Evie’s pov
It’s been a few days of training and I’ve gotten better. Alpha Gavin was a bit surprised when I told him I wanted to train to be a warrior. Seeing as it was rare for a woman to become one, I wasn’t upset that he questioned me a lot about it.
But after a few questioning, he agreed to it as long as he saw improvement. And that he did.
I didn’t stop training. I even trained at nights, running my body tired every single day until I was bruised and Serena would beg me to rest so she could heal me. I didn’t want to give up. I wouldn’t.
Tonight was supposed to be different though. Quincy practically dragged me to her house for what she proudly called a sleepover party. It was supposed to be some fancy party but she in her words ‘didn’t feel up to it anymore’ so she settled for a sleepover party instead. I didn’t have the heart to say no to her.
She had been excited about it for days, bouncing around the house like someone on crack. I couldn’t let her down, especially not after everything she has done for me… In some way I owed her this.
I’m dressed in some pink pajama set she bought me the day we went shopping for clothes and I was just putting my hair into a ponytail when she enters my room. I whipped around alarmed. Not because of her sudden appearance but because she was huffing and puffing like she had just ran a marathon.
My brows furrowed as I rush over to her. “What’s wrong?”
Her face is flushed, eyes darting around the room. I’m worried as I pull her to my bed and let her plop down.” Quincy?”
She was already dressed in the prettiest of blue pajamas but her hair was messy. It looks like she ran her fingers through it many times.
Her eyes finally flick up to mine after asking her what’s wrong for the third time. “I’m turning eighteen at midnight tonight.”
I can hear her pulse in her chest. The beating of her heart was sharp and fast and her eyes, they swim with panic. I, I don’t know what to do. I- I might find out who’s my mate tonight and I just-
She stops and lets out a nervous breath, her eyes tearing from mine to look at the flooring. “I have a confession to make.”
My heart skips slightly and I come to sit just beside her. “A confession?” I repeated gently and she nods, chewing on her bottom lip. The nervousness that rolled off her was choking.
“You can’t judge me,” she says softly, her fingers now twiddling together in her lap. I’ve never seen her this nervous before since we met. She was always so bubbly and cheerful.
“I won’t.” I promised, reaching for her nervous twisting fingers and give them a reassuring squeeze.
She lifts her eyes then and stared at me as though she was trying to see if she believes me or not. But then she sighs and looks away while uttering. “I am afraid my mate won’t be Jonah.”
My jaw nearly drops on the floor. For the few days I’ve been here I did notice the tension between the two and the way Quincy has been flushing in his presence despite their bickering. But to have her basically confess to liking him caught me off guard.
She blushes when she catches my bewildered stare. “I also have another confession. Jonah and I have this…..thing

going on between us for a while now. My brother doesn’t know. He would kill him if he knows.”
My eyes widen slightly. I’m a little surprised the two had something going on, especially with Jonah’s brooding ways and Quincy’s bubbly personality. However they do look like a cute couple. I can’t help but smile.
“That explains why you always blush around him,” I tease, knocking my shoulder with hers lightly. The nervous swirl in her gaze lightens a bit as she giggles.
“Is it that obvious?” She breathed airily.
“Oh it is.” I snorted and she throws herself back on the bed and stares up at the ceiling.
“What if he’s not my mate Evie? What if when midnight strikes and I look at him and feel nothing? No pull…. nothing?” Her voice cracks in the last part and her fear brings me right back to Ryan.
Without thinking I utter. “I know that fear. That uncertainty that he wouldn’t be your mate. That he’d be someone else’s,” my tone had dropped, now swimming with pain. She picks up on it and rises on her elbows to look at me with furrowed brows before something in her mind clicks and her lips part in an ‘o’.
“You know what, forget I said anything,” her eyes shift from sadness to happiness so quickly I almost got whiplash. She gets off the bed and bounces while clapping her hands together. “Let’s go enjoy ourselves tonight.” She tugs me up with her and pulls me to the door.
