Stephie’s pov

Kimberly’s eyes flash with fury.”t already knew that!” she snaps.

“But he doesn’t,” I utter.

“And he won’t,” she says firmly, her arms crossing over her chest. She looks so pissed.

The confidence of her words makes me a bit uneasy. Because things are already slipping out of our control. It was only a matter of time until Ryan finds out.

“You don’t understand Kimberly,” I tell her, lowering my voice so Ryker doesn’t wake up. The last thing I want is for him to wake up and hear that the girl he tried to get rid of…. is here and killing her would be difficult. “There are things we didn’t tell you…… The spell was never meant to last forever.”

Kimberly eyes widen as she gasps. “What?!” Then her jaw tightens as her hands fists at her sides. “You told me it would hold.”

“It was supposed to,” I say. “But the witch warned us that if they met again…the bond might start breaking through. She warned that the memories would return to Ryan once he set his eyes on Evie.”

Kimberly’s breathing grows heavier, her fingers now gripping her silky strands in frustration. “So you’re saying, her voice shakes. “His memories are slowly coming back to him?”

I nod stiffly. “Yes.”

Kimberly starts pacing the flooring again. “We can’t let that happen Stephie! We must stop it from happening!”

looked away once more. “I don’t think there’s anything we can do to stop it now Kimberly. He’s regaining them faster than we thought he would.”

“Of course there is!” Kimberly snaps, she stops pacing and turn to me. “We kill her.”

Evie’s pov

“You let your emotions show out there,” Gavin points out when the silver blood warriors left. They had assigned everyone new clean rooms and the beds didn’t look like they would fall under our weight. Gavin was now in mine to make sure they had prepared a clean one for me too.

I turn to face him, keeping my expression neutral. “What do you mean?”

Gavin studies me gently before questioning. “Are you sure you will be able to handle this Evie? It’s clear that they resent you –

“I don’t care about their resentment,” I shrug, waving a hand nonchalantly. “I only came here to do what I was asked and as soon as I am done, I will leave.”

Gavin stays quiet for a bit, his eyes searching my face before he lets out a sigh. “Kwan will come this evening. I will be here for only a few days and will go back to Midnight Ridge. I can’t leave my pack without much protection. I can’t stay for long.”

I nod agreeing with him. I know he was worried about leaving me here with them. But I can take care of myself and don’t need a babysitter. Gavin knows that but I know he would be worried either way.

“I thought you d be more composed.” Gavin suddenly utters. “You’re letting them get under your skin ”

My jaw clenches and I look away, walking to the window that overlooks the forest. “Please. I was very composed. ”

I know I couldn’t fool him. Gavin knew me like the back of his hand. We had grown so close during those few years

“You stared at him like you wanted to punch him.” Gavin points out with a bit of amusement in his tone.

Despite wanting to act nonchalant, a small snort escapes me. “That’s because I did.”

“Do you still hate him?” Gavin suddenly questions and that makes me whirl around to face him in surprise.

The question hangs between us heavily for a few moments before I reply. “I don’t,” I looked away in shame because after everything he did to me, today, standing before him and looking directly in his eyes, I couldn’t feel that emotion of hatred.

I don’t know what I felt. But it hadn’t been hate.

“You don’t have to feel embarrassed if you don’t Evie,” Gavin said in a calm tone. “You two were close once and ended up being fated mates-

“Don’t say it,” I interrupted quickly. “Don’t say it out loud.”

I don’t want to be reminded of that night everything crashed between Ryan and me. I don’t want to be reminded of the bond we shared before he tossed it for power.

Gavin goes quief and I am grateful that he doesn’t question me further. Instead, he clears his throat. “Well,” he mutters lowly. “I should probably check on the others before Kwan arrives.

I nod and turn around to stare out the window once more. Once he was gone and I was in the room alone, I let out a breath
