298 An Awkward Moment

In Duskmire, within the towering headquarters of EX Investment Company, Andrew handed over the documents he had just reviewed to Joc.
“Who prepared these two reports?” Andrew asked, his voice calm yet carrying an edge. “Make sure they redo them. If something like this is submitted again, they’ll be shown the door.”
Joe took the papers silently, offering no response.
“Mr. Foster, the Whitewood Group is facing a crisis.”
Andrew’s gaze, which had been fixed on the computer screen, lifted. His eyes met Joe’s.

Joe had always known that Andrew still had a vested interest in the Whitewood Group. If the company found itself in trouble, and if Andrew intervene, it was certain he could easily bring Seraphina into his orbit.
“The Whitewood Group purchased land in the harbor zone, but beneath it lies a massive ancient tomb. For reasons unknown, the company concealed it and began illegal excavation. Now, Oberon has been arrested, and the land has been sealed off entirely.”
Andrew had long suspected that the Whitewood Group, though outwardly impressive, lacked substance. Now, with this scandal breaking and the project at a standstill, the entire company was on the verge of collapse.
Andrew’s fingers lightly tapped the desk as his mind wandered back to Seraphina’s words. A faint, knowing smile curved at the corners of his lips.
Had she known about the tomb beneath the land? That seemed unlikely.
Perhaps the Whitewood Group had known all along, quietly digging for something hidden beneath.
This was becoming interesting.
Joe spoke again, his voice tinged with anticipation. “Mr. Foster, if we approach Miss Seraphina now, it would be much easier than before.”
Andrew shook his head, his expression thoughtful. “She’s not as simple as you think.”
With the Whitewood Family in disarray, all eyes were on them, waiting to see if the Whitewood Group could weather the storm. Yet, more than a few were focused on the Drakon and Foster families, eager to see if either would extend a lifeline.
The air was thick with speculation and anticipation.
“Seraphina, do you think you should ask my uncle for help?” Evelyn called. Her tone was equal parts concern and curiosity.
“There’s no need. Absolutely not,” Seraphina replied, her voice firm and resolute. “This disaster is entirely the Whitewood Group’s doing. They should face whatever consequences come their way.”

“What about your family’s company, though?” Evelyn pressed gently.

“Don’t worry about it. Everything’s under control.” Seraphina’s tone softened, though she quickly shifted the topic. “By the way, where has your uncle been lately?”
Evelyn laughed, a teasing note slipping into her voice. “Why the sudden interest in my uncle? Could it be you’ve developed… ulterior motives?”
Seraphina rolled her eyes, though there was a faint smile at the corners of her lips. “Stop it. I’m asking about
work.”
“Well, if you’re hoping to see him, you’ll have to wait. He’s been stationed in Bloomington for weeks now. One of the companies ran into a serious mess, and he’s been putting out fires nonstop. It’ll be at least another two weeks before he’s back.”
That was precisely the answer Seraphina had hoped for.
Her biggest concern was that someone in the Whitewood Family would try to exploit their tenuous connection to the Drakon family and beg for help. That simply couldn’t be allowed to happen.
As if reading her mind, the Whitewood Family indeed made their way to Jason. Unable to reach him, they turned to Seraphina instead.
In the softly lit living room stood Jane with an expression that mingled frustration and desperation. His voice carried a pleading edge. “Miss Seraphina, could you possibly reach out to Mr. Jason and ask him to step in? We really need his help.”
Seraphina’s shoulders slumped slightly, her expression crumpling into one of practiced heartbreak. A delicate sheen of tears welled in her eyes as her voice wavered with emotion. “The moment I heard about the trouble, I called him,” she whispered. “I thought… I thought he was someone dependable. Someone I could count on. But now, when it truly matters, he… he just isn’t there!”
Her voice broke, and a single tear slid down her cheek. “I never imagined he would let me down like this. I’m so disappointed.”
Jane’s gaze flickered, caught between her apparent anguish and something in the periphery. His eyes widened as they fixed on the figure that had appeared behind her without a sound.
Still feigning distress, Seraphina noticed the shift in Jane’s expression. Her brow furrowed slightly as she turned to see what had captured his attention.
There, leaning casually in the doorway, stood Jason. His tall frame exuded quiet authority, and the faint smirk on his face hinted at amusement.
“Seraphina,” he drawled, his tone equal parts teasing and cool. “I didn’t realize you were so upset. Need a
hand?”
Her breath caught.
The tears that had poised so perfectly on her lashes froze in place, and Seraphina stood utterly still, the facade of sorrow wavering as a wave of embarrassment washed over her.
