Evie’s pov
I slip on my black combat boots and straighten. I let out a breath as my eyes catch my reflection in the mirror.
Staring back at me is a woman dressed in skin tight black jeans, light grey thin shirt and a black leather jacket. She looks opposite of the woman who fled the Silver blood pack years ago.
That girl had red-rimmed eyes and hands that shook with fear. This woman standing now shoulders are steady and her chin is lifted. Gone is the fear in her eyes, gone is the way she once felt.
I step closer to the mirror, studying myself the way I would study an opponent before a fight. My hair is a lot longer now, darker too and is pulled back into a tight ponytail that exposes my face fully. No soft curls framing my cheeks. I didn’t want to appear gentle.
My fingers trail lightly over the faint scar near my neck, the one I got during a rogue ambush two years ago. I remember the sting of it, the way my warm blood had trickled down to the dirt and joined the earth.
I hadn’t fallen then and I sure as hell won’t fall now.
I turn away from the mirror. My duffel bag rests at the edge of the bed, already packed with everything I’ll need for the next few weeks. Training manuals, spare weapons, extra clothes and a tiny red flower that was now dried Atlas picked for me a few weeks ago.
I sling the strap over my shoulder and with a light huff I head for the door. Quincy is already waiting for me there, her eyes sad. “I’ll see you soon Evie,” she said as she pulls me into another hug.
“Take care of him for me Quincy,” I breathed, my heart thudding.
She nods. “With my life.”
When we part I walk out of the house and turn to her one last time as she waves me goodbye. I didn’t want to go see Atlas, scared that I would never leave if I did.
So I carry him with me the only way I’ve always done. Inside my chest, cuddled between every pulse of my heart.
Gavin and the others are already waiting for me outside with him leaning casually against the huge black G wagon. His chin is lifted to the sky seeming to be lost in thought.
As my boots crunch on the gravel his eyes cast down to me. He pushes off the wagon. “You’re late.”
I look down at the watch wrapped around the bone of my wrist and snort. “Seconds. Only seconds alpha Gavin.”
His lips twitch. “Still tardy.”
I roll my eyes and make my way to the passenger side only to stop in my tracks when I see that Lisa is already seated there.
Lisa glances at me, opens the door and steps outside. “Sorry, I just figured you’d not want them to see you first. I can go to the back if you want?”
Her voice sounds sincere but something tells me she did also want to ride shotgun with Gavin. It’s not like her crush on him had disappeared. Sure it calmed down a lot and she was not as crazy but anyone with a good eye can see Lisa was still madly in love with Gavin.
I contemplated her words because they did make sense. I wouldn’t want them to see me first at all.

I exhale slowly and shake my head. “No. It’s fine, I’ll sit in the back.”

She doesn’t look relieved but gives me a curt nod before sliding back into the passenger seat. Gavin walks around the hood and stands before me. I raise a brow in question but he just pushes his hand into his pocket and pulls out something.
The small, familiar wrapper glints in the light when he holds it out to me, Chocolate.
My lips twitch. “You’re unbelievable.”
“And you’re very predictable,” he counters back and pushes it into my hand.
I stare at it for a second. Gavin would always give me one of those to help calm my nerves. For some reason he knew they would work. And they did. Every single time.
I unwrap it slowly, the crinkle loud in the quiet air. The second I bite into it, I let the taste of chocolate burst on my tongue followed by caramel. I closed my eyes for a mere second to take the taste in. My shoulders loosen just slightly.
Gavin watches me carefully, his sharp gaze missing nothing.
“Better now?” he asks.
I chew and nod once.” Way better.”
He gives a nod and opens the back door. “Get in. We need to reach there before noon.”
I climb inside and settle into the leather seat beside one of the warriors and the others follow after me and fill up the remaining seats.
A few moments later, the engine hum deepens and we begin to move.
I lean my head back against the seat and stare out the tinted window as Midnight Ridge slowly disappears behind us. The familiar trees and faces of our people. The training grounds. The pack house and my house where Atlas sleeps safely in his small blue room.
He’s safe and that’s all that matters.
The drive is quiet with everyone tense. Even Lisa who is usually chatty with the others remain calm.
The further we are from Midnight Ridge and closer to Silver Blood makes Serena stir restlessly in my mind.
‘We’re going to see him today.’ She breathed.
I tense up. ‘He’s nobody and no one to us.’
She settles back at the back of my mind but was still a bit restless.
