Lilian’s POV

The next morning, after breakfast, with the kids under the care of Tutor Stephen and a few nannies that I had come to know and trust, Grayson and I started to make our way back to the palace.

He drove in our in descript car to another secondary location where we changed back to the sleek black sedan. Once we did, the mood seemed to change, becoming more serious. Like we had been away in a dream at the mansion, and now we were waking up.

The palace was filled with dangers. We would have to be on guard every minute. In addition, we were going there with the express purpose of speaking with my father. This was not going to be an easy conversation. It was very possible that it might do more harm than good.

But before the end, I still needed to discover that for myself.

“I didn’t ask you before,” Grayson said as he drove, his eyes on the road, only glancing at me now and then. “What were you hoping to uncover in talking with Gamma? What did you want to talk to him about?” He paused. “I’m sorry if that’s too personal -”

“It’s fine,” I said. “I’ve given this a lot of thought. And I… Well, I guess I want to uncover two mysteries.”

“Two?”

“First, I want to know exactly what happened to my mother. I only know that she died. My father knows the truth. He must. And I’m hoping he will tell me before he faces his end. Even if it’s the worst possible thing imaginable, I still want to know.”

Grayson’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. “And the second mystery?”

“This one, I’m even less confident that he will answer,” I said. “But… I want to know if he ever really loved me at all. Or us, his family. He always seemed to hold a grudge for us, even my sister.”

“I’m not sure he is capable of love,” Grayson said. “I don’t believe you will get an answer that you want from him on this question. Even facing death, I doubt he will be able to face the truth of what he’s done to you and your family.”

“Maybe,” I said, suspecting that too. “But I still need to try.”

He hummed. “I’ll be by your side for all of it. The good and the bad.”

He glanced over at me and our eyes met. I smiled a little, and he did too. As we faced forward again, both of our smiles fell.

When we reached the palace, there was a crowd gathering in the driveway.
