Ryan’s pov
The office fell into silence the second I snapped. My chest rose and fell slowly as I tried to rein Apex back under control. He was restless and agitated. My claws were already pushing into my palms.
The pack was weakening, many of our people were dead, father was dying and mother was broken. The beta, Kimberly’s father, Dustin Gold was injured. Our pack was in shambles.
A sharp knock suddenly sounds at the door, pulling my attention away from an angry Kimberly.
I turned, irritation already rising. “What?” I snapped.
The door opened just enough for Martin to step in. His posture was rigid as if he was scared I’d rip his head off his shoulders.
“Alpha,” he said carefully, eyes shifted from me to Kimberly. He could sense the tension. “Your father is awake.”
My body went still. “He’s asking for you alpha.” He utters.
I inhaled a sharp breath. My father hadn’t asked for anyone since the vampires had nearly finished him off in that field last night. Not since the last time he coughed up blood and drifted in and out of consciousness.
Apex stirred. ‘Go.’
I brushed past Martin without another word to Kimberly. The walk to the infirmary felt longer than usual.
The smell of rubbing alcohol hit me the second I stepped inside the building. But the stench that was even stronger was the smell of blood. Blood that belonged to the injured pack members.
My wolf stirs, hating that our pack members were injured and we were outnumbered and couldn’t save enough.
‘We tried our best.’ Apex said firmly.
‘We could’ve tried harder.’ I said in pity.
‘There was one of you and many of them. It was impossible for us to save everyone.’ He pointed out and I know he was right but it didn’t ease my guilt.
But for now, I swallowed it like a hard pill as I continue my path to my father. The closer I got to the room, the stronger the scent of his blood curled into my nose. But that wasn’t the only scent that clung to him…..the scent of death swirls close. It’s not as strong but it is there. Warning that he wouldn’t live for long.
I stopped outside his door for a moment and for the first time since I was a boy….I hesitated.
He had always been strong, one of the strongest alphas. But now… he was practically nothing.
I pushed the door open and my eyes fall on his figure in the bed. There were no signs of mother, only his small form in the large space.
That was the first thing I noticed, how small he looks now that he was dying so quickly. His wolf had given up on him, unable to heal him. Even our resources couldn’t help. There was nothing more that could be done. It was just now a waiting game.
I really stare at him in that bed. His skin was pale, under his eyes sunken and dark. Tubes ran into his arms and the machine beeps steadily beside him.

His eyes shifted to me the moment I stepped into the room and shut the door behind me. “Ryan,” his voice was weak but he wanted it to sound firmer.
I stepped closer. “You shouldn’t be talking.”
He ignored those words and continued anyway. “What happened at the council meeting?”
Straight to it, I guess. I did tell him I’d be heading there the moment they called on me.
What I hadn’t told him yet is that our pack has gotten so weak that the council had one of our neighboring packs to help us. That neighboring pack being Midnight Ridge.
I clenched my jaw slightly as I recalled how that bastard made me feel incompetent in that blasted meeting. “They demanded assistance,” I told him the truth. “They want us to accept outside help.”
His eyes narrowed slightly in suspicion. “From who?”
My hands fist at my sides. “From another pack.”
A pause in the air before he asked. “Which pack Ryan?”
“Midnight Ridge,” I said blankly as my jaw tensed.
I watch father’s fingers twitch weakly against the blanket, his eyes searched mine as if he was inspecting me. They’re sending their Head Warrior,” I continue.” To train ours seeing as many of our people are dead, including our head warrior.”
His jaw tightened and shame quickly paints across his face. Shame. Not grief. Not relief. Just shame.
“They think we are now weak,” he rasped. It wasn’t a question. It was a statement, one that was right. I said nothing.
His breathing grows heavier. “They think we can’t handle our warriors,” he whispered. “They must think we can’t even train them back to full capacity ourselves,” His eyes hardened. “And now they send outsiders to fix what my son could not protect.”
The words hit harder than any blow and Apex growled low. I forced him down. “This wasn’t my failure alone,” I said tightly. “The vampire numbers were larger than expected. You got to witness and feel it firsthand.”
“As the alpha now you should’ve known how to fight them off without getting half your pack wiped out,” he rasped.
Silence filled the room again. Then his eyes shift as he studies me. “You have no heir.” The words came out of his mouth bluntly. i
I stiffened. “That shouldn’t be your concern right now or mine.”
“It is my only concern!” he snapped weakly and then let out a harsh cough. Crimson splatter on his lips. He ignores it.
“The council, they are like hawks, they watch everything,” he continue. “They see weakness. They smell instability. You’re lucky they have not ordered an alpha to take your position from you.”
His eyes locked onto mine. “You have no child. No heir. No guarantee that our bloodline will continue. It would be so easy to take the title from your hands.”
My jaw clenched as the words settle like poison in my being. “You are vulnerable right now Ryan,” he said. “An alpha without an heir is practically an invitation.”

Apex snarls in my head raging at the thought of someone trying to take my pack from me. A pack I had sworn to protect, yet even though I hadn’t done it properly, I promise I’d be better.
My father spoke again. “You must secure the bloodline. Secure the future of your bloodline.”
I already knew what he meant. “I am not ready to have a heir,” I said flatly.
His eyes darkened. “Then you must be ready Ryan! You’ve not even fully marked Kimberly yet and it’s been three years! She’s your wife, your Luna and you’ve not bedded her!”
