Evie’s pov

The second I stepped out of the filling room Quincy’s giddy face greeted me. Her grin was wide, so bright the corners of her mouth nearly touched her ears.

“Oh you look so lovely!” She squeals, motioning me to do a twirl.

I can’t help but smile as I give in and turn around. The fabric of the dress brushes along my body and ends just above my knees. A very pretty flowered dress.

“This is so your color!” She squeals and then pushes another hanger into my hands. “Next.” She bounced on her heels, clapping her hands in excitement.

I looked at her concerned. We’ve already bought a lot of stuff. So much that the back of her car is full of shopping bags. “Quincy, I think that’s enough-

“Enough?” Quincy gasped as if she was insulted, “Girl I’ll tell you when it’s enough. Now get your cute self inside the dressing room to try those on. Besides we need to get you a dress for my incoming birthday party.”

My eyes flicker to her in surprise. “Birthday party?”

She nods. “Yeah. It’s in a few days,” suddenly Quincy’s chirpy tone lowers to one of nerves as her teeth captures her lower lip. “I’ll be turning eighteen.”

“The age you find out who’s your mate.” I whisper, now understanding her sudden change of emotion. Every female wolf grows nervous as their eighteenth birthday draws close.

My mind suddenly drifts to him, Ryan…..and my heart aches.

Quincy nods, staring at me nervously. “I just-1

Her gaze lowered for a few moments before she lifts it back up. This time gone are the nerves and is replaced by her usual chirpiness. “Anyway, enough about my birthday. Go on in!” She urges, shooing me away into the fitting

room.

I let out a surprised exhale as she pushes me in. “Wait but I-

She shuts the blinds that blocked me off from her and I sigh. Why was she inviting me to her special day? We’ve just met, I don’t understand how she opened her arms-

‘She trust you,’ Serena says cutting into my words. I can sense it. I don’t think we have to worry about her.’

As I try on one of the dresses she gave me, the words on the ty that was in the waiting area catches my attention.

“And now with big news. A joyous announcement from the Storme family,” the reporter said with glee in her

tone. The voice drifted through the thin walls of the fitting room and I freeze.

My heart stops.

The TV must’ve been turned up at some point because the words are a lot louder now. Or maybe…..my attention was just now more solely on it.

“We go live now to Alpha Ryker Storme,” her voice is growing chirpier by the second. “Who has a very important announcement to make regarding the future of the Silver Blood pack.”

My hands go cold and my heart races so fast my vision blurs a little. I took in a shaky breath, the dress I had to

finish out on myself long forgotten.

I press my hand flat on the thin wall, sweat tickling the back of my neck. The curtain rustles slightly as I step closer and through the gap I peek and see the mounted television.

Before it is Quincy who looks shocked but I don’t focus on her. No I focus on the man now in the frame, Ryker Storme. Ryan’s father. The man who told Gavin to kill me last night.

He stands tall and proud, a huge grin showing off his pearly white as he lifts his hand to brush his fingers through the light dust of silver streaks at the sides of his head. He looks just like Ryan. The older version.

Serena stirs within me.

“It brings me great pride to announce,” Ryker says smoothly, his wife and Luna strolling up to him and stops. beside him. “The engagement of my son, Ryan Storme-

My knees weaken and I find myself slowly falling to my knees as my heart thrums hard and loudly. “To his chosen mate, Kimberly Gold.”

And then the screen switches. Now standing tall and proud is Ryan….. with Kimberly tucked to his side. My breath shatters in my chest.

His arm is wrapped around Kimberly’s waist as her head tilts to smile up at him. Her fingers lift to showcase the glistening ring on her finger and then I spot it….the fresh mark on her neck. Claimed.

The little piece of the heart I thought I had left…shatters.

He’s smiling at her with the same smile I thought he’d only give me.

Serena lets out a broken sound inside me. It was like a whine of pain.

Kimberly burst with a gleeful laugh and stares at him like she had won everything. And she did.

I knew that day would come. It was inevitable but seeing it now….shatters me beyond repair. He had chosen her. And he had to. But still-

“This union will strengthen our pack. The engagement ceremony will be held this week and all alphas around the world will be invited-

I can’t listen anymore, a broken sob rips out of my throat and I lift my hand to my chest, clutching where my heart beats painfully.
