Evie’s pov
My breath leaves my throat in a sharp gasp
Two minutes.
The clock ticks loudly in the silence of the room Each second striking like the end of a nail against my skull My mouth opens but no word comes out. Fear has wrap it light ngly fingers around my throat
“Speak,” Gavin commands, his voice causing my spine to straighten and for my wolf to perk in attention. I force myself to inhale to somehow fight for a calming breath
My voice cracks and I wince inwardly. Time is ticking. I needed to speak quickly. I swallow hard and try again. “My name is Evie. I belonged to the Silver Blood pack.”
His gaze sharpens instantly.
“Belonged,” he repeats as a brow flicker up in question.
“Yes,” I whisper. “I was the alpha’s mate.”
A flicker of surprise lit his features but he quickly conceals it as if he didn’t want me to see it. “And now?”he
presses.
I lower my gaze for half a second in shame before lifting it again, refusing to let myself look too weak. “He rejected me. I run away unable to stay while he claims another. He then ordered his warriors to hunt me down. I stumble on your territory when I was being hunted down.”
The clock ticks. I flick my eyes to it briefly.
One minute and thirty seconds.
The room grows colder.
“Why?” Gavin asks. “Alphas do not discard mates without a reason. Alphas need their mates.”
Pain slices through my chest, raw and fresh. “Because I was human and weak,” I say softly. “He couldn’t lead with someone like me.”
His eyes narrow. “You seem to have shifted fine back there in my woods,” he tilts his head and studies me for a few moments before continuing. “How old are you?”
My hands curl into fists at my sides as I look away. “Eighteen.”
The word hangs heavily in the air before Gavin repeats. “Eighteen?” He tasted the word slowly as if in disbelief.” You shifted at eighteen?”
The wolves looked at each other in confusion also. My gaze drops to the floor before his next words made me snap them back up, “The Silver Blood alpha and I are not on good terms but seeing as one of their own stumbled on my territory I will have to confirm with him that you are not a criminal. ”
My mouth runs dry as he walks to his desk and dials the alpha’s number. My heart pounds in my chest wondering which alpha he’d get on the line.

Ryan? Or his dad?
Ryan was probably still with Kimberly. They were probably tangled up in the sheets without a care in the world. Perhaps even rejoicing that he’d never see my face again. The little puppy would never follow him around
anymore.
The thought made my heart squeeze but I push it to the back of my mind. Thinking about the hurt would only make me feel worse.
Gavin looks at me when he puts the call on speaker and we all listen to the phone ring twice before Ryan’s dad voice drifts through the room.
“Gavin.” He said stiffly. “What is it that you want?”
I tense up.
Gavin’s jaw locks. “One of your own has stumbled upon my land Storme,” his voice is firm and cold, causing shivers to rush down my spine. “A female. Claims to be named Evie and also claims to have been an alphas mate, which I suppose would be your son’s mate.”
The line goes silent for a bit before Ryan’s dad lets out a low snort. “Oh that wolf less bitch,”
I flinch, almost stumbling back if one of the wolves didn’t reach out to steady me. He must have thought I was about to run away.
“Ryan doesn’t want her,” he continues. “She’s a liability. Practically useless, Ryan wanted her dead and gone last night. I’m sorry our incompetent warriors were unable to rid of such trash before it stained your doors.”
