Chapter 325
Lillian’s POV
Panic flooded my chest.
Benedict hadn’t just betrayed our friendship, he was likely insane. The way he looked now, so crazed, so unlike the calm and collected man I knew. It was like he was someone else entirely. But which side of him had been the real one, the man I knew or this man, who seemed trapped between two decisions he hated, unable to make a decision.
His fingers were around my neck, but he hadn’t started squeezing yet. The more he hesitated, the more I wondered if I might have a chance to save myself.
“Ben, you don’t have to do this.”
“You heard her,” he said. “You know I do.”
“We are friends. We’ve always been friends.”
“You don’t know the things I’ve done, Lily,” Benedict said. “I can’t just switch sides. I’ve caused too much harm. I’ve thrown myself entirely in with the Queen. Even if Grayson allowed me into his good graces, I couldn’t expect forgiveness. I don’t deserve it, after what I’ve done.”
“What have you done?” I asked him.
“My brother…” He didn’t finish that sentence, and I worried that Benedict might have been the one to actually end the King, likely at the Queen’s command. The guilt in his face was almost painful to see.
“Please, Ben. Just let me go. My children… they need me. I have to stay alive, if only for them.”
His fingers tightened slightly around my neck. “You should have taken my offer,” he said. “We could have left all of this behind, and have been free of it.”
Tears filled my eyes. I had the distinct feeling he wasn’t going to let me go. As I closed my eyes, the tears dripped down, one at a time over my cheeks. Eyes closed, I waited for the end.
“My children,” I whispered, so sad that I wouldn’t get to see them grow up.
Ben’s hands were cold on my neck.
I waited for the squeeze that would end me.
Grayson’s POV
I paced back and forth in the dining room, where Prime Beta and my advisors had gathered. Prime Beta was still filthy from the dungeons, and others were still wearing their clothes from the funeral. I had called this meeting to order as soon as we arrived at the mansion, and I wasn’t going to allow anyone to leave it until we had a plan to get Lillian back – now.
The meeting dragged on, with no one coming up with a satisfactory plan. I still wanted to just rush the gates and take back what’s mine. Stealing away someone’s mate was a vile offense. It went against the every werewolf code.
