring you and the kids over.

“On Alpha Prime, your health and the kids’ education will be taken care of. Plus, it’s way easier to track down birth parents there.”

“Going to Alpha Prime would be amazing, but that would cost a fortune! Seriously, Layla, you’ve already got so much to deal with. I can’t let you take all this on yourself,” Celia said.

“It’s really no trouble at all, and I- Layla started.

She was just about to tell Celia that she could make a lot of money building mech suits when a loud bang suddenly came from outside.

Worried something had happened, Layla rushed outside, and her jaw dropped at the sight before her.

Celia wasn’t as fast as Layla and came out a few steps later, but when she saw the chaos in the yard, she just stood there, dumbfounded.

“W-Why are there so many mech suits?” Celia stammered.

It turned out more than a dozen mech suits had rolled out at once. They were so huge that they ended up crushing the wall next to them.

Tommy and his crew were working just down the way, and when they saw the scene unfold, they broke out in a cold sweat.

‘Thank goodness we didn’t keep trying to force the orphanage folks out earlier, Tommy thought in fear.

Layla hurried over to check on the kids. Seeing that no one was hurt, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. She looked at November, still a bit stunned. “November, what’s going on here?”

“They are the gifts for the kids,” November answered.

Silently, Layla glanced at November’s face and realized she’d underestimated him. She’d thought he’d just make some little robot dogs or other cute gadgets for the kids.

But who could’ve imagined that, when he made a move, it was with a dozen A-Tier mech suits?

Even the College of Military at the Imperial Academy couldn’t put on a show like this.

However, seeing November’s innocent face, Layla couldn’t bring herself to get angry.

She patiently said, “This gift is way too extravagant. You should take them back. Besides, the kids are still too young to pilot mech suits.”

“They’re not that little. The oldest is already ten,” November said, a bit defensively.

One of the kids ran over and piped up, “Layla, November was already piloting mech suits when he was just three or four. We’ re seven or eight and still can’t do it. Does that mean we’ll never learn?”

Layla sighed quietly.

‘How am I supposed to explain to them that November’s the only kid in the whole universe who’s a genius like that-piloting mech suits at three or four?’ she thought.

Layla explained, “You all need to start by learning the theory first, and we’ll have to test your psychic force to see if you can actually pilot a mech suit.

“So be good and let November put the mech suits away for now. Tomorrow, we’ll test your psychic force.”
