turned his back while I dressed.

“What will we do about the guard?” I asked.

He didn’t immediately answer. When I was dressed, I walked closer to him and saw him holding a syringe. The liquid in the vial looked similar to what he had injected into me, when he had sedated me during my wild rampage.

“Teacher,” I said, realizing what this meant. “You can’t just knock out a guard.”

“He’ll wake up in a few hours with a headache. He’ll be fine.”

“But Grayson will know it was you who did it. He’ll be furious with you.”

Teacher looked at me in his infinitely calm way. “I appreciate your worry, Lillian. But it’s unnecessary. I can handle whatever comes my way. For now, you need to do me a favor and only worry about yourself, alright? You have a tough journey in front of you.”

“The Lycan Kingdom is a long way…”

“I’m not talking about your physical journey.” He looked at me, and the words sat in my heart, a warning and a promise. “Are you ready?”

Was I? Probably not. But I didn’t have a choice. For myself, for Grayson, and for our baby, I had to be.

“I’m ready.”

Grayson’s POV

I stood in my office, staring out the window, barely able to stand with the pain tearing me apart from the inside out. My hands were locked behind my back, my fingers digging into my skin, the biting feeling taking some of the pressure off of my chest.

A few minutes ago, I had sent Prime Beta to speak with Lillian, to see if she had changed her mind yet. I didn’t trust myself to be alone with her, believing my wolf might break free or that I would simply collapse. Even the thought of seeing her, of hearing her rejection again was enough to bring me low. Only in distance did I hold on to the last of my strength.

Now, Prime Beta returned, but there was hesitation in his movements. He paused outside of the door before stepping inside.

Bad news, then.

My heart ached further.

“She said no,” I guessed when Prime Beta entered.

Prime Beta swallowed hard. “No, Alpha.”
