Misha straightened up.

“Bertrum, with respect. Dr. Thawthorne is the best healer in this country at her level of specialization. I would not have brought her if I had any doubt. If she does not treat Elan, I do not have another name for you.”

Misha’s words made my heart tighten. He was one of the very few people who believed in me and never failed to let me know and say it to everyone else.

However, even his passionate words did not seem to sway Bertrum. The man had the same frown on his face.

“That is not the point, Misha.”

“Then what is the point?” Misha inquired.

“The point is that woman is a Thawthorne.” Bertrum’s cane tapped the floor. “She is the wife of Kieran Thawthorne. She lives in Crowley Thawthorne’s pack. Whatever she sees in this house, whatever she learns13:15 about my grandson’s condition will be in Crowley’s ear

before the week is out. And if you cannot understand the danger of that-”

“I am divorcing him.” I interrupted him.

Both men looked at me, I held Bertrum’s eyes.

“I am in the middle of a divorce. The marriage is ending. Whatever I learn in this house stays in this house. You have my word.”

Bertrum’s mouth pulled at the corner, the cruelty behind his eyes showed this was not a smile.

“You are pregnant.” He pointed out.

I nodded. “I am.”

He scoffed loudly. “And you expect me to believe that the wife of a man whose child she is carrying is in the middle of a divorce.”

“You do not have to believe me. I am telling you what is true.”

A door opened somewhere in the hallway behind us.

The quiet mechanical hum of a wheelchair came down the corridor.

I turned and saw a man rolling into the sitting room.

He was so pale his skin was almost translucent under the chandelier. His hair was dark, his cheekbones sharp, his frame thin under the layers of his clothes. But his eyes were green and very awake. They moved from Misha to me and stopped on me with a steady focus.

“Grandfather.” He said and immediately Bertrum turned to face him

“Elan, you should be resting-”

“It does not matter to me whether she is Kieran Thawthorne’s wife or not. If she can do the job, she does the job. If she cannot, I will ask Misha for someone else. That is the only question that matters today.”

So this was Elan.

Bertrum’s jaw tightened but Elan turned his head toward

“You are Dr. Thawthorne?”

I nodded. “Serena. Please.”

“Serena.” He inclined his head. “Forgive my grandfather. He is protective of good reason.”

“I understand, but I am pursuing a divorce.”

Elan’s eyes shifted to Bertrum. There was something faintly amused in them. “You hear that, Grandfather? She is getting a divorce. The woman is on our side.”

Bertrum however, rolled his eyes. “She is pregnant, Elan.”

“Many divorced women are pregnant. Pregnancy is not a marriage.” Elan turned back to me.

“Will you examine me, Serena? I want a real opinion. The last three healers told me three different things and none of them agreed. I would like to know if my wolf is dead, alive, or somewhere in between.”

“Of course.”

I walked towards him and knelt beside the wheelchair. He gave me his wrist. I placed two fingers against his pulse, closed my eyes and listened to his blood. 4/12

It took me a moment to find it. The wolf was not where a healthy wolf lived. He was deeper, smaller, curled into a corner of Elan’s body the way a wounded animal pressed itself into a den and refused to come out. But he was alive. The presence of him was thin. But he was alive, and that meant there was something to work with.

I opened my eyes.

“Your wolf is alive.”

Elan’s chest rose. Just slightly.

“Are you sure?”

“I am sure. He is weak. He has gone deep, but he is there. There is work to be done, Elan. I cannot promise you a recovery in a week. But this is treatable.”

He closed his eyes for a moment before he slowly nodded his head. “Thank you.”

We made arrangements before I left. Twice a week, after my last patient at the hospital, I would come to the pack house. The treatment would be a combination of physical therapy, medication, and pack-healer techniques. Elan3:16

would do what he was told. Bertrum would, grudgingly,

allow it.

Misha walked me out.

The car was quiet for the first ten minutes of the drive back.

Then I asked.

“Misha. What is the history between Lunaridge and

Crimson?”

Misha kept his eyes on the road.

“More complicated than I want to be involved in.” He stated simply hinting that he may or may not know anything.

“You are involved, Misha. You brought me here.” I pointed out.

“I brought you here as a healer. Nothing more.”

“There is something between those two families that goes deeper than anybody knows.” I said.

“Serena.” His voice was careful. “I do not acquaint myself with the politics of packs. I treat patients. I keep my hospital running. I stay in my lane. I would advise you to do the same. Whatever you have to do with the Cartridges, do it as a healer. Do not get pulled into anything else.”

I did not answer.

I knew, even as he said it, that I was already pulled in. I had to use anybody that was willing to be able to get my freedom from Kieran. I couldn’t just let go of a possibility that I would be free.

I got home at eight.

Kieran was already there. He was in the living room, his sleeves rolled up, his tie hanging loose, a glass of water in his hand. He looked up when I walked in.

“Where have you been?”

I walked past him, talking to him was not a luxury I could afford right now. So I simply went upstairs, went into the bathroom and locked the door.

I stood under the hot water for a long time letting the

warmth help with my aching joints.

When I came out of the bathroom in pajamas, he was sitting on the edge of the bed.

“Serena.”

I did not look at him.

I walked to the bed. I pulled back the covers. I got in. I rolled away from him. I closed my eyes.

“Where were you?”

“Outside work.” I said simply.

“What kind of outside work?”

“The kind I am not allowed to discuss.” I kept my eyes closed like I was sleeping hoping he would turn away and let me be.

“Serena, we need to talk about last night.” His voice was not soft or calm but it was not harsh of angry. It was almost normal.

“Sorry.”

“Sorry?”

“Yes.” I affirmed.

“Serena-”

“I drugged you. I sent Sophie up trying to set you up. I am sorry. There. We have talked about it.” I continued to close my eyes.

“That is not-”

“What more do you want from me, Kieran?” I did not turn around. “What more is there to say? Yes, I did it. Yes, it was me. I have apologized. We can move on or we can stay here all night and you can keep asking me questions whose answers you already have. Your choice.”

There was a long silence.

“Have you eaten?”

“Yes.”

“Are you tired?”
