Evie’s pov

“Evie!” Quincy’s voice cuts through the air.

“Stay back!” Jonah hisses at her as he stares at me head on.

Serena surges harder, faster. My muscles coil with unfamiliar strength, claws ripping through my nails as they extend. I feel powerful and that was a terrifying feeling.

Jonah’s eyes flash as he shifts his stance and he looks like is ready to strike me down. I see it in the way his shoulders roll and in the way his jaw clenched.

‘Stop it Serena!’ I yelled just as my claws hit the air. Jonah had sidestepped me in time. ‘If we hurt him we would not show we are powerful,’

‘We hurt him and they will respect us!’ She snarls as she lashes for Jonah again. This time her nails caught skin and I watch in horror at the back of my own eyes.

Blood beads instantly where my claws have ripped through skin on Jonah’s arm. He looks at me surprised, stumbling back. And then he…snarls. Loud. Loud enough for me to be alerted that he now sees me as a threat.

Jonah straightens slowly, shoulders squaring as a deep snarl pushes out of his chest. We locked gazes and now his eyes burn blue with no trace of mockery left in them. Only anger and challenge.

The air thickens around us.

My heart slams violently against my ribs. He looked like he was ready to murder me.

‘No,’ I whisper, panic clawing its way up my throat. ‘This isn’t what we are.’

‘This is what they wanted,’ Serena snaps. ‘He wanted to see if we were a liability. I’m showing them we are not!’

‘You do this and we risk making Ryan win,’ I whisper. ‘I don’t want to die here Serena. I don’t want them to win. This can be our second chance at life.’

The sudden mention of our ex mate made her freeze. Which leads her open to have Jonah attack us. He lunges forward, snarling loudly, claws drawn but before he could do us any damage, a large body comes between us.

Jonah skids to a halt, slamming into Gavin’s hand that’s pressed against his chest to stop him. “Enough.”

A ripple of tension shudders through the clearing. And the wolves begin to murmur.

Gavin stands between us, his broad back facing me, one hand pressed flat against Jonah’s chest. Jonah is still hissing low, his eyes colliding with mine over Gavin’s shoulder.

Jonah’s snarl deepens, lips peeling back from his teeth to flash me a sneer. “She attacked me!” he spits, blue eyes blazing. “She lost control of her wolf like I told you she would. White wolves can’t control themselves! They are risky to have in the pack!”

Gavin’s voice stays calm as he responds. “And that’s exactly what I wanted to happen,” he drops his hand from Jonah’s chest and turn to face me. “I wanted to see if she would.”

The power still coils under my skin, hot and restless, claws half retracted and my bones still aching from where the shift stalled. Serena is silent now. Quiet after mentioning Ryan.

Jonah’s jaw tightens. “She’s unstable. She can’t even control her wolf.”

Quincy steps forward then, unable to hold back any longer. “You’re just salty that you almost got your teeth knocked back in,” she snaps at Jonah, her eyes flashing. “You shouldn’t have taunted her and treated her like she’s some kind of enemy.”

Jonah’s gaze flicks to Quincy, then back to Gavin. “She is an enemy. She’s from a neighboring pack that we never got along with. Who’s to say this was not all planned?”

Quincy rolls her eyes and crosses her arms over her chest. “You and your conspiracies. The girl was rejected and hunted down like she was some kind of prey. It’s a miracle she was even able to escape.”

Jonah looks displeased. ” If she can’t control her wolf then that just means she’s a danger to the pack.”

My throat tightens and I looked down at the ground. He was right. If I couldn’t control Serena I would be a danger to everyone around me. What she did earlier by taking over my body scared me.

Losing control like that terrified me in ways I didn’t think was possible.

I swallow hard, shame now weighing me down. “I didn’t want to hurt you. I-

“You were reckless.” Jonah cuts in sharply.

Serena stirs faintly. ‘I’m sorry Evie,’ she says, her voice softer now and losing that angry edge. ‘I was only trying to protect us. I don’t want us to look weak anymore.’

‘I know,’ I whisper to her. I couldn’t be mad at her, not when she was a part of me.

Gavin suddenly turns to me fully then, eyeing me. “You got control back on your own,” he voiced. “Without me commanding you,” his head tilts.” Seems to me she has more control than we think Jonah.”
