Evie’s pov
He stands at the front of the pack house, a lot broader than I remember him to be. His dark hair is shorter on the sides now, the top left just long enough to fall slightly over his forehead. His jaw is sharper, harder. He looks less like a boy and more like an Alpha.
More dangerous.
But his eyes….those eyes are the same.
They sweep over the vehicle as it rolls to a stop, eyes swimming with a bit of suspicion. He didn’t trust us and we didn’t trust him. The engine cuts off and those eyes flick to Gavin as he steps out of the driver’s side.
The tension in the air was suffocating.
Gavin closes his door with a quiet click, lifts his chin and meets Ryan’s gaze head-on. There’s no submission in his posture. No hesitation. Only the confidence of an Alpha who fears no one.
Lisa steps out of the passenger seat next and the others follow suit. But I remain where I am. I am the last one, hidden behind tinted glass of the vehicle. Serena stirs as we peer at Ryan.
Something about him had changed.
‘he seems different,’ Serena utters and I agree.
He looks like a stranger and yet my body remembers him, remembers the way he once looked at me like I
mattered.
Ryan’s gaze flickers briefly to Lisa then back to Gavin. His lips curl at the ends as if he were fighting off a smirk.” Alpha Gavin, we’ve been expecting you and your warriors.”
Gavin nod stiffly in acknowledgement. ” Alpha Ryan.”
Kimberly, my sister who was curled by his side gives Gavin a seductive smile. I nearly rolled my eyes. Here she was mated and married yet she was still the same old Kimberly. A whore.
“I didn’t expect you to bring so many warriors,” Ryan suddenly utter, his voice lace with mockery and sarcasm.
Gavin says nothing, just hardens his eyes. Ryan’s eyes drift over the warriors stepping out of the back as they form a protective line behind Gavin. And then Ryan’s gaze lands on Lisa again, his eyebrow arch in mocking question as his lips twist with sarcasm.
“Ah and this might be the one the council talked about,” he says dryly and loud enough for everyone to hear. “The famous head warrior?”
Lisa stiffens beside Gavin. It was clear Ryan was deliberately insulting Lisa because, in his mind, she didn’t look strong enough.
He was mocking us.
My hands fist at my sides. He had definitely changed. The old Ryan would never mock a woman. Ever.
It was time I made my presence known and stop hiding behind the shadows.
‘We got this Evie,’ Serena utters. If there was one person who believed in me the most, it would be my wolf Serena. Without her, I wouldn’t be the Evie I am today.

“We are no longer weak and the mate he wanted to have murdered ”
I nod, agreeing with her before I straighten my back, swallow in calming air and then, I move My fingers grip the edge of the door as I put one foot out at first. Then the other. The faint crunch of my boots on the gravel made my fellow pack members start to move aside.
They could sense the power within me. Especially when I utter the word. “No.”
The silence that follows after my words are released is deafening. I straighten my spine, keep my chin up and start to walk towards him.
He hadn’t noticed me yet, but he heard my voice. His eyes were searching for me but Gavin blocks his path. And then Gavin shifts, just slightly but enough to give me room to grace them with my presence.
Ryan’s mother is the first to stiffen when her eyes land on me and my sister, Kimberly, draws in a shocked gasp, the color draining from her face. And then Ryan….
‘Keep yourself grounded Evie.’ Serena warns as we draw near. So close. So damn close.
The moment our eyes locked something shifted in his gaze, his shoulder stiffens and his nostrils flare as he breathes in deep.
He was taking in my scent. I wonder if I could still have an effect on him now that he’s marked another? I doubt it.
“Me,” I utter with confidence as I step just beside Gavin and just before Ryan Storme. My ex mate.
Kimberly’s hand tightens around Ryan’s arm and from the corner of my eyes I see the former Luna, Ryan’s mother Stephie, shift on her feet.
I feel the corner of my lips twitch as I fight the urge to smirk in their faces.
Look at them now. Pitiful and now needing my help.
