Chapter 306
Grayson’s POV
I fought against the guards but in my weakened state, I wasn’t strong enough to hold them off or stop them from dragging me toward the block. As we neared, with the strength disparity more obvious, I stopped trying to fight and moved slowly forward inside, casting my gaze everywhere, looking for ways to escape.
There was nothing obvious. A crowd had gathered around a small stage with a block on top – likely where I was about to meet my end. Toward the border, I was sure werewolves were watching from behind the trees, but with so many bears here, any rescue attempt would be a suicide mission.
I swallowed thickly, dread climbing up my throat. I wouldn’t go down without a fight. My family needed me, as did my kingdom. But I wasn’t a coward, either. I would not be known as the frightened prince who ran away. If I was to die here, my people needed to know that I faced the end with strength and bravery.
I was pushed onto the stage and led to the block. Yet, before I was forced to kneel, the Bear King stepped onto the stage. The gathered warriors cheered loudly, many shouting praises at their king.
The Bear King took in the applause for a long time before finally raising his hand to silence the crowd.
“The wolves were already afraid of our power,” the Bear King said. “But now that we have their prince, we can fully crush their spirits.”
The crowd burst into cheers again.
A bear dressed in black, wearing a black mask over his face slowly stepped up the steps of the stage. In his hands, he carried a great axe, with a sharpened edge in the shape of a crescent moon.
The guards behind me, shoved me down, one kicking the back of my knee to ensure I fell down to my knees at the block.
As the executioner came closer, looming, axe in hand, I was shoved forward, my chest pressing down onto the cool stone, my head dangling on the other side of it.
I braced myself. It was too late to run.
My heart hammered in my chest.
Lily.
I’m sorry.
Lillian’s POV
I ran to the blacksmith’s tent, where a tall man was bringing a hammer down on a metal sword. I waited only a moment, just long enough for the blacksmith to lower his hammer and turn toward the furnace with the sword before I jumped forward and grabbed the hammer.
I placed the necklace on the anvil, lifted the heavy hammer, and then brought it down as hard as I could, on the pendant. It creaked, a small line forming.
“Hey! What are you doing?”
Knowing I wouldn’t have a second chance, I lifted the hammer again and slammed it down on the necklace.
The crack grew larger, crackling down the center of the pendant.

It wasn’t enough. It was still intact.
he blacksmith stole the hammer away from my hand and shoved me out of his tent.
“Who do you think you are?” he growled.
Louder, Teacher’s voice in my head urged, Get to Grayson. Now.
Not wasting a moment, I turned and started to run.
I will protect you, Teacher said in my mind. Do not let him fall.
Faster.
Faster.
I moved as quickly as I could, pushing through the gathered crowd, trying to get to the stage, to Grayson, to save the love of my life, before that executioner’s axe could fall.
And the executioner was there, axe ready, lifting.
My heart leapt.
And so did I.
Time seemed to slow down, at least for the rest of the world. I was still running at regular speed, leaping from wide shoulder to wide shoulder of the bears. They didn’t seem to notice, and I didn’t seem to care.
I moved with a speed and agility that I didn’t know I possessed, moving faster, seeing only my target, my love, as the axe started to come down.
