Evie’s pov

When we stepped outside the sun blazed on our skin. I narrow my eyes, looking around. The area was clear of anyone but I could hear loud shouts and sounds coming from a little further into the woods.

Quincy tighten her grip on mine as if trying to reassure me that everything would be fine even though it felt like I was walking to my own death sentence.

“The kids are usually at school during this time and the women who aren’t interested in fighting are usually doing house chores and preparing the meals. We’re like a family here,” Quincy suddenly says, her voice light. It was like she was trying to distract me from my obvious fear and anxiety.

“Oh,” she suddenly utters in an exaggerated breath, catching my attention instantly. “I forgot to tell you about me. I’m seventeen by the way. Gavin’s sister but you already knew that one. Ummm I-

“Would you stop telling a complete stranger about your life story Quincy?” Jonah mutters ahead of us, tone strained.” She could still be an enemy who was sent here.”

Quincy glares at the back of his head. “I’m trying to distract my friend,” she stresses on the word friend. “Seeing as you’re scaring her.”

Jonah whips around to give her a hard stare, one she reflects back at him. He opens his mouth to say something but I cut in timidly. “Why don’t we just all get to the training grounds without any arguments?”

Jonah shoots me an irritated glare before turning around to continue his walk. Quincy lets out a huff, glaring at him.” See what I’m talking about? Has a stick far up his ass,” she says lowly.

I know Jonah heard her and she does too but she doesn’t care and Jonah doesn’t care to respond this time.

‘She’s a funny one,’ Serena snorts.

It took us five minutes to reach a huge clearing where many wolves were scattered around. Some were sparing while others were running around. In the middle stood Gavin, tall and brooding.

The second we enter the clearing Gavin spotted us but he wasn’t the only one. Everyone else did too. Heads move in our direction and even those who were sparring slowed down to look.

They weren’t looking at Quincy or Jonah beside me. No. Their gazes were on me and me only. Just like yesterday when Jonah and the others brought me to Gavin. They stared then too, but with more curiosity than before.

They were probably wondering why Gavin called me here. They were just as confused as I was.

Their open glares made me become so aware of how tiny I was amongst them and I shifted on my feet nervously.

Quincy gives me a sudden reassuring squeeze. “Told you we are one big family. Nosy as hell,” she jokes, trying to ease my discomfort as her brother barks at everyone to continue what they were doing.

Gavin then stalks over to us and my throat suddenly grows dry. Thehe eats up the distance, the more I am very aware of his towering frame. He was just as tall as Ryan,

The moment Gavin is in front of us, Jonah leaves our side and moves to Gavin’s side without being told. Quincy on the other hand, hesitates a little but one stare at her brother and she reluctantly releases me and takes a few steps

back.

I give her a slightly panicked stare but she send me a reassuring smile in return,

I’m alone.

I turn to give Gavin my full attention, a tingle of slight fear rubbing down my spine as I sense his power.

Serena’s voice suddenly drifts into my mind. ‘We’ve always been alone, this ain’t something new’

She was right.

I straighten up and keep my hands to my sides as I wait for Gavin’s next move. But he just stares, his way raking over me. Not in that creepy way but in a way that made me become too aware of how weak I was compared to him.

“You slept,” he states dryly. Did he not expect me to? Maybe he thought being in a new place and being scared would keep me up all night.

I nod. “Yes, I did.” My voice is quiet but he heard.

“Have you eaten any breakfast?” He questions and my brows furrow in confusion. Why was he asking these questions? I’d not expect him to care about it.

I shook my head but before I could respond Quincy beat me to it. “Well your beta over here didn’t give her a chance to.”

Jonah glares at her but Quincy only huffs. “What? Did I lie?” She continues but her brother gives her a warning glare and she stops..

Gavin puts his attention back on me, his head tilting. “Good. That way I can see how you do without having enough energy.”

My pinch even more, completely confused by his words. Then he gestures with his chin and one of the wolves drags a heavy looking staff towards us. My stomach clenches when he drops it at my feet and it falls to the ground with a dull thud.

“Gavin-

Quincy starts but he tells her to keep quiet which she obliges. I look at the staff on the ground, my heart pounding into my ears.

“Pick it up,” Gavin ordered and the little hairs on the back of my neck stands up.

“I don’t know how to fight,” I tell him quickly in one breath as I bend to pick up the staff. It was indeed heavy.

“I know,” he replies dryly. “You’ve mentioned you were the weakest in your pack.”

His words had me flushing with embarrassment as I hear a few snickers ripple from the wolves around.

Great. I’m a laughingstock here too.

“But that was before you shifted into your white wolf,” he continues, staring at me as though he was trying to read me.” I want to know if you’re a liability here.”

His words sting, Liability. The word I’ve heard so many times being spat at me.

Jonah crosses his arms. “Alpha, what if she loses control of her wolf?”

Gavin spares him a glance before pinning me down once more with his stare. “Then I’ll put her down.”

My heart stutters.
