Lilian’s POV

I had no idea what Reginald was on about. What did it matter who my parents were? What did that have to do with saving Ronan?

“The pack Gamma is my father,” I said.

“And your mother?” Reginald asked.

“She died when I was younger,” I said. “But she was just a woman from the village. She wasn’t anyone of importance.”

Grayson frowned. “Why are you asking these questions?”

Reginald’s gaze never left me. “Because,” he said. “For the help I offered to work, that boy must share blood from the Lycan Kingdom. And if you have the same parents, then you likely do too, Lillian.”

I froze. “What? How is that possible?”

“Maybe your mother wasn’t all that she seemed,” Reginald said. “I don’t know. But I encourage you to be tested, and for the boy to be tested too. There may be other methods that could work, but we’d need to know for sure that your linage is with my kingdom.”

Grayson’s arm tightened around me marginally. Reginald saw nothing else to say, and turned to go back into Ronan’s room.

“That can’t be possible,” I said.

Grayson held me. “Maybe it’s worth checking, just in case. It could at least be something to consider.”

“You can’t think that’s true,” I said.

The members of the Lycan kingdom are strong,” Grayson said. “You’ve shown shimmers of that strength. It doesn’t hurt to find out for sure, does it? Especially if it could help Ronan?”

I didn’t know what to say. I supposed that was true, but…

“Why wouldn’t my mother tell me?” I asked him, knowing he wouldn’t have the answer.

He just stared back at me with a sympathetic gaze. I knew, the only one who would be able to answer that question was my mother, and she was long gone.

Or maybe…

Teacher was friends with my mother. Could he know?

And would he tell me if he did? Teacher was ever mysterious, always hiding his own identity, his many secrets. He was the only one I could ask, but I had doubts he would give me any answers.

Even so…

Grayson held me tightly and kissed the top of my head.

“I don’t care about your lineage,” he said. “You are my wife now, part of this family.”

I closed my eyes and leaned into him. He was right. That was most important to me. This family of the two of us

was all that I needed.

But for Ronan’s sake…

Maybe we should be tested.

Odette’s POV

I sat for tea with Reginald, but he looked lost on the other side of the table. He had barely said two words to me this entire time.

“Is something wrong?” I asked him.

He didn’t seem to hear me.

“Reggie,” I said, louder.

He blinked and looked up, finally focusing on me. “Is something wrong? You are totally out of it.”

“I’m sorry,” he replied. “My mind is elsewhere.”

“Yeah. Where?”

He shrugged. “Nowhere in particular.” That seemed like a blatant lie, but one thing I knew about Reginald was that he wouldn’t speak if he didn’t want to. Sometimes it could be like trying to communicate with a statue. So for now, I let it go.

“We have to figure out a way to stop this wedding,” I said. “I know you gave your blessing, that was good cover. But we can’t let it move forward. The alliance is far too important.”

He shook his head. “Odette, I think you should let this go.”

“You can’t mean that.”

“You are holding onto this grudge against Lillian too hard. It’s not healthy for you. She isn’t all that bad.”

“You are taking her side,” I gasped. “Aren’t you supposed to be my brother? How can you take her side?”
