Evie’s pov

A few of the girls gasp while the others stared at Lisa as though she was trouble. Her words would have hurt a few days ago when I was broken but no more.

I wasn’t going to bend anymore and make stupid words hurt me.

Quincy straightens instantly, her bubbly personality snapping. “Lisa!” She snaps. “You promised to be on your best behavior! If not, I will call Kwan.”

Kwan was Lisa’s older brother. Quincy informed me that the second Lisa turned fourteen she’s been obsessed with Gavin. Quincy also mentioned that Lisa wasn’t bad before but she got mean when females were anywhere near

Gavin.

Her obsession had twisted into something very hideous over the years, according to Quincy. What might have been a childish crush had turned into something dangerously territorial.

Lisa rolls her pretty eyes but there’s hesitation swirling in the depths of them now. “You’re so dramatic Quincy,” she mutters under her breath as she walks more into the room. “I was just only joking.”

“It didn’t sound like a joke,” one of the girls on the floor mumbles. Emeka was her name, I remember her from training.

Lisa shoots her an irritated glare that made the poor girl cower. However I didn’t bat an eye and stared at Lisa calmly. She wanted a reaction from me and she wouldn’t get it.

Quincy crosses her arms. “I’ll call Gavin too. I’m sure he’d love to know you’re bullying Evie again in my room, especially after his last warning.”

A few of the girls giggle at that and that seems to irk Lisa even more. Her jaw tightens, muscle tensing. “Fine,” she sneers low, lifting her hands in mock surrender. “I’ll behave.”

“Good,” Quincy snaps. “Or you’re out of the sleepover.”

Lisa’s eyes widen. “You’d really kick me out because of her!” She points at me in disgust but I don’t react. I just continue to stare at her calmly. “You’d just met her a few days ago!”

Quincy tilts her head. “Try me,” she challenges her and Lisa huffs, shakes her head and lifts her hands up in mock

surrender.

“Got it birthday girl,” she said dryly and went to dim the lights. The room softens into a warm pretty glow as the main lights flick off, leaving only the fairy lights and a cherry blossom candle glowing on the dresser.

The atmosphere shifts instantly into one I’d almost say was peaceful. Quincy tugs me to the top of the bed and Lisa glares at me as she drops onto a chair across from the bed. She crosses her legs and shoots me daggers of hatred. I brush her off with a smile that clearly bothers her as the scowl on her face deepens.

“Are we watching scary movies until midnight?” One of the girls asks as she digs into the bowl of popcorn that has been passed around a couple of times.

“Ooh, we should play some games too!” one suggested excitedly.

“Hell no,” another groans as if the thought of playing games disgusted her. She fixes her glasses on the bridge of

her nose.”Let’s tell stories.”

“Oh yes, Stacy is right! We should definitely tell some stories, “Emeka nods, agreeing with Stacy. “Spookie stories. I’ll get the flashlight in my room,” she utters while standing up and jumps over a girl who was face down on the rug. I wasn’t sure if she was sleeping but her body hadn’t moved for a couple of minutes now.

Quincy claps her hands together, instantly back to her bubbly self. ” Yes! Spookie stories before midnight sounds perfect.”

“I think that’s a good idea,” Lisa adds to the conversation, uncrossing her legs as she looks at me boldly. “And I think Evie should be the first to tell us a story,” she tilts her head. “She can start by telling us how she was rejected by her mate for her sister.”

“Lisa!” Quincy snapped loud but I don’t get to hear the rest as nausea suddenly takes a hold of me. I throw a hand over my mouth and stand up quickly as I gag.

Everyone snaps their attention to me but I can’t even look at them as I run to the bathroom and slam the door shut. I barely make it to the toilet before I throw up into the bowl.

The scent chokes the air around me and causes me to throw up again. My small body shakes as everything I ate earlier comes right back up. I gasp, my eyes watering as my throat burns. My fingers grip the edge of the bowl for support.

Footsteps pound closer and I instantly pick up Quincy’s scent. “Evie!” Quincy bursts in just as I heave again into the bowl. She swiftly slams the door shut and rushes over to hold my hair away from my face. Her palms land on my back gently and softly rub the area soothingly.

I cough weakly, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand as the humiliation burns through me. I knew everyone could hear me gagging. They most likely could smell it too.” I’m fine, I’m fine,” I rasp and let out a cough. The second I do I feel vomit surge up into my throat again.

I’m clearly not fine.

Another wave shakes me and I clutch the bowl harder as if it would help me and stop the vomit altogether.

Quincy rubs my back. ” You clearly are not fine Evie. What did you eat? You must’ve eaten something bad.”

I only ate apples and a few scones. Though it wasn’t a heavy meal, I don’t think it was the cause of my sudden nausea. “It’s just training,” I mutter between breaths as I try to steady myself. “I’ve been pushing my body too hard. I probably just overdid it.”

That has to be it.

I’ve been running until my legs gave out and sparring until my ribs bruised. Hell, I even skip meals sometimes because I get too exhausted to eat.

This must be the cause of this. Nothing else.

Right?

Serena is quiet. Her being quiet was weird.

Quincy inhales slowly and suddenly stops as her hand freezes in my hair. “Evie…” she says softly, her voice shaking with confusion.

I flush the toilet and sit on the cold floor, breathing so hard it was kind of concerning. “Please don’t be concerned about this. It’s nothing,” I said but I didn’t even know if I trusted those words myself.

Her eyes narrow slightly when I glance at her. Then she does something that puzzles me. She leans closer and

inhales again

My heart stutters when I see her eyes shift with concern and confusion. “What?”I whisper. Then her expression shifts again but this time it was something that looks close to realization.
