Evie’s pov
My stomach dropped so violently I thought I might actually throw up. “H-e wh-at?” My voice came out sharp and breathless as panic suffocated my chest.
Lisa blinked at my reaction while Gavin’s expression immediately shifted with understanding. He must’ve realized exactly where my mind went because his face softened slightly and he stepped forward to block my path.
His hands grasp my shoulders. “Evie,” Gavin said carefully and gently. “Breathe.”
But I couldn’t. I fucking couldn’t.
Every horrible fear I’d buried years ago came crashing back all at once. The fear that Ryan would somehow get to know I had his son and would come to take him from me. That I would wake up one day and my son would be gone.
Serena whimpered anxiously inside me. ‘I don’t think he’d do that…..right?’
I don’t answer her because I can’t.
“Where did he take him?” I demanded quickly, trying to shove past Gavin as panic clawed its way up my throat and made it difficult to even breathe. “Where is Atlas?!”
Lisa looked genuinely confused by my reaction. “Evie, calm down. Ryan just took him out for ice cream after he had breakfast because Atlas demanded it.”
Ice cream.
The words barely registered through the roaring panic in my ears. “You let him leave with Atlas?” I whispered in horror.” Alone? What if……what if he,” I swallowed, unable to get my words together.
Gavin tightened his hold on my shoulders slightly. “Evie, Ryan isn’t going to hurt him. They just went out for ice cream. They will be back soon.”
My chest heaved harder. “He should’ve told me,” I choked out. “He should’ve woken me up. Why didn’t he wake me up?”
Lisa’s expression softened with realization. “Evie…”
But I was already shaking my head. “He doesn’t understand,” I whispered more to myself than them. “Atlas is all I have…..”
Gavin’s grip on my shoulder tightened a little harder. ” Trust him Evie….trust him,” he squeezed my shoulder. “They will be back soon. No need for the panic.”
Deep down, I knew Gavin was right and that I could trust Ryan but my past fears kept my mind clouded. The distant sound of a vehicle approaching echoed outside and I took a whiff. The scent of both Ryan and Atlas reaches my nose.
‘He didn’t take him,’ Serena sighed.
My head snapped toward the front doors instantly and before Gavin or Lisa could stop me, I shoved past them and sprinted outside barefoot just as the red Lamborghini rolled to a stop in front of the pack house.
The second the windows rolled down to reveal Atlas, his eyes find mine. “Mommy!”
Relief hit me so fiercely that it nearly made me crumble to my knees. I rushed forward immediately just as Ryan stepped around the vehicle holding a small container of melting ice cream, while Atlas climbed out of the vehicle. Chocolate was smeared messily around his mouth.
The moment I reached Atlas, I scooped him into my arms and held him so tightly he squeaked. “Mommy,” he giggled breathlessly. “You’re going to break me.”

I ignored those words completely and buried my face in his dark curls for a second, inhaling his scent desperately while my heart started to slow back into a calmer pace.
Only when I knew Atlas was truly here did I look up, straight at Ryan. The warm smile he had on his face slowly starts to fade as his brows furrow into confusion. “You scared me,” I said shakily, my voice a bit harsher than I intended but I couldn’t stop now. “Why would you take him without telling me?”
“I didn’t mean to scare you Evie,” he said immediately, coming forward but decided to halt as if afraid I’d not want him any
closer.
“You left with my son while I was asleep,” I snapped, clutching Atlas tighter instinctively. “Do you have any idea what I thought when I woke up and he was gone?!”
Ryan’s eyes saddened. “I hadn’t meant to make you worry. You were sleeping so peacefully that I didn’t want to wake you up,” his eyes fell to Atlas. ” After making him breakfast, he wanted ice cream. We didn’t have in the fridge and I thought a little drive would be fun,” he raised his hand in his hair and scratched the back of his head nervously.
“I’m sorry Evie,” he whispered, looking apologetic. “I didn’t think you’d be so alarmed. You know I wouldn’t hurt him or take him away from you.
‘Oh Evie he’s truly sorry,’ Serena sighs, feeling guilty for being so concerned. I will admit I feel guilty too.
Ryan truly looked devastated that he had scared me. His shoulders were tense, his eyes pained and apologetic as he stared at both Atlas and me like he was terrified of losing our trust….scared he’d lose us.
And goddess…..I knew Ryan. It’s not like I didn’t know him. I knew he would never intentionally hurt Atlas. My fear had simply swallowed me whole before logic could catch up.
Atlas looked between us with wide eyes before saying softly. “Mommy got angry?”
Ryan let out a shaky breath. “Yeah,” He murmured softly. “Daddy messed up.”
The honesty in his voice sliced away the last pieces of my anger instantly. I let out a shaky breath of my own and lifted Atlas on my hip as I looked at Ryan. “You really should’ve told me,” I said softly.
Ryan nodded. “I know. It was wrong of me not to. I’m still learning Evie. I’m not perfect,” his eyes peer at our son.” But I won’t ever hurt our son or you.”
I knew he was telling the truth. I could hear it in his voice. “I’m sorry too,” I admitted, flushing a bit. “I panicked. I trust you, it’s just that my fear just got the better of me for a second.”
Ryan’s expression softened. “You don’t ever have to apologize for panicking about our son,” he said gently.
Ryan hesitated before walking up to me and then carefully reaching out to brush a strand of messy hair behind my ear. “I’ll always tell you next time,” he promised softly.
My mouth parted to respond but before I could, several loud vehicles suddenly screeched into the front driveway My entire body stiffened instantly. Ryan’s expression darkened immediately as three black vans pulled up aggressively near the pack house
