Evie’s pay

The words land on my chest brutally and a shaloy gang leaven my thitusl

“She’s no one,” he continues. “Wipe her off the face of this earth. Kill her:

kill her

Like it was nothing more than an annoyance that could be discarded. My ears ring so loudly I can barely hear muy own breath and my knees start to give out but hands clasp my arms to hold me up. The pain I felt was strong,

Serena erupts inside me, snarling. ‘We won’t die weak. Straighten your spine!1

I try to, Goddess I try to but the sinking feeling in my chest alone is weighing me down.

Gavin is silent. The entire room is. But Gavin is silent but looking right at me. Staring with a look that I can’t read but I know he is studying me as those grey eyes rake over my trembling frame.

Then his eyes flicker back to mine and he utters coldly. “I believe you’ve forgotten yourself there for a second Storme,” his tone is good but it holds that mockery edge that I know would irritate Ryker.

“I beg your pardon?” Storme asked with an edge of surprise.

“You do not give execution orders on my land.” Gavin hisses. The power he has shakes the entire room.

“Then you do as you wish with the fucking bitch!” Storme snaps. “Don’t call me about her anymore just keep her off my land!”

With that the line went dead and silence overtakes the room. Until it doesn’t when the leader from the four in the forest speaks up. “We can bring this to the council. Have Storme pay-

“No,” Gavin cuts in. “There’s no need to involve the council,” his grey eyes flicker back to me and his eyes narrow. “Do you want to call your parents before your fate is decided?”

My parents? The very same parents who were ashamed of me and even went as far as to demand I not regard them as such?

They don’t even care about me. What would be the point in calling them? They’d only agree with Ryker and Ryan. That I should be dead.

I shake my head slowly, the movernent is small but it was noticeable.

“No,” I whisper, my voice barely carries. “There’s no one to call,”

Gavin studies me for a long moment, his gaze sharp but he doesn’t have that edge of coldness in those depths anymore. Something flickers there perhaps understanding or….pity.

“So be it,” he says at last and turns to the wolves, “She stays and will be under my protection until I figure out what to do with her.”

The one who was behind me on the wolf takes a cautious step forward, brows drawn into a furrow of uncertainty. Are you sure about that Gavin? She can be dangerous,” his head lowers a bit and so does his voice.” Besides she’s a white woll. Can they truly be trusted? Especially around an alpha?”

My heart races as I wait for Gavin’s response. The man was right. A white wolf matches that of the power of an alpha. if they wanted to, they can challenge the alpha for title. They’re also rare wolves, not many are alive

anymore.

Gavin nods at the man. “I’m very sure Jonah. Besides it’s rare to even come across a white wolf,” his eyes return to mine and he raises a brow. “I am intrigued to see what she has up her sleeves.”

“But Gavin-

Gavin raises his hand to silence him. You’re my beta Jonah, not my leader. You do as I say.”

Jonah bows his head and tilt his head to bare his neck. “Yes alpha.”

“Give her a room in the east wing,” Gavin continues. “Somewhere far from the others. She’s to remain on the grounds until further notice. No one touches her without my permission.”

“Yes, Alpha,” all wolves respond in unison.

His eyes return to me one last time.” This is temporary,” he says calmly. “Do not mistake my protection for mercy. You will be watched closely.”

I nod, swallowing hard. Even though this is temporary, at least I am promised protection and I am not executed…

yet.

They lead me away not long after his words. We walk past curious eyes and hushed murmurs. Murmurs that question why I was not being placed in a dungeon. I question that too of course, but silently in my head. Not daring to utter a word to the wolves in case I get in their last nerves. They were already sparing me and that alone is enough.

The walk was long and by the time I’m ushered into a modest but warm room, my legs feel like they might finally give out. “This is your assigned room until the alpha says otherwise,” Jonah utters when the other two wolves release me and step out of the room. He stays, watching me like a hawk as I glance at the room.

A decent sized bed. Cream walls and a small desk just under the only window in the room. I glanced at the chair and to my surprise I see clean clothes folded neatly on it. They must’ve made someone to bring me some fresh clothes.

“You can shower in here,” he points at the only other door I presume leads to a bathroom. “You reek.”

I snap my gaze to him, flushing in embarrassment. Well damn, no need to be kind then.

‘He’s lucky he’s a beta,’ Serena snaps. ‘I’d knock him down on his ass.’

‘Okay calm down.’ I hushed her.

With a twitch of his lip that surprises me, Jonah leaves the room and the door closes gently behind him. For the first time today I can finally…sigh.

Though I know I am not really off the hook yet and there is a potential that I may still end up being executed but for now I am safe. Safe from them. And that alone is relieving. With a nothing exhale, I head for the shower.

I don’t remember when I fell asleep, I only remember after I got dressed in the comfy clothes and plopped on the bed, I was out like a light.

A sharp knock jolts me awake. I gasp, bolting upright, my heart racing wildly. Did they come to take me to get executed now?

“Oh! You’re awake…good!” The door swings open before I can even respond and a girl my age bursts in like a ray

of sunlight crashing into a storm.

She’s… smiling. Brightly. A little too brightly.

Wide grin, warm grey eyes, dark hair pulled into a messy braid that bounces as she walks. She carries a tray stacked with food and practically hums as she sets it down.

“I was worried you’d sleep all day,” she chirps. “First shifts are brutal. Trust me.”

I blink at her. Once. Twice. Three times. Am I still dreaming?

“Who are you?” I ask cautiously as my brows pinch into a questioning furrow.

She gasps, eyes widening as if I had insulted her as her hand fly to her chest. ” How rude. I bring food and this is how I’m treated?”
