Chapter 99 Faking A Rut

Chapter 99 Faking A Rut

After Layla and November returned to Wastelands-9 Orphan Core, Tommy and his crew didn’t dare show up again.

There were still seven days before the lease expired, but more importantly, Layla and November were there.

To be more precise, it was all those mech suits that kept them away.

After talking it over with Celia, Layla decided to rent a bigger house elsewhere on the planet, so Celia and the kids could move in first.

In six months, Layla would arrange a new place for Celia and the kids on Alpha Prime, set up a new orphanage, and come back to bring them over.

It would cost a fortune in starcoins.

November used to think Layla would spend the money he gave her. He even asked Zee privately, “Is what I gave Layla enough to start an orphanage?”

“More than enough, Atlas. Can I ask you something?” Zee replied.

“What is it?” November asked.

“Can you get Zaa to text me back, please?” Zee begged in frustration.

November shifted his gaze away from the optical computer, his face blank.

But his poker face only lasted a few seconds. As soon as Layla came over, his eyes lit up, and he rushed right over to her.

“Layla!” he called out.

Zee was totally judging Atlas for ditching him for romance and even faking to be in rut.

By now, November had already rushed over to Layla’s side. “Layla, where are you going?”

“We’re going shopping to pick up some things for Christmas,” Layla replied.

“Shopping?” November echoed.

Honestly, the concept of “shopping” had never even crossed Atlas’s mind.

Everything he needed was always taken care of by someone else. He never had to worry about whether the fridge was empty or if he had clean socks in his closet.

Even with his mask on, November’s noble air couldn’t hide the confusion in his eyes. Layla’s lips curled into a smile as she nodded, “Yeah, shopping. Wanna come?”

“I’m in,” November replied without hesitation.

These days, most folks did their shopping online, but on out-of-the-way planets like Wastelands-9, people could still find those traditional shopping districts and street markets.

With all the tech upgrades, robots and androids took over tons of jobs. But after the switch, people started noticing a big problem.

They were out of work.

So every planet made sure to preserve at least one lively commercial area, where humans and Al coexisted in the workplace. Even though Wastelands-9 was pretty backward, it still had a lively market street. Normally, it was busy, but with Christmas coming up, the place was absolutely swarming.

November was obviously out of his element in all this noise and crowd. Even with his mask on, one could tell he was way too fancy for that place. He looked totally out of place walking through the crowd.

It didn’t take long before he accidentally stomped on an old lady’s robot dog and broke it.

“Oh no! You killed my precious. You better pay for this,” the old lady shrieked. She looked downright fierce, with deep wrinkles and bulging eyes.

She was the kind of grandma who could scare kids into crying just by looking at them after dark.

Right beside her was Nancy, dressed in a white dress, holding onto the old lady’s arm and shooting Layla a death glare.” You jinx! Why do I keep running into you?”

instant.

Layla had just been picking out some decoration items for Christmas, anu with one quick turn, she hadn’t even realized what had gone down.

“November, what happened?” Layla asked.

“That robot dog almost took that kid’s arm off,” November replied. He’d been talking about kids with Layla just yesterday, and being around the orphanage kids all the time, he’d started noticing kids more lately.

Today, the market was packed, and there were kids everywhere. For some reason, November noticed that even in a rough place like Wastelands-9, every kid seemed to be smiling.

The kids at the orphanage were the same. Even though they’d all been abandoned by their parents, they were still so upbeat.

Just as November couldn’t help but keep an eye on a few of the cute little kids, a robot dog suddenly darted out from the side and lunged straight for the arm of a seven- or eight-year-old girl.

Then, November crushed the robot dog under his foot, smashing it to pieces.

Nancy already had beef with Layla, so when she saw that, she totally blew up, kicking up such a fuss that mall security had to come over.

“What on earth is going on here? Who’s causing trouble in the mall? Do you want to get locked up?” the security guards demanded.

Nobody wanted to get locked up during the holiday season, and the little girl who almost got bitten had already been whisked away by her mom, vanishing into the crowd.

November couldn’t find anyone to back him up now.

Layla took one look and instantly got what was going on. She crouched down next to the powered-down robot dog and pried its jaws open.

“This metal is razor-sharp, and with the robot dog’s powerful bite force, it could easily snap an adult’s arm. For a kid, it’d be even easier,” Layla remarked.

Nancy wasn’t about to admit it. “Just because you say so doesn’t make it true.”

“I’m a student in the Mech Engineering Division. I know this metal. If you don’t believe my words, we can get a professional to check it out,” Layla replied.

Nancy’s eyes darted around. She wasn’t scared of getting a professional involved+her dad knew tons of people anyway.

But reading her evil mind, Layla cut in, “Honestly, we don’t need to make this complicated. Nancy, just put your arm in the dog’s mouth and let’s see if it’s dangerous or not.”

“Absolutely not!” Nancy’s grandma snapped, instantly pulling her granddaughter behind her and shooting Layla a fierce glare. “Why don’t you do it yourself? Why should my Nancy be the guinea pig?”

There was a dangerous glint in November’s eyes, but he forced himself to keep his temper in check.

If this had been before, Atlas would’ve already kicked that old lady and her granddaughter out without a second thought.

But now, that wasn’t an option.

He was November now, not Prince Atlas.

November cast down his eyes, his voice quiet as he said to Layla, “Sorry, Layla. I dragged you into the trouble.”

“No worries,” Layla said, shooting November a calming look. She glanced around, then her eyes landed on the security guard’s belt.

“Excuse me, sir. That baton’s made of special metal, right?” Layla asked.

“That’s right,” the guard replied.

Layla continued, “Mind if I borrow it for a minute? If the robot dog can’t bite through your baton, I’ll apologize and pay for their robot dog.

“But if it does break the baton, then they have to pay for it and apologize to everyone here.”

Bringing a robot dog this dangerous into a crowded mall was basically putting everyone at risk.

The security guard thought it over for a second, then handed the baton to Layla.

As soon as Nancy’s grandma saw that, her expression changed in a flash. She spun around and stormed off, leaving Nancy standing there, totally confused.

Meanwhile, Layla had already jammed the baton into the robot dog’s mouth and snapped its jaw shut.

With a crisp sound, the baton snapped clean in two.

The crowd gasped. At the back, the mom of the little girl who’d almost gotten bitten by the robot dog was scared out of her

wits.

That was way too close.

Her kid almost lost her arm.
